“Drunk Men in the Lobby on Arrival”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2011

We stayed at the Fairfield in Vinings, this past Friday and Saturday nights using Marriott points. Hubby and I were going to Six Flags over Georgia on Saturday for my company's picnic, so we made it a weekend in Atlanta. A hotel near the theme park was what we were looking for, and the Fairfield in Vinings was only about 10 minutes away. It was not a weekend at the Ritz-Carlton, just very basic, even compared to other Fairfield Inns we've stayed at previously.

When we arrived, i noticed the trash bin outside the front door was overflowing - not a good sign. Right inside the door in the small area near front desk, there were 6 very loud and intoxicated men sitting on the sofas. They had several twelve packs of beer and their empty cans were lined up all the way around the coffee table. It took about 15 minutes to check in, as there were 2 couples ahead of us, and only one desk clerk. The desk clerk had to ask my husband the same question twice because he interrupted my husbands answer the first time, in order to help one of the drunken men who had walked up to the desk. None of this was a very good first impression.

Our room was on the 5th floor, facing the front of the hotel. The bathroom vanity was tiny with only about 4 inches of perimeter counter space around the sink. There was no true closet with a door, only a recessed clothes rod hanging in the vanity sink area. They had the ironing board rack hung in the closet area in such a way so that the feet of the ironing board stuck out about 3 inches, right about nose high, and was a hazard as you came around the corner to the vanity/bathroom area. We took down the ironing board and leaned it against the wall. Also, there was no luggage rack. The room appeared generally clean and in good repair, but there was only a 1/2 roll of TP, and no spare when we checked in. We had to go to the front desk as they didn't have anyone to bring some to us.

I've gotten to the point trying to never go barefoot and wearing slippers in all hotel rooms, so of course, I found the sticky spots those times my bare feet touched the carpet. The bed was very comfortable however, and we both slept really well. The room was pretty quiet for the most part. The room had a microwave and a fridge which was nice to have, however we didn't use the microwave. We didn't use the pool or the gym area either so I can't comment on those.

Breakfast was a ZOO on Saturday, and we didn't even bother on Sunday. It is in a tiny area off the lobby and the selection was small. There were no hot foods, just a waffle maker that had a long line with people making 3 or 4 waffles at a time, so the line never moved. Other "guests" were so unbelievably rude and would break in front of you and reach around you, pecking like seagulls for the meager offerings. There was a small fridge there with pre-packaged sausage biscuits that you could nuke. People were filling up trays full of food, nuking them in their rooms I guess. There were bagels and cereals and yogurt. There were some green bananas too - yuck! Everything was running low, from plates to food, and it was about 8:30. Thankfully there is a Starbucks 2 blocks away.

In short, nice beds, in-room fridge, good location. If my first impression had been better, my review might have been nicer. Also worth mentioning, there was a very nice restaurant nearby that is upscale and trendy, and we had a good time at dinner there. It is called Social Vinings, and if you go, try their homemade white peach Sangria! Their creme brulee was really good, as was their sushi.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor away from the interstate side.

This hotel is typical of the Marriott Fairfield Suite brand. Nicely furnished, though somewhat dated. Very comfortable bed , nice bedding, excellent air conditioning and ample space. A sitting area provided an additional TV ( kind of redundant in a hotel room), a sofa, desk microwave, mini fridge. Bath was somewhat dated, thin towels. a decent choice when traveling across the US. Breakfast at the Fairfield chain is just adequate.

Very good breakfast for free! Rooms are basic and nice enought. The staff was competent. I agree that there should be an actual blanket. You might want to take your own in case everyone in the room doesn't agree on the temperature setting. The beds are a little stiff for our tastes. The pool is very basic/small in case you plan to use that. The workout room is also small and one treadmill wasn't working. The equipment is a little too old/basic, although I was able to get in run on one of the treadmills.

Actually checked out early and went to a different hotel farther from the city. Only got stuck here because of a lack of gov't rate rooms in town. If this is a bargain for you, it may suffice, but it lacks the comfort a road warrior needs. Internet speed was appallingly slow most of the time -- one 1500kbps measurement was the outlier in a sea of 50-100kbps, even in the lobby. That's practically dial-up! The rooms lack a mini-fridge or microwave; I know it states this in the description, but what hotel these days have neither? The single bedspread is pretty thin, and there is no extra blanket in the closet, so don't turn the air conditioning down too low, there will be no bundling up in bed. The bed itself is decent -- a fairly dense memory foam topper gives a firm but comfortable support. Finally, one side of the hotel is literally a stone's throw from I-285, which made for quick access to the city (and the nearby Vinings neighborhood has plenty to choose from for dinner), but it means I had to sleep with earplugs in to deal with the 24-hour flow of trucks and traffic. Business travelers, you don't want to stay here for a hard-working meeting.

Basic. Nice & clean. Not what I expected from Marriott, but good for an overnighter. Wouldn't want to stay for more than a night as it is rather small. Breakfast was good though.

I was charged a smoking fee of $250.00- I don't smoke- NEVER HAVE! When speaking with management- he had the nerve to tell me he inspected the room, but he didn't know my name. How can you inspect my room, charge me, and not know my name. How did he know what room I was checked into if I didn't tell him my name?

The rooms were supposedly renovated last year- but there was mold on the ceiling in the bathroom.

As a Marriott property we have a 100% smoke free hotel policy and we are very vigilant to adhere it. Based on inspection of the room in question we found evidence of smoking and charged a cleaning fee. We pride ourselves on providing all of our guests a fresh, clean room for every visit.

This hotel provides no cameras in the parking lots and takes no responsibility for theft of your car. We stayed one night, I was at the car at 11pm and in the morning we had our window broken in and GPS was stolen along with some of our luggage.

If you stay at this hotel, don't leave anything in your car or it will be stolen.

We are sorry to hear about this unfortunate incident on your recent stay in Atlanta. We recommend to all of our guests not to leave valuable items such as GPS's and laptops insight in your vehicle at anytime. The hotel has a well lit parking lot and multiple signs advising guests to please not to leave valuables in sight in their cars as this is an inviting opportunity for the criminal element.
