“lovely lunch in delightful setting.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2014 via mobile

Stopped here for lunch whilst touring the area.Huge portions, extremely tasty, starters & mains, couldnt manage dessert, though our friends did.The bill was very reasonable. The setting is very impressive with the cliffs & river.Would certainly consider staying here in future.

This place is out-of-the-way but definitely worth the trip. The drive to the hotel through the national park is almost worth the price in of itself. The spectacular scenery that surrounds the hotel is truly unique. The hotel itself is situated on the side of the mountain next to a quaint train station that is tucked between two deep tunnels. We arrived late in the evening and ate in the hotel restaurant, which was quite good, and sat on the terrace overlooking the cliffs, lakes and dam. Our room was a full two-bedroom apartment, well appointed, with a huge terrace that overlooked the lake. We only stayed one night, which I regret. I would certainly stay here again, and leave time to hike one of the many spectacular trails that crisscross the area.

Fabulous location, but waking up to the sight of a group of vultures circling above the hotel, followed by a solitary Eagle was breathtaking. La Garganta is the only hotel close to the sleepy railway station. The staff are very friendly, the rooms are contemporary but the outsides walls are adorned with farming antiques which helps create a very atmospheric experience. I really enjoyed the menu - best described as a Spanish country kitchen, good portions of local produce, and well priced. If you enjoy hiking, mountain biking, or just want a quiet retreat for a night or two, this has to be the place. Easily reached by train from Malaga. El Chorro gorge is truly stunning and best glimpsed from the railway journey from El Chorro to Bobadilla. Locals brave walking along the railway track through the tunnels to access it........risky!!. One of those places that I would definitely return to, but probably in June when the evenings would be warmer.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel, overlook the gorge.

Stayed here for 24 hours as it seemed to be the best option for the area of El Chorro (and probably was). Situated high looking down the gorge the views are spectacular and the hotel which has recently had a great deal of money updating parts of it - mainly the bedrooms, pool and terrace.
Bedrooms are large, extremely well fitted out and feature unusual decor. Beautiful infinity pool with all the trimmings but shading could have been better.
The hotel advertises a gastronomic experience and this where we part company. Good ingredients were let down by very unimaginative cooking and presentation. We ate exclusively outside in a vine covered area of the terrace, simply furnished with basic tables and chairs. Never saw anyone in the separate dining room which we were not encouraged to occupy.
This one star hotel is expensive for what is offered and is clearly exploiting its geographical position. The staff were solicitous and helpful but the operation has some way to go.

This was quite a suprise. We didn't quite know what to expect and booked it because we wanted to see El Chorro. From the other side of the gorge it looks like a rather austere box of a building which doesn't exactly draw you towards it and there's a hydro electric plant below which doesn't add to its allure. But for all that there's something about this place that makes it really unusual. The most obvious attraction is the truly spectacular view of the gorge and surrounding cliffs, which constantly colour as the sun passes. The pool area and the cafe terrace look onto this. They've clarly spent quite a lot of money refurbishing the place. Everything was in good reapair and although it's basic rather than luxurious it does have a distinctive style. Nothing more so than our room which was smartly tiled and on split levels with red LED lights embedded in the steps. The food is simple but good quality local fare - I had leg of goat (Kid) which was delicious. I think they could afford to do a bit more with the food but even so we really loved the place and would certainly go back.

Room Tip: They all seemed the share the spectacular view - but make sure you double check that you're look...

While touring in the El Chorro region, we decided to have lunch at La Garganta. With stunning views over the embalse (reservoir) and the mountains from our table in the shade of the overhanging vines, we enjoyed a lovely Tapas lunch. The service was friendly and efficient and the meal was excellent.
After the meal we had a good nose round the property and liked what we saw. Would definitely consider staying here if we came back to the region. The location is idyllic.

we stayed in a two bedroom apartment. it has amazing views from the balcony. inside it is small dark and cramped. a very tiny kitchen, with no large mugs and we had to steel glasses from the bar so as to have something to drink out of. there is a large fridge, which is handy. the aircon works well and there are radiators, so presumably it is warm in winter.
to be honest though, it is not worth the £100 a night price tag. our bed was so uncomfortable I have been left with a bad back. they are basically camp beds with thin mattresses. the furniture is basic, and our bed side draw was covered with graffiti on the inside.one of the dinning chairs was broken. the sofa is very small and un-comfy. The place is clean enough, but the kitchen bin is so small, that if you are self catering, the rubbish piles up very quickly. they only come and clean if you specifically ask them to. we stayed 5 nights, the rooms were serviced twice.
there is no privacy as the walls to the bedrooms do not go all way up to the ceiling, which is to show off the high beamed ceiling.
The best aspect is the bathroom, which is modern and clean. plenty of towels provided. the odd thing is, is that when you arrive, they provide you with boxed tooth brushes, a boxed comb, a box of tissues, dinky bottles of shampoo, dinky bottles of nicely scented body lotion, but no soap ! even basic travel lodges provide soap!
there is even an incense holder !
the pillows are old fashioned bolsters, and very shallow and not at all comfortable
we did see photos of the junior suites and they looked much nicer.
the best part about the hotel is the pool, which has Jacuzzi effect at shallow end, amazing view, comfy sun loungers and pool bar service.
also the location, views are stunning and right next to small station.
down side is the hydro electric plant which makes faint humming sounds and the pylons. but the view out weighs though.
if the fancy rooms have better beds then i'd give those a go. but i could not stand more than a night in the bed we had.

Room Tip: dont get the apartments.
