Almunecar has a three kilometre sea front. Hotel Bahia Tropical is set at the very eastern end of this. The area is therefore much quieter than the centre of the town. The building itself is fairly impressive and in reasonable condition. The lobby gives a good and positive impression on entrance. The rooms are large enough with a seating area, balcony, two good sized beds and a fair sized bathroom with an over the bath shower. The set up is straight forward, buffet restaurants and bars near the pool area off to the left of reception as you enter the hotel. Rooms, not to have, unless you enjoy being overlooked and have little peace and quiet are the ground floor accommodations, which are in fact on planta/level 1, the same level as reception. These, especially on the eastern and northern sides are right at the swimming pool level. Handy for children to get to and from the pool area as they have small overlooked patios. Air conditioning works fine.
Reception staff are by and large ok, the room attendants always helpful, one exception is a Gabriela Parody, who is efficient, courteous, helpful and smiley. You start with a question and end with a smile, which is great.
Food is fine , not outstanding but fine. It is a standard buffet set up, with plenty of choices, salad options were always very good. There were a lot of different nationalities, who all seemed content. They did run out of forks when it was busy, so hang on to your cutlery.
The pool is great, a large shallower area for competent bathers a nice deep end and a paddling pool set aside for toddlers. There are plenty of loungers to be had. You do need your own towel. Buy one for 8 euros at the local mini market 8 minutes to the right of front doors. When busy the natural effect of hard surfaces and enclosed buildings can create a noisy feeling however all was quiet by the end of dinner service.
The in house price for drinks was I thought on the high side, not excessive but on the high side, in fairness not too much more than the local café/bar/restaurants.
If you go half board you can swop between having lunch or dinner, dinner being the default setting. Any more than two meals a day in this hotel is unnecessary, unless you are training for a marathon and need the extra carbohydrates. To be fair I did not see more than one or two guests who could do a hundred metres without pausing.
The local beach 30 metres away, is shingle and coarse sand (like most of the beaches around here) At least it doesn't blow everywhere, and stick to your body.
There is a problem in the lounge/dance bar. A distinctive aroma of damp rags, I did point this out and would hope it is resolved quickly.
Parking is free around the hotel until July 1st, after that it is max 6 hrs during the day, the hotel has parking at 9 euros per night.
