We stayed at this retreat for 3 nights ending 3 October 2012. All the 5* reviews are correct, we had a very relaxing time in this beautiful rustic hotel perched high on a mountain. Totally peaceful yet only 10 minutes from central Granada. Rooms are very comfortable and more than adequate. The owners are hands on and very professional. Go on try it and leave the city hotels alone, you won't regret it.

Room Tip: Room 11 or 12; 12 in preference.

This is a wonderful hotel and we had a perfect break. The welcome we received was lovely. The hotel is beautiful and peaceful in a wonderful location with the most stunning view of the mountains. It was also fantastic value for money. The food is excellent for both breakfast and dinner. Thoroughly recommended.

Room Tip: We had both a simple room and a superior room - go for the latter if you can - it's worth it.

We stayed there two nights at the very end of July and it was a great stay. La almunia del Valle is off Monachil (Granada). The road from Monachil to the hotel is a bit difficult (one lane, little space, etc.), but any car can get there.

The best thing of the place is the peace, views, nature, etc. around. You overview the mountains and relax. There is a swimming pool for clients to enjoy where everybody relaxes reading, listening to ipads, etc. There's no noise, only the rumour of water around (specially in the mornings).

The rooms are spacious and very well decorated, and they all overlook the montains, which gives you great views even from the bed. The bathroom is also big and they provide you with the widest array of amenities I've seen in any hotel. They care for any detail and you can feel it everywhere in the hotel.

Breakfast can be had inside the hotel or outside, in a very nice terrace. If the weather is good, go outside because it is too small inside and you can't have a quiet breakfast unless there are few clients around. The quality of the breakfast is good and the variety is a bit limited.

During breakfast, the owner offers the dinner menu for those who would like to join. The menu is always based on local fresh products and we had it once. The best thing is that you have dinner in such a romantic and relaxing place in front of the mountains, breathing fresh clean air! The food is well cooked and prepared in the Mediterranean way. Delicious food prepared by a good cook in that place... that's the perfect dinner for two. Specially with the sunset making everything just perfect!

The only bad thing about the hotel, in our case, was that we couldn't open the window much because of the insects outside. Whereas the windows on the ground floor had panels to keep the insects outside, the ones on the first floor don't. Apart from that, this B&B only provides a limited number of dishes (most of them cold dishes) at lunch time. If you would like to get food for lunch yourself, it is a good idea to buy it in Monachil in a supermarket and take it to the hotel, or go to Monachil for lunch, if you would like to have more options.

The owners are very welcoming, and they keep a wonderful atmosphere there. From the very beginning that I gave them a call to book the room they were so sweet and so helpful! they made me feel as an old friend from the beginning!

Room Tip: There are some rooms with balconies (ours didn't). However, some of them didn't look to private. If you would like a room with a balcony, you may want to ask which ones are not on the way to the swimming pool or next to the terrace where dinner is served.

We recently stayed for three nights at La Almunia del Valle near the beginning of a three-week trip to Spain. We selected it based on reviews on this site. Despite the uniformly excellent reviews, it exceeded our expectations in almost every way. After a long drive from Valencia we arrived at 8:30pm, just in time for dinner the first night and quite early by Spanish standards. We had reserved dinner only the first night with the thought that we might go out to nearby restaurants other evenings. Dinner began with an appetizer of bread, olive oil, tomato, and some Jamon. What followed was a tiny, but spectacular, serving of cold soup exploding with fresh vegetable flavors. The main dish included a whole small chicken that was falling-off-the-bone soft and wonderfully seasoned. There are only three wine choices at La Almunia: a white, a rosado, and a red. Because we knew we had to dine there all three nights after the experience of the first, we were able to enjoy a different wine choice each night. All were locally made wines and very good. Each night as we finished our meals we watched the beautiful moonrise over the Sierra Madre. We just happened to arrive one night before a full moon, so we saw a series of amazing moonrises!

We were so impressed with the cooking after our first meal that the owner invited my wife to observe the meal preparation on the following evening, which was much appreciated. I would describe the style of cooking as a combination of traditional Spanish cooking with modern continental cooking. Although the cooking is expert, La Almunia does not open its dining room (which is actually a patio overlooking a valley in the Sierra Madre) to the public. So, if you want to try the food, you must stay at the hotel.

The owners are a couple who left a more conventional life in the city 12 years ago to purchase this property and convert it into a hotel. They obviously love what they are doing, which shows in the way they maintain the property and in their gracious treatment of both guests and staff.

Other than eating great meals one of the main attractions for us was the quiet, out-of-the-way location. Granada is only 20 minutes away, but we chose not to leave the hotel property by car during our stay. The view from the area around the pool is great. There is decent internet connectivity in the public area of the hotel, but not in the guest rooms. We love to hike and it turns out that there is a lovely walk from the property along a small stream, across a series of suspension bridges, up to a summit from which you have fantastic views of the valley. I highly recommend this roughly two hour walk for anyone who is moderately physically fit.

Room Tip: Some rooms have private sitting areas; not necessary, but nice.

We had a great stay at La Almunia. The setting is beautiful, with a nice swimming pool overlooking the mountains. Breakfast is good. Staff is nice. Room was clean.

The only weak point is the internet connection that was weak and not available in the rooms.
