This is a very easy mountain to climb for relatively minimal effort, even in winter (we went on 12/11/13). My 64 and 70-year old parents and I hiked from the parking area on Prosper Rd up Prosper Trail, to a short section of North Ridge Loop, past the Pogue (a small lake) to Mount Tom Road and up to the South Peak of Mt. Tom. It had just snowed a bit that morning and the light fluffy snow was fine for walking through with regular hiking boots. Many of the trails are old carriage roads that wind around and up the slope at a very easy grade. The scenery was breathtaking and you can easily spend several hours here exploring. The view from the south peak was impressive. There are other options for steeper hikes, and the trail signs are well marked with the varying difficulty levels: easy, moderate, etc.

Beautiful trail starting right in town. Hiked it on a rainy fall morning and had it all to myself. Awesome. Clouds parted for views of town and countryside, Wow! A must do. Highly recommend.

We walked for 3 and a half hours up and around Mount Tom in. Woodstock, Vermont. The scenery was beautiful in the Fall. All the tracks were well signposted and so there was no fear of getting lost. We reached a lake called The Pogue and it was breathtaking. We walked for miles but it was all so easy we never felt tired until we got to the final descent. It was steep and the stones were wet and slippery. There were no warning signs. I was fine in my walking boots but anyone not so well-equipped or frail would have got into trouble. Best to take the track down you came up if you have any doubts. But the whole hike was great and well worth it.

Spend a few hours. Get up to the view points.

Pick a fairly dry day.

Also try Mt. Peg, which is south of town off Golf Avenue where Maple Street begins.

The Faulkner Trail at Mount Tom is a perfect family hike. It begins as a gentle gravel path and gradually progresses over about 1.5 miles of switchbacks to easy wooded terrain, steeper rocky slopes, and finally to a summit with steep drops to one side + guy wires to hold onto. There are several rest points with benches, plus picturesque waypoints like a small stone bridge and a scenic overlook just shy of the more challenging final climb. Also you can cut across the switchbacks at several points for a shorter, more strenuous ascent. Our children (ages 5 & 7) completed it with just a little hand-holding, having done several shorter hikes before. Great way to spend the morning.
