Owner description: Step back in time in Atlanta's most tangible link to the past, Oakland Cemetery. This historical park is the final resting place for many Civil War soldiers, golfing legend Bobby Jones, and "Gone With the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell.

Historic Oakland Cemetery is not a site to go visit if you are in a hurry. The place is huge, so there is a LOT of walking involved. However, if you take your time, stroll at a slow pace, and take advantage of the many shady spots and sitting benches, you can spend an enjoyable and relaxing day. There are a lot of beautiful crypts, sculptures and headstones to be scene, as well as lots of ancient magnolia trees. If you are a fan of cemeteries then Oakland is not one to be missed.

I had the opportunity to visit my great-grandfather's grave in the Confederate section of Oakland Cemetery. The staff was very helpful and provided me with a map to help me find the exact spot quickly. The architecture of the visitor building and individual monuments and crypts are extremely interesting and crowded together, making your average modern cemetery seem sad and lonely by comparison. When you visit, you can drive inside and park anywhere as long as you don't block the roads. If you enjoy history, take the opportunity to visit when you're in the area.

This tranquil final resting place in the heart of Atlanta should not be missed.
My reasons for going was to see the Civil War graves, including the beautiful "Lion of Atlanta", but there's many more fascinating things to see.
Spend the four dollars and buy a map from the friendly staff in the office, to get the most out of this experience

Atlanta does not treat its history well, but this is an exception. It is well worth a visit, it is full of lovely things, There's a wide selection of tour subjects available with docents and audio guides through your phone.

It's just beautiful out there.

After touring the Margaret Mitchell house it only seemed appropriate to see the gravesite; it is located in a lovely cemetery surrounded by a tall brick wall. The grave is clearly marked; also visited Bobby Jones' grave where numerous golf balls, some signed were left. The cemetery is lovely, although some of the gutters showed damaged from rain runoff. The graves of many Civil War dead from the Battle of Atlanta are also buried there.
