I am glad to see that Al Lago is now listed in TripAdvisor - I tried to write a review last Ocober after we visited. We were visiting English friends who now live outside of and they suggested we meet here for a night on our way back from Cordoba. Beautiful setting overlooking the lake. The outdoor restaurant is a great place to kick back with a glass of wine or for dinner. As another reviewer mentioned, Stephan who is American is a good chef - we had a leisurely dinner outside. His wife Mona is very friendly and accomadating also. Mona and Stephan recently remodeled the hotel and the rooms are good sized, neat, clean and have great bathrooms stocked with upscale toiletries. Our room had a wonderful view of the lake.

Mona will set you up with maps of local hiking trails which unfortunately we didn't have time to do.

Make sure you walk up into town - one of those typical Spanish white washed villages. Above the town is an abandon castle with incredible views of the lake, town and surrounding areas. The ride over the mountain to Grazalema is fantastic. It was closed for paving when we tried it but saw enough before we had to turn around to realize just how pretty it was. Also visit the olive oil factory on the edge of town.

A truly great place to get away from the crowds down on the Med and experience real Spanish living.

What a find ! If you are seeking a perfect location (overlooking a lake), clean comfortable rooms with all you would expect to find in a modern hotel, a really quiet location to ensure a good night's sleep, excellent, friendly service (in fact, it's just being at home!), great food and good value for money, then you'll not be disappointed !

We found Mona and Stefan excellent husband & wife hosts (Stefan is the outstanding chef in the kitchen and Mona the obliging hotel/restaurant manager).

I could not recommend it more highly.

I loved Al Lago as soon as I arrived. Eva, the manager, was so friendly and helpful with information about the area. Then I saw the room, big, beautiful, so tastefully decorated and with a balcony overlooking the lake. The first night we ordered the chef's menu and the food was delicious. The second day of our stay my partner had a bike accident, broke her back and landed in the hospital. Eva, Mona and Stephen (the owners), as well as the women who worked there, did everything they could to help me and make my stay easier and more enjoyable. For those 10 days Al Lago was my home. From letting me borrow their son's cell phone, to cooking me meals when they were closed, they treated me like family. How lucky I was to be staying there when the accident occurred. Mona even got her mother in London to find us a first class flight back to San Francisco, although in the long run we were medi-vaced out. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you want to go to a beautiful pueblo blanco and stay in a small, picturesque place with wonderful food and great hospitality stay at Al Lago.

When we first planned a trip to the Andalucia, we were tossed between staying at Grazalema, Zahara de Sierra or Ronda. Due to good advice from a fellow forumer at fodor's, we decided on Al-Lago. To be honest, it was an excellent choice and I found it the prettiest town among all. Not too touristy....

My husband loved the Al Lago immediately. The room we had was so new and the bed and linens felt so clean and comfortable. The bathroom was fantastic..made of some kind of granite and of cos, very modern. Had nice aromatherapy soaps too. We later heard from Mona (the owner) that all the materials are indigenous to Spain. Lastly, we were not bored at night cos there was cable tv and tonnes of channels. Also wifi too.

We also had a room facing the lake and could even order desserts and hot chocolate to our balcony terrace. The cheesecake and hot chocolate was heavenly....

Most of our meals were at the Al Lago restaurant, which is owned by Stefan. (Husband and wife team). Food was mainly Spanish fare, and also impeccable. Not the cheapest around, but really high quality food. If u have a chance, also try the white grape sorbet with champagne. I loved it so much i ordered it more than once during our stay there.

Overall, we are so glad we chose this accomodation. It was a little bit of an unknown at first, but we took a risk since it was highly recommended by the forumer. The owners are really helpful and we felt quite at home. Also, the price of the room was in fact, value for money.

So if you have the chance, to give it a go!

My wife and I went to Al Lago for an anniversary treat, and what a treat it turned out to be!! We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist, who was very helpful in giving us some local advice and recommendations. The room was immaculately clean and was decorated beautifully in a modern and contemporary style. It was extremely relaxing and comfortable with crisp white bed linen. The balcony had amazing views over the sky blue lake of Zahara.
We decided on the chefs tasting menu for the evening meal, which was served on the terrace of the hotel. The style of modern/contemporary continued with the food as we were served up a memorable meal accompanied by some wonderful wine recommended by Mona (the owner).
All in all a wonderful stay and very friendly hosts who go out of there way to ensure that you leave with happy memories.
