Owner description: Andalusia's mountainous Alpujarra region features Spain's highest peak, Mulhacén, rising to a height of 3,478 meters. It provides perhaps the best walking and hiking country in Andalucia and boasts many picturesque villages for the less adventurous traveler.

We stayed near Trevelez for 3 days and toured the area by car as well as some walking. The White Village drives (Capileira, Bubion & Pampineira are the well known ones) are a great way to see the Sierra Nevada region. There are lots of less well known but equally stunning villages with hardly any tourists in sight. The people here are very friendly, the food amazing and, surprisingly, the tourists tend to stay in the few 'hot spots' and not venture into the heart of this area. A car is essential to fully appreciate what is on offer here
Highly recommended - great antidote to the frenetic pace of the towns and beaches on the south coast!

For those who think (myself included, prior my visit) that the Sierra Nevada is only skiing and snow, this mountain is a great surprise!
Various routes, all well marked and with fantastic views! There are several levels of courses, from the simplest to the hard requirements of high mountain!
Trevelez or Capileira work are a good camp base, above the 2500 m refuge Poqueira is a good option to stay.

Highly recommended! For initiation, training and summits!

The Alpujarras reaches from Lanjaron tot Ugijar (former "capital" of the Alpujarras). A variety of activities you can see and do :mountain walking along the GR7 from Granada tot Trevelez, or shorter from Pampineira tot Bubion and Capileira. Or just visit the last three white villages
which are a live with Morish influences. Orgiva has a tradition of the seventies.
By car you can take the northern route from Trevelez tot Ugijar, more adventerous or the southern altenative from Orgiva via Cadiar to Ugijar. Spectacular views.

This must be the friendliest place in Spain. Not only is the area breathtaking, but the people are so lovely. It is worth spending at least one night in the area and doing one of the walks available, besides for wandering around the villages. The fellow at the tourist office at Pampaneira is very knowledgable and helpful and will give you instructions and a basic map if you tell him your time constraints and wishes.

A "must see"!!! If you happen to pass nearby, or spend your summer holidays in the nearby resorts, be sure to spare one day and visit the Alpujarras! The best way is to hire a car, as the road is really picturesque and there are lots of places that will tempt you to stop and make some pictures or just enjoy the magnificent views: above you - the snow-tops of the Sierra Nevada mountain, below - the lush green fields, and somewhere in the middle - the beautiful white Andalusian villages, that resemble rice that has been spilled around the mountain slopes...
The villages are small and cozy, with snow-white walls and streets, and from time-to-time colorful carpets and rugs, made and sold by the locals...
The only thing you need for a one-day walk around the villages are comfortable shoes and a camera! Also, be advised that the last village is relatively high (1500 m above the sea level), and a warm sweater/umbrella may also be useful if you plan to visit them in spring/autumn.
In each village there is parking, restaurant/cafes, souvenir shops and supermarkets (of course mind the siesta) :)
Enjoy the views and the atmosphere!
