Hotel Playa Cotobro
Ranked #15 of 25 Hotels in Almunecar
Reviewed 16 May 2013

We booked this hotel in medium May based on a brochure in Booking.com stating that the hotel had WiFi in all rooms and was airconditioned.

When we arrived we discovered that the WiFi only did work in the reception area and that the airconditioned only worked from 21. May! When we arrived May 8. it was 28 degrees outside!

We therefore had to sleep with the terrace door open towards the beach, and when the wind started to blow and the waves got very big, there was so much noise from the sea that sleeping was impossible with the terrace door open - and impossible to sleep with the terrace door closed due to the fact that there was no aircondition!

I therefore complained to the hotel and wanted a premature check out which the hotel refused. I therefore had to go through Booking.com who helped me out.

All trhis could have been avoided if those facts had been stated in the brochure; I would simply had booked another hotel.

Never more Hotel Playa Cotobro in Almunecar! Stay away!

Dear costumer,
We regret that you could not enjoy your holiday in our hotel. We take note what you told us about the air conditioning. We hope you visit us again at another time to enjoy the air conditioning as you like.

Just returned from nine fabulous days here. Accommodation is spacious with good sized bathroom. View from the balcony was superb. Staff are extremely helpful and friendly although its obvious they work long hours. Only down side was breakfast. Plenty to eat but the quality wasn't up to much. We started to take in our own fruit and yogurts so that was ok. Loved every minute of the holiday. Lots to do all around and if you like walking its ideal. Very flat with a seriously long promenade, lots of good quality restaurants in the town and none too expensive. If you like to tour but don't want to drive, the bus service is excellent. There's even a bus stops at the hotel door to take you into town if you don't want to walk. Felt like being away from everything but nothing is too far away. Loved it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the see.

All staff young and keen to make your stay as great as possible. They all seem really good friends too so the atmosphere is great, most speak good English or otherwise fetch a colleague. We were the only English family there so we really felt as though we were abroad. Chef came out to ask me (in good English) what a vegetarian would like to eat as there was little on the menu. Lovely fresh food. Hotel room with sea view that is breathtaking.Lovely bathroom, free safe, aircon, Opening curtains a pleasure every day. Small sand and pebble beach over the road with sunbeds and parasols. Kiosk nearby for cold drinks (very reasonable prices). Fantastic hotel, 20mins flat walk or 1 euro bus ride to town. We will return!

Room Tip: You MUST get a sea view!

The staff at this hotel were amazing, they tried to help us get to see the Alhambra, they were really really efficient! The hotel was modern and clean, just the drinks at the bar were very expensive. For a Coke and Two Beers it was around €10. The food could accommodate anybody. In the bathroom we could here the people above through the fan but it didn't bother us, we were pretty much the only English people there. We got the bus everyday to Almunecar as my mum can't walk very far, the heart of the town with the most atmosphere is the Old Town, once you work you're way around the town everything eventually Connnects up, the bus only costs €1 a journey per person which is a bargain but the times the buses run are limited and sometimes confusing. The taxis from the Old Town to this hotel cost about €7 during the day and between €8 or €9 in the evening. We will definatly be visiting this hotel again next year.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view!

The views are lovely from this neat and clean hotel though sadly we did not have a sea view from our room. Apart from that, the room was good; beds comfortable; plenty of space and good bathroom. The bar was great, very friendly service. The staff went out of their way to be helpful and pleasant. Food was fine, buffet style so you could choose what and how much you wanted. Appreciated the bus service into Almunecar town hourly for only 1 euro - we used it a lot. Very pleasant walk into town otherwise along the seafront or beach in parts. Comfortable and relaxing stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea room, they have balconies too, otherwise you are looking at the back wall

This hotel was very modern and as advertised. We had a junior suite with a sea view which was fantastic, the balcony was small but served the purpose. We could hear the sea from our room lapping against the beach The beach is black sand and gravel but you can still sunbath. The hotel is based in Cotobro. The nearest shopping center and restaurants were in Almunecar which was a nice walk from the hotel. There is a bus service for one euro right outside the hotel as-well. If you hire a car parking is fifteen euro a day at the hotel. There are no hot drinks facilities in the rooms - suggest you take a travel kettle.
Food was very good and the staff made sure it was always topped up. Staff were friendly but spoke very little English - we still managed to communicate. We were the only English couple in the hotel, mostly Spanish. There were only three sunbeds around the pool area as not much room and in the shade until later in the day. A quiet relaxing holiday if that what you looking for.

Room Tip: Request a room with a sea view - a junior suite

This hotel has only been open for a few months, and is definately the nicest looking place in the area. We prepaid through Expedia and were extremely disappointed to find the hotel had a full board special that was 2/3 the rate we paid that didn't include any meals. The young lady at the front desk would do nothing for us to adjust the rate. We felt she could have at least compted the meals for us. Meals were 18 Euro per person for a small buffet for lunch and dinner and 5 Euro per person for breakfast., although they tried to charge us 12 Euro each for breakfast. The other annoyances were the safe being locked already when we got to the room. The front desk clerk told us we had to wait over an hour until another person came on to help us. Most rooms have a balcony overlooking the water , but only the 1st and 4th floor have chairs! Since we were on the 3rd we had to beg for one chair and then used the room's desk chair. There is only one restaurant nearby that is extremely expensive. The Almunecar restaurants are about a 2km walk and are all pretty yucky and very crowded. Parking is 9 euro per day and there is very limited free parking, so expect to pay. The hotel has lounge chairs on the beach , but we were surprised to be charged 4 euros each per day for them! Internet is available at a 2 euro charge per hour. Hallways also smelled of cigarette smoke, and we were in a non smoking room.If there was a next time, I would stay in Nerja where there are nicer restaurants that are more accessible.
