Almunecar Playa Spa Hotel
Ranked #5 of 24 Hotels in Almunecar
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Having just arrived back from a eight night stay at this Senator playa hotel i thought i would review it as i have had to really think about my review before i started typing.
This was our first visit to Almunecar and our first stay in a Senator Playa Hotel .It was 2 adults and our 2 kids 7 and 11 yrs old. From Gibraltar it was a 2 and half hour drive to this small town in Costa Tropical. The hotel was found quite quickly as it is just next to the beach San Cristobal. We got to reception and checked in,also booking a parking space for our 9 day stay which was around £7 per day (75 euros).Even though i personally think Hotels should have free parking i really did not mind paying this fee as its an underground parking(no security)and you can come and go as you please. The car is always cool and protected from incidents that can happen in the street. The same card you get for your room will open the parking gate so you can drive in.The parking entrance is on the road parallel to the hotel.Would recommend everyone paying this fee as the other alternative is parking on the blue lines which have a fee which you pay at a parking meter.
Once checking in was over we headed to our room which was room 420 on the fourth floor. The hotel only has 2 lifts that lead from the -1 Spa/parking to the top floor 8.At first instance this looks like not enough for such a big hotel, but the lifts are the fastest i have ever been on(apart from the one i went on the now missing twin towers in New York). We never had to wait for more than 2 minutes for the lift to come.

Room:
Typical hotel room in spain for a family of 4.This one had 2 double beds one beside the other,a small old type tv,a mini fridge, small terrace and a bathroom with a bath sink toilet. We had 4 bath towels and 4 face towels each plus bath gel and shampoo. All of these items were changed or replaced daily.

Hotel:
After a quick round of the hotel i found the hotel up to a good standard although maybe needing a retouch as in some places it was looking worn out.
The hotel has three bars,a restaurant,a Spa(we never went)Gym,a medium sized hall area, mini golf(free for all) and paddle court.
The hotel has the reception entrance which is next to a big Mercadona Supermarket. It also has a rear exit that leads to the beach from the actual pool area.To check in you have to enter through front entrance as rear entrance requires your room key card.

Pool:
Smaller than we thought although what it looses in size(144 max)it gains in FUN for the kids,as it has 2 lovely water slides which my kids 7 and 11 used at least 1000 times each during our stay. The pool is in need of a facelift as it looks old and worn out. There is also a kids mini pool and a Jacuzzi only for adults with warm water just next to the water slides.
Beware of the serious middle-aged life guards as they do take their job seriously and do tell kids off for using the water slides incorrectly,or trying to get in the adult only jacuzzi.Still its their job.
Sunbeds are more than enough for everyone and at 10 am there are still plenty of them around(no need to get up early).Beach umbrellas more of the same, there is no need to rush to get one although around 12 you will be lucky to get either one.
Take into account that Almunecar does get windy and use of the beach umbrellas is not allowed if wind is very strong, these will be removed by lifeguard.
There is a pool bar from 12.30 which serves all kinds of drinks, free crisps, peanuts and ice cream tubs which are free for all inclusive guests.Slush puppies are great for warm days.

Staff:
Great service from all involved at this hotel. The entertainment staff Bea,Loli were great with our son,he loved them. The bar and all serving staff is also great.Arturo the bar man/Waiter was great and always talked to us about Gibraltar and showed great social skills.Well done to all at this hotel.

All Inclusive:
One of the best all inclusive drinks deals ever. Many branded drinks for all.Pepsi,Pascual,Beefeater,Martini,Cruzcampo.JB etc.Minimum supplement payment for other cocktails, whiskeys etc.Although we did not find the need to pay for any drinks.Drinks all day and night.

Food:
This is where this hotel looses at least 1.5 points for me(would have got near the 5 mark instead of 3 rating given).
The waiting time at breakfast for bacon and eggs was unacceptable. We are talking about three people waiting in front of me no more.By the time i got my eggs and waited for the bacon to be cooked the eggs were cold. The problem was not enough thought on production of the most popular items at breakfast.....BACON,EGGS AND SCRAMBLED EGGS..these should be ready on heated trays all the time and not cooked depending on the people queuing up.I have been to other hotels were these three items are cooked in the kitchen and then brought out on large trays which soon are empty as everyone gets these popular breakfast items. There was only one lady live cooking,EGGS,BACON,sausages and scrambled eggs and omelettes to order...ridiculous.Just have 30 pieces of each ready on display will soon disappear..sure none will be thrown away.
Mr Hotel manager please for my next visit try to have BAKED BEANS...bacon eggs without baked beans is just not the same..sure costs will be minimum and kids love them.PLEASE PLEASE.
Lovely selection of breads, salads, fruit, yogurts, different milks(soya, lactose free etc)
Tea cofee, juices etc for self service.

Lunch time was a very low point for us,we just could not find enough variety for our kids.No nuggets of fish fingers to be seen. The pizza was always overcooked which was also very hard to eat.The pasta was cold and was only slightly heated up when you poured the tomato sauce over it ...which was just about warmish.
We did not have such a problem to find something to eat..although the food was very repetitive and very badly labeled. It was like a guessing game. Many of the sauced cooked main plates were missing their labels...unacceptable,and it happened every day.We had to ask the cook there what the plates were.
Dinner more of the same. One day to our surprise they served lamb. The cook was carving the leg and the first cuts were great. After a while the lamb that was starting to be cut was all red and looked undercooked.Shame as it was a waste of good lamb.
There is a kebab rotating cooker there which is served and it was a change to see this at a hotel.Shame the cooks have no idea of cooking kebab and they always cut it too soon, leaving it as a blob of kebab on our plate. The days they served the chicken kebab it was more of the same...but slightly better as it was real chicken and the pieces were better cut although 3 mins more of cooking would have given a great cut.
There was fish every day Lubina was great.Tuna was dry but common in hotels.Did find that the other fish served did have too many fish bones and not something i would give to my kids.
Pork chops, lamb chops and beef was good cuts and were usually tender.
Still waiting time for these to be cooked was a bit long as only one person was live cooking this on their own, only helped at certain times.
There was a lady cooking pancakes to order which was nice for kids.Bothe lunch and dinner this lady saved our kids day as sometimes that is what they only ate as the other offerings were not to their liking.
Deserts are not plentiful but do the job.Not the biggest selection ever but there were enough fruits and cakes to go around.

All in all we do feel let down by not the quality of the food but the lack of organisation in the preparation especially at breakfast. It just took too long to get a plate of eggs and bacon. These items should be be cooking all the time and always on display.
Not having Baked beans was a low point for us,Our kids would have had these everyday. To be honest first time ever i have not seen baked beans next to eggs or bacon in a hotel.

Almunecar Playa hotel is one to visit. We will revisit as it does deserve a second and third chance. Not for its food but for its excellent staff that around the clock tend to your every need. For its great entertainment staff that keep kids and adults entertained all day, with games for all.For its great ALL INCLUSIVE drinks offer. For the lovely town of Almunecar which is a change to the cost del sol area, here its such a quiet and peaceful place...you do rest.
Best of all to come home with the same weight before we arrived to the hotel has been a plus for us.
We will return to this hotel ,probably next year.

Stayed at this hotel from 01/06 to 06/06/14 and found it good value for money. It is in a prime location opposite the beach and we gad a very good sea view from room 332. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. The rooms were clean but a bit dated. In need of an upgrade but would not be put off by this The food was plentiful both at breakfast and dinner and plenty to choose from. Almunecar is a beautiful unspoilt Spanish town on Costa Del Sol. Caters very much for the. Germans. This is the real Spain set in between the mountains. visited Granada for the day and it was lovely to see. Takes approx 1hr 20mins by bus , worth a visit

Room Tip: Sea view a must

Stayed here for 5 nights on a last minute break with my Mum. The room was large with a balcony facing the sea, there was a fridge and wine glasses provded, sizeable bathroom with shower over. The furniture was a little tired but everything was clean and comfortable. There are lots of amenities at the hotel - indoor and outdoor pool, small pool, play area and waterslides for the children. Crazy golf, tennis, shuffleboard, table tennis etc. The food was buffet style and
plentiful to suit all nationalities - we liked the traditional cava at breakfast :) Staff were pleasant and helpful.

We found the town and beach lovely to wander around but didn't venture further afield. There are some pleasant restaurants on the beach with free tapas.

A very enjoyable, chilled few days - but if you want action packed, I would suggest this is not the place for you!

Room Tip: If you want sunshine on your balcony for most of the afternoon ask for a room overlooking the pool...

We mainly chose this hotel for its price and facilities. On arrival we were given room 441 which was on the 4th floor facing the sea, being an end room our balcony was bigger than others. The bathroom although dated was large with a bath with overhead shower, sink with large mirror, hairydryer and toilet & bidet through arch. The benefit of being at the end was 2 windows, toilet one had views of the old town.

Bedroom was large with 2 very firm double beds, bedside tables, chairs and mirrored wardrobes with plenty of hangers and 2 blankets.
There was a fridge which was large enough to store water, fruit etc. The only gripe is no mirror over the dressing table, a must for the ladies! As mentioned by others tv channels were all in german/spanish.

The facilities were good, heated indoor swimming pool/jacuzzi until end of May, Gym and spa facilities at extra cost. Outside pool in May was freezing although jacuzzi was heated. Plenty of sunbeds and parasols so could freely move as sun went round. If like us you fly budget airlines and weight is an issue, towels can be hired for 10 euro for the week, refunded on return, Irons can also be borrowed from reception. One hour Wi-fi to use in reception area although for 20 euros unlimited wi-fi can be used throughout the hotel.

Pretty foyer with foliage tumbling from each floor, comfortable chairs/sofas, games room and pool table. Indoor bar area was nice and bar staff friendly. Reception staff friendly but their english not so good.

Dining room was spacious with plenty on offer for everyones taste. Breakfast offered "full english", the usual cereals, hams, cheese etc. Evening meal, again plenty to choose from, hot, cold, although could be repetitive if staying for 2 weeks.

Cleaners were always cheeful and changed towels/sheets regulary.

Vacating of room is 12 noon, however if they have the space you can extend this for 25 euros! Cases can be stored in a room at reception until departure.

Almunecar as a town was pretty with plenty of small shops, church etc, there is a market on Fridays and Sundays, be sure to get a map of the area from the tourist information kiosk as the hotel provided no information at all.

I would recommend this hotel. It was quiet mid May with mainly elderly Spanish/German visitors, not sure if we'd go in high season.

Room Tip: Choose and end room higher than 4th floor for the views.

10 day holiday booked with Fleetway travel. The hotel was clean and appealing. The rooms comfortable, spacious and clean to a high standard and kept regularly so.
The food offered lots of choice and was plentiful.
The staff were approachable and friendly and were always glad to help and offer advice
The pool area was maintained on a daily basis and throughout each day by the lifeguard on duty. There was plenty of scope for all ages, with a large pool, children's pool, water slide and two Jacuzzis along with loads of sunbeds.
An hour of free wifi access was available in the huge main reception area. The hotel is located right on the sea front with usual amenities but there is lots more to see in the main town of Almunecar. Very enjoyable holiday and would have no hesitation to return soon.

There are signs as you reach Almunecar pointing to various other hotels in the town, but not the Playa Spa - that might have been a clue. On entering the fascinating reception, passing flags which include the British one, I had high hopes, then I noticed a bicycle rack (complete with cycles) adjacent to the reception desk (?). Very few staff can speak English, even less understand it. Though it is true that most guests are/were Germans.
Using the lifts that are the centrepiece to room 301, our initial impression was reinforced, this hotel is a bit tired and needs a refurbishment. Unusually for a holiday hotel, there was no welcome water, fruit, wine - anything - and no information of any kind in the standard cardboard folder on the table. TV had many channels, but only "BBC World Service" - that we later discovered kept having signal problems - unacceptable these days. Internet access is limited (free) to reception area and only one hour a day. Meal times (half board) are 08-00 start, too late for those going on trips, and if you are, its a long way to everywhere and the local motorways seemed to be closed if you wanted to head anywhere but Malaga. The evening meal was even more ridiculous, not commencing until 7-30. Far too late for me ! Though, as a vegetarian, I was quite content with the choice, my partner thought the food was poor.
Our room only got direct sun after 5-00pm, they do tell you that "For very little more you can enjoy the best rooms - we show them to you without obligation" - so even management are aware how poor their rooms are. 'Our' cleaner arrived every day, changed the towels and 'dolly mopped' the floor and balcony. However, if you picked up the hair dryer, it was greasy and covered in previous users hair, the corners of the room and bathroom were very dirty. Though, lots of very hot water for a shower or bath at anytime. There were three bulbs that required replacing in the room and the WC flush jammed so that it could run constantly - it was very wearing trying to explain this to reception staff. (though things were fixed) On one day, the towels were removed, but no bath towels left. It took a visit and three phone calls over 6 hours to rectify this !
I actually felt that apart from being very far away from everywhere (I drove 1000 miles in a week) the hotel was good value for money - Liz hated it !!

A lovely holiday to Almunecar and surrounding areas.
Almunecar was lovely, unpretentious and quiet out of season. Reasonable prices, plenty of supermarkets, lovely long promenade, safe, clean and tidy. Shingle beaches with WC facilities and exercise equipment. With a hire car it is a good base for travel to Granada (Alhambra)and Seville (3hrs) with great motorways and a-roads.
Hotel Playa Spa was fabulous! Highly recommended.
The staff were welcoming and helpful at all times. Our room was as requested (a view) large, (2 queen sized beds) large wardrobe, tv, comfortable with a small fridge and air conditioning at no extra cost. Large bathroom, (a bit dated), with bidet. Good views over the pool and coast. Good soundproofing. Shame no tea and coffee making facilities.
Good-size indoor pool and jacuzzi. Lovely outdoor pool with slide and heated jacuzzi.
Breakfast and Dinner Buffet ; this was fabulous due to the variety, with freshly cooked omlettes, meat and fish while you wait.
Wi Fi free for 1 hour in the lobby was quite slow, there are many cafes/bars nearby with wi fi.

Room Tip: The higher the better with a sea view.
