“Away from the Hustle and Bustle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2014

Almunecar has a three kilometre sea front. Hotel Bahia Tropical is set at the very eastern end of this. The area is therefore much quieter than the centre of the town. The building itself is fairly impressive and in reasonable condition. The lobby gives a good and positive impression on entrance. The rooms are large enough with a seating area, balcony, two good sized beds and a fair sized bathroom with an over the bath shower. The set up is straight forward, buffet restaurants and bars near the pool area off to the left of reception as you enter the hotel. Rooms, not to have, unless you enjoy being overlooked and have little peace and quiet are the ground floor accommodations, which are in fact on planta/level 1, the same level as reception. These, especially on the eastern and northern sides are right at the swimming pool level. Handy for children to get to and from the pool area as they have small overlooked patios. Air conditioning works fine.

Reception staff are by and large ok, the room attendants always helpful, one exception is a Gabriela Parody, who is efficient, courteous, helpful and smiley. You start with a question and end with a smile, which is great.

Food is fine , not outstanding but fine. It is a standard buffet set up, with plenty of choices, salad options were always very good. There were a lot of different nationalities, who all seemed content. They did run out of forks when it was busy, so hang on to your cutlery.

The pool is great, a large shallower area for competent bathers a nice deep end and a paddling pool set aside for toddlers. There are plenty of loungers to be had. You do need your own towel. Buy one for 8 euros at the local mini market 8 minutes to the right of front doors. When busy the natural effect of hard surfaces and enclosed buildings can create a noisy feeling however all was quiet by the end of dinner service.

The in house price for drinks was I thought on the high side, not excessive but on the high side, in fairness not too much more than the local café/bar/restaurants.

If you go half board you can swop between having lunch or dinner, dinner being the default setting. Any more than two meals a day in this hotel is unnecessary, unless you are training for a marathon and need the extra carbohydrates. To be fair I did not see more than one or two guests who could do a hundred metres without pausing.

The local beach 30 metres away, is shingle and coarse sand (like most of the beaches around here) At least it doesn't blow everywhere, and stick to your body.

There is a problem in the lounge/dance bar. A distinctive aroma of damp rags, I did point this out and would hope it is resolved quickly.

Parking is free around the hotel until July 1st, after that it is max 6 hrs during the day, the hotel has parking at 9 euros per night.

Room Tip: quieter rooms will be on the west side, the pool is on level one, Eastern side even numbers overlook...

Went from Blackpool with Preferred Travel Services to this very accommodating hotel. Excellent reception from the moment my wife and I walked through the door. Nothing is ever perfect wherever one goes. The spacious, comfortable well cleaned room, over looking the pool, included everything we expected. The maids, bar staff and dining room staff all very sociable and smart. The food was typical Spanish hotel fare. Good selection of dishes, very tasty soups, good choice of salads, more or less something for everyone. Drink prices very reasonable. Hotel situated at one end of the promenade into Almunecar which was a very pleasant stroll with numerous watering holes if required. Bus service from outside the hotel,1 euro, but still operating a winter service. Had to plan your journey if using. Good trips included by Preferred Travel.

Room Tip: Negotiate with your travel provider or direct with the hotel before departure. It appears from other...

Just spent a week at this hotel. Staff excellent. Room very comfortable. Had requested walk in shower due to back problem. Had a good safety rail but still difficult to shower without flooding the entire floor.! Nice terrace overlooking pool. Beds hard but like them that way. Good, silent air conditioning. Food very good ,huge selection. Entertainment most nights in bar. Weather gorgeous and not too hot. Quiet area. Three nice beach bars with delicious food/ snacks at very reasonable prices. Local bus a euro into Almunecar, taxi 7 euro. Mainly middle aged guests. Takes about 40 minutes to walk into Almunecar. Beach grainy , probably why area not destroyed by mass tourism. Would need a car to visit surrounding area. We were on an organised trip so not necessary. Perfect for a relaxing week in May.

Room Tip: One facing the pool

Nice location - best with a car - last bus at 8 pm this time of year. Taxi only 8 euros to town centre. You can walk there but it's a fair distance. Pleasant and helpful staff at desk. Room was big and comfortable however there was no soap in shower dispenser and we had to request the shower be repaired as it swiveled round and sprayed the whole bathroom! The hotel was quiet so no excuse for lack of adequate room preparation. Otherwise O.K. Good choice at breakfast and very good coffee. Enjoyed the spa.

Large clean room with balcony to watch the sunrise from.
A short 3km enjoyable coastal walk to the nearby town of Almunecar or get the bus for 1 Euro!!!!

Thanks again to the hotel management for providing the bottle of sparkly to go with my Birthday Cake!!!
Didn't use the spa because I didn't want to miss the sunshine!!!!!!

Room Tip: If you want sunshine in the morning go for a room facing the beach. If you want afternoon or evening...

We stayed here at the start of November 2013, very nice room very clean, we were on the side overlooking the park. We had a balcony no sun on this side but lovely sunrises before the sun moved round for the day.The whole area was very quiet, nothing much open around the hotel. Ideal for the bus into Almunecar as the stop was right outside the hotel. A good bus service. The hotel staff were all lovely, very friendly and helpful. The food was plentiful but we felt it could have been more Spanish. Not the place to go for a beach holiday, the hotel was right on the beach which was grey grit ! They may have 19 beaches in the area, but none were good.

Friendly, clean and welcoming hotel. We really enjoyed our stay. Lovely big rooms, suitable for a family, Air conditioning is very quiet, however soundproofing between rooms could be improved. The buffet was good, lots to choose from, but lacking in typical Spanish food, shame.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool.
