“My second trip to Izola”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

It is my second stay in the Marina Hotel in Izola. I enjoyed it the first time in 2009 and also the second time in September 2011. Very clean hotel rooms, and the food was excellent. If I should by chance visit Izola I will stay at this hotel.

This hotel and location is a little 'gem'. It has a bit of everything, beauty, bustle, peace, views etc. The staff are friendly and welcoming. We travelled on our large touring motorcycle and had a big journey getting there. We had a warm welcome from the receptionist, who had been looking out for us arriving. Our room was lovely, clean, big and spacious (maybe a little tired round the edges!) but WOW what a view we had from our huge balcony - picture perfect view of the harbour and wide expanse of sea.

Breakfast is plentiful with a wide range of food, drinks available. We decided to go half board, on reflection we would not do so again, the food was ok, good service, but the choice was restricted, too large portions, and we had to eat inside, outside was for a la carte dinner, we didn't know this beforehand and seemed a good idea at the time of booking, we had only 3 nights here so was
manageable. However, we ate lunch (outside) and was very very good!

The hotel offers a range of amenities, I chose to try out a couple of massages. These were brill and I recommend them if you're looking for a treat and a bit of indulgence.

It's hard to find a critisim here, the only 2 small problems are: the parking outside the hotel is a nightmare, the car park is very small and right on the harbour front, we wanted our motorcycle close to us, so was a little difficult. There is however a car park a short distance away if you don't mind leaving your vehicle. The A/C is controlled by reception staff, I would have preferred to be able to control the temperature ourselves, we had to ask to have it cooler, which was no problem to them, just an inconvenience for us.

The hotel is in a pretty little town, so there are things to do and see within walking distance, plenty of cafes, shops and restaurants - the train and ship museum is worth a visit too!

If you want a room with a view, then ask for the superior double with balcony ( ours was on the top floor 3rd and the view took our breath away.

Room Tip: Room 301 on the 3rd floor - superior double with balcony.

A decent hotel which was rendered extra special by its superb location, top-notch staff and excellent restaurant. A great place to stay in Izola which is a wonderful, relaxed, picturesque small town. I would also add that the restaurant is good value for money.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. We had let them know beforehand that we were celebrating our first wedding anniversary and had asked them if they could possibly give us a room with a beautiful view to enjoy. When we arrived, we were given room 403, which had a stunning view of the marina and town beyond. If this room is available, ask for it- I don't think you'd find a much better room in the hotel. They even left us some sparkling wine in an ice cooler as a complimentary gift. It was a really nice touch and we really appreciated it.

The room in the hotel was really comfortable and spotlessly clean. It had good air conditioning and I slept well. There was a great variety at breakfast, with some hot dishes, a variety of cheese and meat, cereal, fruit, yogurt, bread and croissants.

There are some parking spaces in front of the hotel and we were lucky enough to get one of these, which cost us 5 euros a night. If there are none available when you arrive, there are lots of other alternatives nearby which vary in price. Assuming we wouldn't get a free space at the hotel, we had originally parked at a large car park just up the marina, which was a 5 minute walk away. To park there for the night, it would have cost 16 euros, but the receptionist told us there were other car parks nearby that are cheaper. So, even if you can't park directly in front of the hotel, there seem to be quite a few alternatives and your car doesn't need to be too far away. Even though the parking situation in Izola isn't ideal, it was much better than Piran, which is virtually impossible to drive around. We drove to Piran the next morning to visit, which was a short drive, and parked in a multi-storey car park recommended in our travel guide, which wasn't particularly cheap! There is a free shuttle bus into Piran, but if you had a lot of luggage, or you wanted to come and go a few times, it wouldn't be ideal.

It all comes down to personal preference, but my husband and I were pleased that we decided to stay in Izola rather than Piran. It is a small, friendly and unpretentious fishing town which, when we visited, was really buzzing. We enjoyed some amazing, fresh seafood right on the marina and it was not nearly as crowded as Piran. Piran is a short drive away, so we were able to visit easily the next morning and combine the two towns.

If you visit Izola, Hotel Marina is a fantastic place to stay- clean, friendly, helpful and a wonderful central location with views of the harbour and a short walk away from some lovely restaurants.

Room Tip: Room 403 was beautiful. If you want the best views, try to aim for the third or fourth floor.

We really liked the hotel. Everything was well, air conditioning in the room worked well. Staff at the reception desk was friendly and polite. Breakfast was delicious and nutritious.

Hotel disadvantage - small parking lot near the hotel.

was great, staff really helpful also with different paying methods. Keep in mind there is no parking available at sight, maybe only for (un)loading your baggage and than you have to park 5 mins walk away. Coffee at breakfast was bad.

We liked Izola and liked the Marina Hotel. Maybe it was the great weather that helped. What we liked most about our room was we went for the Superior Room and the balcony was HUGE. Consider getting room 201 or 202. We had to get two room and room 205 is one of the rooms with the smaller balconies and the folks in that room spent most of their time on our balcony. So, if you need two rooms, splurge for 201 or 202 (maybe 301, 302) and then go the non-superior route for your second room. My other comment is that the breakfast was actually quite good, very international, covering American and European expectations. And the staff was very helpful as well. The only downside is the lack or parking, but it was a nice walk through the city to the inexpensive parking (again, maybe the weather is influencing my opinion here).

Room Tip: 201 or 202 -- great, big balconies; maybe the rooms right above as well (301 and 302?)
