“An ideal place for sweet´s lovers”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

Surrounded by nature in front of the mountain where vultures live. The hotel is an old oil mill restored into hotel. Decorated tastefully. Excellent plates, cured meats, cheeses and wines of the region. But are essential sweets and artisans cakes of Monica. I must return only for taste another time the chocolat cake. And very important, all them are glutlen free.

Room Tip: The suites with fireplace are much more spacious

The hotel is situated just to the south of the beautiful white village of El Bosque set in gorgeous countryside, overlooked by a tall green cliff face. Dotted around the grounds are small tables and chairs, plants, herbs and other decorations.

The hotel is in a converted oil mill, with a number of different buildings stylishly decorated to accommodate their guests. I was lucky enough to get the largest suite on offer, with a double bed downstairs and three single beds on the mezzanine floor. The decoration is simple and uncluttered, with some lovely antique-looking pieces and distressed furniture. The bathroom was huge, with a large walk-in shower and lovely, traditional patterned tiles. It even had a small lounge area of its own. The only downsides of the room were a lack of aircon, it had no tv (not that I wanted a tv but a lot of people would), and it had a damp smell about it.

Outside, at the back, is a patio area where we were served lunch and dinner, overlooking the countryside. The food we were served, including tortilla, carrillada, ajo blanco, a range of salads, and flan, were all delicious. There is a pool at the other side which I didn’t try, but a colleague of mine did and reported it to be a very welcome refreshing experience when it’s 38 degrees outside! Anyone wanting a relaxing weekend away in a lovely hotel, with very nice hosts and excellent food should definitely check it out!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The old 19th century oil mill has been completely renovated in the last few years, sparing no cost and paying great attention to detail, and transformed into a country b&b hotel. It was important to keep all the old elements so that none of its original character was lost. Every day you can discover old relics from the past which add to the charm and uniqueness of the finca. El Vihuelo combines the originality of the past with the comfort of modern times, all under one roof. The hotel is comprised of several buildings in which the six bedrooms and apartments, as well as a cosy breakfast room and lounge area, are to be found. The spacious grounds have been lovingly designed using typically Mediterranean plants. There are many little corners for quiet moments and large terraces to relax on and enjoy the unique 360° view. You can cool off in the swimming pool during the summer months and watch the vultures nesting in the steep cliffs of the mountain opposite the pool. El Vihuelo is a unique place for relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet of the surrounding countryside. The region around El Bosque has many different tourist attractions to offer which are worth a visit: The picturesque white villages Grazalema, Ubrique, Zahara de la Sierra and Arcos de la Frontera can be reached in less than 30 minutes. Jerez, centre of Spanish sherry production and home of the royal riding school, is situated only 60 km away. The provincial capital Cadiz with its coast as well as Sevilla, capital of Andalusia and considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, can be reached within an hour by car. The nature reserve of Sierra de Grazalema is inviting for the hiker. There are many different routes that are well described and signposted. Furthermore one of the most beautiful spots for paragliding in Andalusia is to be found at the cliffs of El Bosque – offering the perfect flight conditions for the beginner as well as the advanced paraglider. Many local paragliders offer tandem flights. ... more   less
