This looked a little like an Alpine hotel with geraniums flowing from window boxes. The rooms were very spacious (we could open both cases at the same time and probably a couple of others too) we also had an enormous terrace overlooking the valley. Breakfast was simple but good and the La Fragua restaurant next door was excellent. Getting the car to the hotel car park was challenging but if you have a small car and know exactly which direction you are heading, it is do-able (walk it first)!

When Travelling to Trevelez in Sierra Nevada, Spain, we wanted to get as high as possible on the mountain. This nice small hotel has large rooms and a nice / helpful staff. Eack room has a balcony towards the mountain. The early first sun spells over the ridge where photographic when hitting the balconies. Good advice is to ask for driving instructions if you go by car. Narrow streets lead to the court yard. Friendly local people assisted us.

Other reviewers have commented on the location of the hotel which is fabulous. Trevelez is a great mountain town and this hotel is about as high up as you can get. It is a traditional chalet style mountain hotel with fantastic views of the mountains. We had a very large terrace. In fact we had a very large room with a large bathroom. It is traditional mountain style which we like very much.

It is important to comment on the access issues. After a very stressful hour or so we did successfully get our hired Seat Ibiza into the hotel's parking area but it could have been much easier. We went to the wrong town square with the "other" church, and from there got involved with a narrow street which was completely impossible to negotiate, so we had to reverse and turn round. The hotel would do well to have a very clear map drawn and some clear instructions written and have them properly translated into the languages required and include them in the website and/or email to visitors. IF you take the correct route then there is not too far to negotiate on the very narrow streets, but you would not want a car much bigger than ours. It is quite stressful though as you drive along in fear of meeting a car coming the other way. Then, there needs to be a proper, clear sign at the point where you turn, as it is a very unpromising looking road, and there is only a very small sign directing you to the Barrio Alto. It is such a shame because the hotel is great in the main when you get there.

There is fantastic walking right from the hotel. We did a great all day walk called Siete Lagunas (though you only get to see one lake!) up to the top of the waterfall and the lake.

We went to the Fragua Restaurant both nights we were there. Absolutely fantastic. Classic, delicious mountain food, very good value, lovely service. No problems there.

We weren't at all keen on the breakfast set up. The food is laid out on the tables, including yogurts which I would prefer were being kept cold. Also fruit, which is unsuccessful as not everybody likes the same fruit. We much prefer a buffet style as found in almost every other hotel we have ever stayed at. Your coffee is brought to you, but you are not offered a top up, you have to ask. It was very slow service the first morning. You are then brought the toast, which you hear being prepared. Also they don't start serving until 8.30 which is pretty late if you want to get out walking.

However we do not want to put you off going to the hotel. It is mainly great - maybe this breakfast set up is popular with some of their guests.

You don't have a lot of choice of hotels in Trevelez........so it's fortunate La Fragua 2 is very good!

The stand out feature of this hotel is without question the exceptionally beautiful mountain views. Our room had a balcony, and it was a pleasure to look out at the mountain vista.

The bathroom and bedroom were very clean, and the overall ambience of the hotel was homely and comfortable. There is wifi available, but the access is spotty.

The reception staff were helpful and friendly, pointing out a nice nearby walk, and the breakfast staff were attentive, if the choice of the food was rather limited.

Although the hotel has parking, be aware it's actually quite hard to get to through the steep and narrow streets.

What a wonderfully situated hotel. Quietly located on the edge of the village but just a few minutes from several bars, shops and restaurants. The views from the balconies at the front of the hotel are breathtaking. The Hotel owners also have a restaurant very close to the hotel which is not to be missed, great food and excellent service.
We have stayed here several times and would recommend it.

Room Tip: Top floor for the very best views from the balcony.

With another couple, we booked for two nights in early September (55euros/room/night) . The booking was made direct via Internet and email. There were no snags on arrival. The rooms were spacious and clean and the en-suite was spotless. Both rooms had terraces overlooking the village and mountains. There appeared to be seven rooms on tthe upper floor, all with terraces and a small communal swimming pool at the side. Reception was always manned, at least every time we needed it. They were prepared to assist with any enquiries re excursions etc.

La Fragua II is some 150 metres from the Fragua restuarant and original hotel. We ate in the restuarant both nights. The food was good and service excellent. No smoking, but we just moved downstairs to the bar to enjoy a smoke with our coffee. The menu was typical of the area and a three course with wine averaged out at about 20 euros/person. The restuarant can get busy so worth reserving a table in earlier in the day.

We left our food and drinks bill running for the weekend but checked its accuracy midway through our stay. On the button, with no little mistakes.

Previous reviewers have commented on access by car. There is parking at the Fragua II, but the lane between the restuarant and the hotel is very narrow. However, our friends took their Land Rover up to the hotel as we did with our Fiesta. A competent driver can pass through with care but it is definitely recommended that you walk the track first and have a companion (or someone from the lower hotel) to position themselves at the far end of the track to ensure that no-one tries to leave the higher car park at the same time. Reversing is best avoided!

Should we wish to return we would have no hesitation in re-booking at the La Fragus II. The facilities and calm service certainly added to the enjoyment of our brief stay.

There's something about Andalucia's Alpuharran region that makes foreigners just want to settle in. Having read Gerald Brennan's and Chris Stewart's experiences I wanted a piece of the action, and the highest hotel in the highest village in Spain seemed like a good starting point. The resulting stay at La Fragua II was indeed a highlight. Maybe it was the mountain and valley view from our terrace, or the sound of the river lulling us to sleep. It might have been the wonderful fresh food prepared and served by a family who know how to provide low key Spanish hospitality. Perhaps it was the pool with the one of the best views I have ever had to swim in, or the excellent value for money that had me totting up just how long I could afford to stay if I did a Brennan and left the world behind me for a while. Whatever the reason, Trevelez (and La Fragua) was everything I had hoped for and more. On a practical note, concerns about access to the hotel are ridiculous unless you have a disability. People go to the Alpujarras to walk. Starting with a 300m walk from the carpark should not be a problem. If it is, you can ask the owner for a lift up or, if you're really brave, you can actually drive all the way with someone looking out for oncoming traffic. We did this on arrival but didn't bother on subsequent days because it really was very tricky. Do go to La Fragua if you are visiting this region. The only downside is that you really won't want to leave.
