This small museum is a off the beaten path, having no street frontage on the Emory campus. It's well worth a visit. The Egyptian collection is a fine as I have ever seen, in a beautiful setting.

In the South there is no other place to view relics and Antiquities from the Ancients than this excellent source. Hammurabi's Stele (exact replica taken from original from 100 years ago, when those kinds of copies were permitted), real Egyptian mummies, and Roman mosaics name a few. A rare audio guide, detailing how many of the artifacts are mentioned in the Bible, is a boon, as well.

This museum could be one of my favorite museums in the entire world. Although small, the collections, from cultures like ancient Iran and ancient Costa Rica, astounded me. Almost every major ancient culture is represented in that museum, which does make it comparable to the Met in NYC. My multiple visits that I did while in Atlanta were each spectacular. Don't forget to visit the bookstore, it is also has a rich extensive collection.

If you are in the Emory area, the Carlos museum is a great place to spend 45 minutes. They have a nice little Egyptian exhibit with real mummies. There are roman statues and other antiquities. But this is not a place to see paintings. While in the area, check out the Special Collections on the top of Woodruff library, which is open to the public.

A small museum can either do many things with mediocre results or one thing exceedingly well. The Michael Carlos has an absolutely wonderful collection of ancient art - Egyptian, Greek, Roman and pre-Columbian. The curators are top notch.
Special exhibitions most of the time.
Comparatively low admission.
