Owner description: Step back in time in Atlanta's most tangible link to the past, Oakland Cemetery. This historical park is the final resting place for many Civil War soldiers, golfing legend Bobby Jones, and "Gone With the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell.

“Visited graves of Margaret Mitchell and Bobby Jones”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2014

After touring the Margaret Mitchell house it only seemed appropriate to see the gravesite; it is located in a lovely cemetery surrounded by a tall brick wall. The grave is clearly marked; also visited Bobby Jones' grave where numerous golf balls, some signed were left. The cemetery is lovely, although some of the gutters showed damaged from rain runoff. The graves of many Civil War dead from the Battle of Atlanta are also buried there.

“Prettiest place in Atlanta”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2014

I have been going to Oakland for over 10 years. It is the prettiest place in Atlanta, the oldest and a peaceful setting in the heart of the city. They have great events throughout the year that are enjoyable while educational or just taking a stroll on the weekend. Oakland is a great place to take out of towners too. Highly recommend!

“Atlanta History under your feet”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

July 24 visit to historic Oakland Cemetery in East Atlanta where the parking is free, the main characters are quiet, and the history of Atlanta is ubiquitous. It is a lovely park in which to stroll or jog, refresh your Atlanta history knowledge, or have a picnic (yep, I said picnic). Even dogs are welcome to come along, with pet potty stations throughout the grounds. There are even some dogs buried with their owners there.
Well-known residents include Margaret Mitchell-Marsh (author of Gone With the Wind); Mayor Maynard Jackson (yeah, his name is the same as the Atlanta Airport); and Bobby Jones (designer of Augusta National Golf Course for you Masters Tournament fans).
Spend an hour or two and get to know the residents; they have a great story to tell.

Oakland Cemetery is a great place to learn a little more about Atlanta's history. There are guided tours or you can just take your time by yourself and stroll through this peaceful historical site.

“History and Genealogy....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

If you want to walk among the "who's who" of "old" Atlanta, Oakland is the place. Great Civil War history, graves of Bobby Jones, Margaret Mitchell, Rich brothers.....and many Civil War soldiers. New Atlanta is represented as well by Mayor Maynard Jackson.
