“Keep this between you and me”
Reviewed 26 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

The last day at molinocaracol looms and neither of us want to leave. The tiny bats that come every evening to swoop over the pool catching the late evening insects that occupy the air over the cool green garden fill the air with a magical nature that extends out across the national park across the crystal clear river fed by the springs and deep mountain water of the Benoajan limestone just over the wall of our garden paradise and out and up onto the high ridge that frames the late evening sun of rural Andalusian Spain. I have run in the cool early shade up along the track that follows the river with their huge shoals of Andalusian barbel catching the rising sun of another blue blue day as the moon still hangs above the high peaks. Here with their Neolithic caves where a thousand generations ago our Cro-Magnon ancestors drew deer and goats and huge flat fish with iron oxide and animal fat that we both marvelled at 32,000 years later one afternoon in August 2016 in the Cueva de la Pileta. We walked up under the massive wall of El Hacho just outside of Montejaque watching the griffin vultures circle on the thermals rushing up the rock walls and sat in olive groves and Mediterranean oaks up on the high hills toward Ronda. We walked the stage of a long forgotten Roman amphitheatre in Acinipo in the late afternoon sun trying to imagine the billions of lives that have come and gone since the last line of the last play echoed around the high walls of the ruined Roman town of old Ronda. We swam in the fluorescent blue pool at our 500 year watermill home of molinodecaricol as the stars came out and drank good Spanish red wine and ate home cooked spiced chorizo and rice under the ancient fig tree on the terrace whose heart burst long ago but continues to produce sweet figs despite its antiquity. The cool air con in the bedrooms, the sensitive sophisticated and simple traditional mix of decor in the old water mill nestled by the river. The cool breeze coming through the old shuttered windows on a late hot afternoon in the lounge, the meals above the pool on the terrace, the wonderful attention and personalised service provided by the owner Paco, the private use of what seemed to be an ancient Spanish dwelling as if someone had just given over their home for 10 days to us exclusively. I cannot express just how magical and wonderful this place is. I know reviews are always tricky to decipher but I tell you straight this is the most magical place I have spent 10 days in any holiday I have ever had and believe me there have been many. It's as if someone had shown you a very secret place, known only to those that had the good fortune to pick by sheer luck this beautiful watermill on a cold winters day surfing the net for a holiday. Seriously, I want to live here. If you are a family, a group or a couple into privacy, old Spanish with all mod cons on the edge of the stunning landscape and mountains of the national parks of Andalusia I cannot recommend enough molinodecaricol. Please don't tell anyone else. It's just between you and I....OK?

“Perfect”
Reviewed 29 July 2016 for a stay in July 2016

I recently stayed in this beautiful house with my partner, our two young children and my parents. It was very hot summer weather while we were there but we always felt cool and comfortable. The house is very spacious, the pool and grassy area are delightful and the bbq perfect for cooking. It is a short drive to Ronda and the stunning Cueva del Gato.

“Cool Pool with a relaxing house and garden”
Reviewed 31 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

Thank you Paco, To get to the property we were meet at a café and taken to the house. It's lovely location is nestled in next to the river. This house and garden is well maintained, the owner is there most day raking and maintaining the gardens beautifully. This location is close to historic Ronda and has much history of it's own. We stayed in the height of summer and we very comfortable day and night.

“A wonderful stay in a former water mill”
Reviewed 15 July 2015 for a stay in July 2015

I have just returned from a short holiday with my partner and relatives. There was 6 people in our group including two children. Casa Rural Molino del Caracol was the perfect place to stay, relax and unwind. The house has real history having been converted from a former water mill. It has that old house charm and has been carefully looked after. The house was very comfortable and well appointed. It was very hot outside yet the house with its thick stone walls remained a cool retreat inside. The bedrooms, all upstairs, had individual air-conditioning which was also perfect. The two bathrooms, one an ensuite, worked really well for a larger group. The house looks exactly like the pictures - in fact it felt larger in some aspects than the pictures. The garden and pool area overlooking the river at the back of the property are lovely and we spent many hours sitting and relaxing in the garden and swimming in the pool. It was a fabulous base to explore Rhonda and the local surrounds. Paco provided some excellent recommendations on things to do in the area which added to the experience - there are a couple of great walks to start from the house. We will certainly return when next in the area and thank Paco and his wife for being such perfect hosts.

“A well appointed cottage in a beautiful spot”

Stayed for a week in the Casa Rural Molino del Caracol. It's a well converted old mill. It offers very comfortable and well equipped accommodation (even runs to a coffee pod machine - with pods!). The three bedrooms are all air conditioned (which was lovely in the 34 degree heat) but the ground floor remained lovely and cool without any air con because of the thick white stone walls and breeze. The garden was beautiful and overlooks the river and National Park beyond - and the heated pool was an absolute joy! (Paco the owner pops round every other day to clean the pool, water the garden, dead head, tidy it etc).

Benaojan (main) village is a 'healthy' walk up the hill (or a much less tiring drive) where there is a small supermarket and butchers etc.......but Benaojan Station (where the cottage lies) in the bottom of the valley offers a couple of bars, a restaurant and a decent hotel/restaurant (Molino de Santa). These are open pretty much daily in peak season (bars and restaurant) but be aware during June it's a bit more hit and miss (the owners need holiday's too!).

You don't need to eat out however.....there is a lovely BBQ area in the garden and larger supermarkets etc are in Ronda - just a 10-15 minute drive - or indeed a train ride away.

All in all a truly idyllic place to stay and somewhere I would heartily recommend - for walkers, those with young families (who want a secure garden and pool etc), couples or indeed small groups of friends..... We'll definitely be going back!

“Very comfortable accommodation, ideally situated”
Reviewed 26 April 2015 for a stay in March 2015

I spent ten days at the Caracaol in Benaojan. We were five adults and we had plenty of room. There is a lovely big sitting room, very well equipped kitchen and two excellent bathrooms. The weather was quite cold so we used the central heating and the fire. The owners are extremely helpful and the house is very clean and well looked after. It was too early to use the pool but it would be ideal in summer. You can go for lovely walks straight from the house and it is a short drive to Ronda. Highly recommended.
