We'd never holidayed in Malta before, and we had a mid-March five-day window for which cheapish Easyjet flights were available. Tripadvisor led us to the Relax Inn. While it was on some booking sites, we booked direct and paid on arrival - very trusting. The clientele seems to be mainly British, (and mainly older). For the price, it was excellent. Most of the nice things have already been said by others, so I'll just note that there is free wifi accessible from every room - how much better than many other hotels, which either don't offer wifi, or charge the earth for it.

The food was good value, for the price. (We were half board). We didn't pay the extra for full English breakfast, but there was a wide choice of cereals, yoghurt, bread (and toast), ham and cheese for the continental breakfasts. Evening meals were a choice of starters brought to you at lightning speed (pasta or soup), then counter service of either a meat or a fish dish. I had Grouper one day! Then a choice of desserts.

We would happily go back if we return to Malta. The only minor negative was the (lack of) choice of TV channels. There were umpteen local and Italian TV channels, but only Sky News or CNN in English.

As stated in another review, there is a bus service direct from the airport to Bugibba. It's the 'X3', but don't expect X to mean 'express'. While it may be limited-stop, its route zig-zags via Valetta outskirts and Rabat, taking about 1hr 20 mins. The bus station in Bugibba is about 10 minutes walk from the hotel, with other stops being nearer. (Most buses seem to take a clockwise route around the Bugibba / Qawra peninsula. Services to Valetta (via two routes) and frequent, taking about an hour.

Stayed five days here in Feb 2012, Towels changed every day, rooms a good size, was a bed and continental breakfast deal, Breakfast very good value. Reception staff very helpful, only downside is they allow smoking in the rooms and the smell of stale cigarettes lingers. Also saw staff smoking in baggage room next to the laundry.

Room Tip: Rear rooms have a good view of sea

The beautiful Sharon and her friendly team really do set the theme for the The Relax.
The few negative reviews suggests to me people with severe social skills problems.
At the extremely competitive rates the rooms, food and general location make this hotel ideal and I will certainly return with absolutely no misgivings.
AS mentioned often, Malta bus services are very close as are many alternative bars and restaurants not forgetting mini mart convenience stores.
I used the X3 Airport to Bugibba bus this trip instead of transfers but RESORTHOPPA offer minibus transfers for about £5.

If you want Roast Beef and yorkshire or fish &chips every meal, Corrie/eastenders on the box with BINGO every night I suggest Southend or Blackpool.

I love the Relax and indeed all MALTA

Room Tip: No preferences for me ALL equally good

My mother and I spent 4 nights at the Relax Inn in Jan 2012 and we had a wonderful time. We paid approx £12.50 each per night for dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel details clearly stated that there was no parking, but this was not necessary as Malta is incredibly well served by buses.

On landing at Malta airport, pop into the tourist info and ask for a list of the bus routes. This is invaluable. A bus to Bugibba (Boo gee bah) costs 2.20 euro from the airport and in Jan 2012 it was an X3. It takes about 1hr 20 mins to get to Bugibba. Once in Bugibba, stay on the bus until you see the sea. McD's will be on your left, with the sea beyond. The bus will drive along the seafront. Once you pass the small piaza on your right with an HSBC on the corner, ping the bell to stop the bus. The bus will stop at the end of Halel St and the hotel is just up the road on the right. The hotel is right in the centre of Bugibba.

A taxi costs 25 euro - payable to a cash desk in the airport - and takes about 20-30 mins. Our taxi driver tried to fob us off with getting off at the wrong hotel, but we stuck it out so he had to take us on further to the correct hotel.

The room was larger than expected, with a bath, powerful shower, a kettle and a hairdryer. Everything was old, but spotlessly clean - including the balcony. The beds were comfy too.

The front of the hotel overlooks Halel St and there is no particular view from the balcony. (Rooms 5-8 on each floor are at the front) There is a little traffic noise and some noise from the bars at night, but this was very muted (and I am really sensitive to noise). However, in the summer this could be a very different story. Take ear plugs if you are at all worried.

Rooms 501 - 504 are the only rooms that appear to have sea views. Rooms 1-4 on each floor would seem to be quieter as they do not overlook the road.

The staff were delightful, especially Gary on reception. He is Welsh, so you will have no probs communicating. There was a very well stocked book exchange in reception.

When we went, the hotel was full of older, British singles and couples, all of whom were very friendly. You could avoid them if you liked, but alternatively, if you are single and would like a little bit of company, most of the guests would be happy to spend time with you. There was even a group (from various hotels) that got together every day to go walking around Malta.

As for the food - well what does anyone expect for the price? As a veggie, I expected nothing, but I was really surprised. Breakfast had 3 types of tinned fruit, natural yogurt, 3 types of cereal, bread, toast, rolls, cheese, meats and cake. If you wanted anything cooked, you could pay a little extra for it. Dinner was 3 courses, generally with soup or pasta to start, a huge veggie dish using Quorn for me as a main (for the meat eaters there was pork one day, cod another etc), a help yourself salad buffet and cheesecake and ice cream for desert. We ate extremely well.

All in all, my mother (aged 68) and I (aged 41) loved this hotel as we felt that we had received amazing value for money.
