“An Amazing Retreat”
Reviewed 7 August 2013

I spent a wonderful long weekend at the Jackson House Inn for a getaway with friends. Upon arriving I was greeted by Kathy and immediately felt welcomed. She was a wonderful resource throughout the entire weekend, answering any questions we had and providing a variety of suggestions to places to go and see. Rick is also a gracious host and his breakfasts are AMAZING. Everything is local and you can tell he puts a lot of time and effort into everything he prepares. I have never tastes anything so delicious.

The property itself it beautiful! The Terwelps made sure to keep the historic nature of the inn while making the inn feel welcoming and homey. The rooms were extremely clean and the beds were very comfortable. Every room has its own bathroom and the products provided were wonderful. The inn is located on a beautiful piece of property and you are able to just wander around an take it all in. We enjoyed sitting on the porch and even sitting one morning by the pond. I would highly recommend the inn and can't wait to visit again. Rick and Kathy went above and beyond to make sure our group had an wonderful weekend. Thank you for such an amazing trip.

Having lived in Connecticut for over 30 years before moving south, we were familiar with the quaint, attractive town of Woodstock, VT. We were on a nostalgia return tour of New England and the town is one of our favorite places, but we were not familiar with this inn. What a find! The inn is located about a mile from the center of Woodstock, so you do have to drive into town, but it is so worth it.
Owners Rick and Kathy have turned this historic 19th century home into a delightful retreat.
The huge back yard and garden alone is worth the visit: a wide expanse of green lawn adorned by a babbling brook and bridge, a rock garden, an Alberta spruce copse, an herb garden, a pond, a variety of flowers and several mature old pines and other trees. The common sitting rooms include a library and have the comfortable look and feel of a well-kept country estate. The newer dining room is contemporary with a cathedral ceiling, large center fireplace and plentiful windows looking out on the landscaped lawn. There is even a small nook of a bar. You can also sit on the large front porch which faces Senior Lane (so called because the Senior Center is on it). The lane and house are sheltered from the highway by a border of trees.
The guest rooms seem to be all fairly large. Ours was on the ground floor of a newer wing. It had a comfy king size bed, a spacious bathroom and a patio overlooking the back lawn. It also had a fireplace for winter visits, but we certainly did not need it though the weather moderated here into highs in the 70s.
It is hard to properly describe the wonderful breakfasts prepared by Rick. He obviously loves to cook and is very creative with the combination of ingredients he uses in his dishes. After each presentation he comes out of the kitchen to carefully describe what is in the dish. Almost every ingredient is from a local farm or producer. Kathy is a very gracious hostess and helped us with dinner reservations through her Top Table account. They both seem to be working constantly on the upkeep of the grounds or the house.
We are so glad we found this inn and Rick and Kathy. It will be the first place we stay when we return to northern New England.

Room Tip: There are four rooms in the new wing where we stayed and they all look out on the back gardens. The...

We just came back from a two night stay at the Jackson House for our wedding anniversary. We have stayed at the property more than a dozen times since 1991, but this is only the third stay with Rick and Kathy as owners, and as in the past, they did not disappoint! We have always been enchanted by the Inn, the beautiful rooms and furnishings, the gorgeous gardens, and the cozy public spaces, but Rick and Kathy take the experience to a whole new level. They are terrific hosts who really make a special effort to make every guest feel welcome! Now that we have been there a few times, they know some of our tastes and go the extra mile to make sure we are just delighted and taken care of every step of the way, from check in to check out! No detail is missed - the service is just amazing!

We find the best part about our visits to Woodstock are the moments we just spend lingering at the Inn, whether it's lying in the garden reading a good book, savoring the sumptuous breakfasts, having a drink from the excellent selection of wines and beers in the evening, but most of all just enjoying Rick and Kathy's company. A visit to the Jackson House really doesn't feel like staying in a hotel away from home, it is more akin to visiting old friends!

We should say a word about the breakfasts, which Rick personally prepares every morning and which are as good or better than most meals we have had even in five-star establishments! Rick has an incredible palate and is a true master of flavors - plus the quality of ingredients, most sourced from local farms, is beyond compare. Every breakfast is prepared lovingly and from scratch! Rick's "presentation" of each breakfast course is a joy to savor and we are so eager each morning to descend to the breakfast room and discover the tantalizing delights he has in store for us! These meals alone are worth the trip!!!

We can't say enough about the Jackson House and especially how it has blossomed with Kathy and Rick as innkeepers. We plan to return again and again, at least twice a year if not more often. We don't consider Rick and Kathy to be just our hosts, they are our good friends as well! We can't wait for our next visit!

Room Tip: The third floor suites, Francesca and Nicholas I, are our favorites. They feature balconies overloo...

There isn't much about Woodstock that I don't like, but I now have to add the Jackson House Inn as a place that I love! Kathy and Rick are gracious hosts. The rooms are spacious and accommodating. The new HVAC units are so quiet we had a hard time believing that the air conditioning was even on. The food is extraordinary (locally sourced, plentiful, and delicious -- Rick shares his cooking methods and locales of all ingredients). The grounds are large and immaculately kept. Kathy recommended a local farm-to-table restaurant (Cloudland Farm) and secured a reservation for us (it was fabulous). Although there are numerous wonderful B&Bs in Woodstock, this one is now my favorite.

Room Tip: We stayed in the more recent addition. Rooms in the main home might be quieter, as we heard our neig...

My wife and I went up to the Jackson House Inn for a nice quiet weekend and chance to ski, and had an amazing experience! The innkeepers were incredibly thoughtful and present, the breakfast was to die for, our room was beautifully decorated and we were less than 30 minutes from the mountain!! We will be back again next year for sure!

We stayed at The Jackson House Inn for two nights, and it could not have been more perfect. Rick and Kathy are gracious hosts, and all of the laudatory comments about Rick's breakfasts have not been oversold. He sources local ingredients and uses his natural talents to present the best breakfasts you will ever have. Beyond breakfast, the inn is posh yet comfortable, with wonderful beds, decadent bathrooms, and impeccable grounds. Rick and Kathy know how to do B & B. They're warm, and make you feel completely at home, while also creating a sense of privacy for their guests. Woodstock is a charming town, and this is a wonderful place to stay. You can't go wrong here, and you'll vow to return.

I cannot recall an experience at an inn that was as comprehensively beyond expectations as our entire visit to Jackson House Inn. Rick's welcome reception and personal introduction to the inn, the grounds, and the room was generous and warm. The inn as so well maintained, neat, and inviting, and the room was exceptional: beautiful view of the immaculate and expansive grounds; the furnishings were superior; everything was pristine and gleamed; the AC was silent (inside and out by the compressor! a real improvement over other places we have stayed); and the therapy tub offered relief for weary travelers. Kathy is just as present with respect to attention as Rick, and she arranged a reservation at a restaurant that proved to be one of the very best in the area. And, you have to make sure you attend one of Rick's breakfast happenings. His passion for the culinary arts and local foods is beyond anything we've ever experienced, and he presented each course with articulate and astute grace. Gourmet - 10 stars! Rick and Kathy clearly care about everything and everyone, and it shows! Simply perfect, thank you!
