To be fair, our initial impression of the hotel was positive! The property is brand new and beautifully decorated. We were greeted warmly by the front desk staff and assigned to a room on the lower level. The room was clean and comfortable. We had a very good meal at the restaurant, but service was spotty. We were asked if we wanted bread but it never appeared. We inquired about the bread to our server and were told that because they were unexpectedly busy there was "no room on the grill to prepare it". (Thought this was a curious explanation.) At the end of our meal we were given two rolls which were split and toasted. We would have gladly had the untoasted rolls with salad/soup had we been given the choice. Lastly, and most disturbingly, my husband was getting ready to shower and turned on the tub faucet. When he pulled up on the knob to start the shower, the entire heavy metal tub faucet blew off the wall with enough force to hit the back wall of the tub! Had he been standing in the tub (as I would surely have been) he would have been struck on the shins and undoubtedly injured. The front desk sent a gentleman/retired plumber, who stated that the this was the first time the room had been rented and that the screw holding the faucet onto the pipe had not been tightened. He got a wrench and tightened it, but it made for very anxious, quick showers! It made us wonder what other safety details may have been overlooked during construction. In any quality hotel, management would have been aghast and taken steps to show sincere regret. Unfortunately, all we were offered was a cursory "sorry". The beauty of the decor will not carry this hotel unless they upgrade the customer service. On future trips, we will stay at the Woodstock Inn

Room Tip: Upper levels have better views.

506OntheRiver, General Manager at 506 On The River Inn, responded to this reviewResponded 21 August 2014

Dear Pierannunz,
Thank you for your review. We are disappointed that a few unfortunate incidents marred what otherwise appears to have been an enjoyable stay at 506. We have the pleasure of working in a brand new property which means that the facilities and rooms offer the latest standards and are subject to stringent construction and safety requirements by the State of Vermont. The newly built facility was pressure tested and certified by the State of Vermont. Despite this, as a brand new building, there are some incidents that unfortunately can occur. The tub faucet itself was used many times since construction to clean the bath and tub surround so it was not the first time it was in use. You actually spoke about the incident with our Front Office manager who apologized profusely, was very concerned, and made sure that you were not hurt - which you were not. The health and safety of our guests is our utmost priority. As the minor kinks get worked out on a new building, you should be assured that with new construction generally comes excellent standards and services that offer the highest comfort and safety for our guests that may not be available in older facilities. We welcome the opportunity to have you stay with us again as we have addressed the issues that caused you concern in your review.
Sincerely,
Management of On the River Inn

We had reserved a room here and another night somewhere else! We cancelled the other hotel and stayed here because it was so nice! The continental breakfast was the best I have ever had. Kim and Jere certainly love their jobs and they are good at it! The people here are just so friendly! It was a joy to stay here and we will go back!!

We always knew we wanted to visit Woodstock, VT. We have heard such great things about it. We finally decided to take a road trip north when our friends told us about this wonderful new family owned Inn "On the River".

We drove into Woodstock, after many hours on the road, with two very tired children and found the hotel without any trouble. It is right on the river, as the name suggests, and just a few miles from town.

We checked in smoothly. The receptionist was very welcoming. We were told that it was "burger" night" in the restaurant. That was a big hit with the kids so we quickly decided that we would not have to go out again, but that we would stay there for dinner.

After unloading the bags we went to the restaurant. Lively jazz was playing in the bar. There seemed to be a bit of a local buzz in the bar. The decor was so cool! Old barn wood and leather couches....it was so inviting after traveling all day. I remember my husband saying he wished that we had a babysitter for the night. It was such a great spot to hang out and have a drink!

Now here comes the family friendly part. The kids discovered an awesome game room in the hotel. They had old pinball machines and air hockey. The kids loved it - so of course - so did we! One of the waitresses said it was a family owned hotel and that the owners have young kids so they understand what families need when they are traveling.

I would highly recommend 506 On the River for any family (or couple) traveling through Woodstock. We even went into the river in front of the hotel with the kids. I am not sure we were supposed to - but we did.

We will definitely visit Woodstock again and definitely stay at 506 On the River Inn.

We had dinner here recently and it was excellent. We sat at the bar and enjoyed service from Max. The ambiance is intimate and sophisticated. Max also showed us a room after dinner and we would consider staying here when we visit Woodstock in the future. Thank you!

We just stayed for a long weekend. We came up from Rhode Island and brought our dogs. The Inn is beautifully done, with the hospitality of a B&B. The staff really went out of their way. The location is on a river, very scenic. Excellent food, all home cooked. We definitely plan on coming back!!
