“A Dump”
Reviewed 26 November 2012

Location is excellent for visiting my son. However, the room was filthy. When plugging in computer behind nightstand, noted it had not been vacuumed in a decade. There were 5 lights in the room... 2 had burned out bulbs. Requested new light bulbs. 2 replaced while we were out. The third, the reading light by the bed was not. The bathroom flourescent was barely lighting (constant dark flicker), so we used the heat lamp for lighting. The TP roll was low when we arrived and there was no extra roll to be had. Apparently, housekeeping at this motel is a thing of the past for the beds were not made up the first morning nor was new linen provided. The computer went off line at 8:30 PM and stayed off. Do not know when it came back on.

The rating of two was given only because the desk staff was very friendly and helpful. The warm cookies are excellent and the continental breakfast was very nice.

The University Inn at Emory is a small hotel in a safe area that is very convenient to Emory's campus. I got a reasonable rate as a part of the Emory special they offer. The hotel has free wi-fi, which worked fine for me and was actually faster than the internet I've had in some larger chain hotels. Parking was also free. The breakfast was standard continental breakfast fare, and while not anything special, it wasn't bad either. My sleep quality was not largely affected by the noise from traffic outside, though that was readily audible. However, my sleep was affected by the clanking of the air conditioning unit that occurred throughout the night. The room itself was spacious, though out-dated. My main qualm was the cleanliness of the room. On the floor, there was a rather large ball of what appeared to be pet hair.

Room Tip: Rooms in the guest house are more newly renovated.

If you need to stay within walking distance of the Emory campus this is the place. If you want a clean, quiet, comfortable hotel, look elsewhere. It is basically a Motel with outside entrance to rooms and located on busy road from which you hear much traffic noise. Also had mildew in shower and the room felt dingy without much light.

I came to this hotel knowing that I was looking for family friendly location conveniently located next to Emory University and the hospital. What made my experience the greatest was the true southern hospitality from the staff. The free wine and cookies in the evening were definitely a plus! I enjoyed being able to walk around the Emory University campus with my family and then go out to dinner in the small town of Decatur.

Room Tip: The Guest House rooms were the nicer of all the choices. I think they renovated it not too long ago.

Looking for temporary housing while our home was undergoing major repair, we were very excited to find a place near home and MARTA with a full kitchen.

We didn't check any online reviews because we have passed The University Inn at Emory hundreds of times and it has great curb appeal and a quiet, on-campus location. I had expected a kind of small, bed and breakfast kind of a place and was somewhat surprised to discover that it is essentially a motor inn with a few homey touches.

First for the homey touches:

The staff are universally friendly and helpful, and the lobby area is very sweet with a well stocked around-the-clock coffee/tea bar and delicious, warm cookies in the evening.

There is a small, private pool and although we couldn't swim because it stormed both nights of our stay, it looked nice.

The breakfast is adequate - generous cups of yogurt and bottles of fruit juice, along with the usual assortment of breads and muffins, apples and bananas. The "homemade cereal" looked like a mixture of commercial cereals such as raisin bran and granola, plus some dried fruit.

We loved the toiletries provided - some of the best of any place where we have stayed.

As for our main room and bathroom, they were old, worn and dingy but clean. However, we chose The University Inn because of a kitchen, and unfortunately the kitchen in our unit was absolutely filthy. The cabinets and drawers were literally sticky to the touch and the dishes and pots/pans were grimy with old food. We were fine there for a couple of nights but decided to stay elsewhere for the rest of our time away from home. We did pass on our suggestion to have the kitchen in that particular unit thoroughly cleaned.

Overall the University Inn has exemplary service, a great location and some nice features. However, the rooms and grounds are in need of renovation and more thorough cleaning so we would not stay there again or recommend it.

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry that you found the kitchen in that condition. It is very important to feel clean when you have to sleep away from home. Your comments will be addressed by our maintenance team.

My daughter and I stayed here the night before our visit to Emory University. While we LOVED the university, this MOTEL was a disappointment. First, I had no idea that the doors were on the exterior of the building or I would not have booked here. This facility is old and not aging well. Our room was not very clean and had an ancient heat/air unit that rattled all night. The continental breakfast consisted of the saddest looking muffins I have ever seen and coffee. They shouldn't have even bothered. This room was not worth half what I paid for it.

We stayed at the University Inn while my son attended chess camp at Emory. The location was within walking distance to all of the camp buildings. The staff was friendly and courteous. Our stay included free internet, continental breakfast and happy hour M-F which included a selection of several wines, beers, coffee, tea, freshly baked cookies, nuts and snack mix. The hotel lobby has a very homey feel and everyone was friendly. The rooms are outdated and need some TLC, but they are very large and include a mini fridge and microwave. Our room was on the third floor (walk up only - no elevator). They also offer apartments for long term stays. The hotel is located in a beautiful neighborhood where we were able to walk safely and explore. There is a neighborhood park (work in progress) on the block behind the hotel. There are also several great restaurants within walking distance or a short drive. We look forward to staying there during camp next year.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor.
