We stayed here in early March on a Saga holiday. We had been a bit sceptical about staying in a large hotel, but we very much enjoyed our stay. The rooms were large and airy. The balconies have been staggered in such a way that almost every room has a seaview. The food was good - buffet style - and there was always a huge selection of fresh salads in addition to different hot dishes. There was some overload first thing in the morning and when tour groups arrived with luggage, but we always found a way round it. Good tip: don't go to breakfast until lafter 9.30 a.m! On several evenings there was live music in the bar which was a great opportunity to dance and to mingle with other guests (mostly Spanish and Scandinavians). We hadn't visited Almunecar before and were delighted with the characterful old town, with winding streets, little boutiques and cafes, and the imposing fortress. We also loved the level walk along the esplanade with lovely scenery in both directions. We would have wished for slightly better weather during our stay, but at least the rain was warm and when the sun did come out it was hot enough to sit outside. We would highly recommend this hotel and hope to return in the future.

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views, but a room on a lower floor means less steps to walk up when the li...

The Helios hotel is idealy placed on the promonade which is kept very clean and is pleasing to the eye.Reception staff were friendly and approachable. We paid an extra 10 euros for a sea view room and we both agreed that it was well worth the extra. The bed was the most comfortable we have ever slept in. The bathroom is modern. The hotel is clean. There is an entertainments room, we enjoyed listening and dancing to live music. The large dining room is in the basement .There are no windows, there are pleasant pictures of the surrounding area. The waiting staff were efficient, table linen and the general appearance of the room was clean and modern. The food was acceptable for a 3 star rating. Its not the sort of restaraunt to go to for a romantic meal.Bar prices were not extortionate and there is a very nice terrace with views to the sea. The only critisism we have is that there is a notice as you enter the bar about happy hour, when drinks are two for the price of one. We sat and studied the drinks menu and we chose two cocktails,We ordered our drinks and was told that cocktails are not available during happy hour. So we were not happy at all.I spoke to the gentleman in reception and he appologised and said that he had mentiond previously to his boss that the notice should state that coctails are not included, but nothing had been done. He assured me that now he has recieved a complaint from a guest his boss will correct the situation. We liked Almunecar and we will return to the Helios in the future.

Room Tip: pay the extra for a sea view room on the 7th floor.

Have spent 4 weeks here recently with Saga and found it a very good choice. The hotel is very well sited on the sea front and the long promenade makes taking a stroll easy. The staff in reception and restaurant were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and varied. There was something to please every palate. It is a hotel patronized by many nationalities which makes it more interesting. As usual there are whingers on Saga holidays who only want to pay 3-star prices but expect 5-star but fortunately they are few and far between.
Almunecar is a nice little town and well placed for visiting interesting places in the area. Would recommend this hotel to individuals as well as group travellers.

Room Tip: All rooms have sea views, Depends whether you want morning or evening sun.

Stayed in February for a total of 85 eur for dinner and breakfast. The welcome was very professional and the room was excellent, very clean and modern, although there was a strange smell in the bathroom. The balcony was larger than the room, very private and equipped with sun loungers and table and chairs. When we stayed it appeared the hotel was geared up for coach holidays and there was a problem fitting us in during dinner, plus the dinner did appear to be cafeteria style. This was our only disappointment and would go back to the hotel but eat dinner outside.

Overlooking the lovely promenade, and then the beach and the sea, this hotel is in an excellent position. The views across the bay from the two rooms we've occupied - 605 and 609 -are impressive. It's also well placed for a large number of restaurants and tapas bars. Reception is always helpful and courteous - we asked for extra pillows and they were there within minutes. The bar area is light, spacious, and warm as it faces the sun across the bay. Despite being January the pool was partially covered and open for swimming every day. It was easy to find a sheltered spot from the cool wind and enjoy a seat - or a bed - in the sun. The roof terrace is also worth a visit - if only for the views. Restaurant is downstairs and serves a range of food. It's nothing to get excited about , but it's value for money. The evening grilled fish was always good. Bedrooms are spacious, have balconies, bath/shower, WC, towels regularly changed. We suggested softer pillows, and a plug socket nearer the dressing table so the hair dryer can reach! A choice of air con or heating. Blankets also provided. Local restaurants and tapas bars abound. We liked La China ( a bit of a walk, but worth it), Petete, Cortillijo, Mar de Plata, La Orilla, La Cabana, Lute y Jesus, all of which provide good free tapas with the alcoholic drink. Walking further afield into the squares in the town will open up the choice even more. Bar el Penon opposite the headland is also worth a visit - good coffee and large glasses of wine, live music some evenings. This is a very Spanish resort with little sign of the usual Package Tour treats. Menus in Spanish, Spanish style food, very little John Smiths Extra Smooth. However to compensate for that you can visit Mercadona Supermarket and get good Rioja for less than 2 euros a bottle! This is not a five star hotel, but it's a very good three star. It's our second visit and we believe it represents really good value for money. Room on the front with full sea view recommended.

Room Tip: Third floor upwards with sea view.

Stayed in low season, for a total of 55 EUR incl buffet breakfast for two. Overall a good experience, nice check-in personell, good size room with a seaview, close to beach. Only issue; toilet smelled really bad at arrival, rust in the shower, but for the price paid, very good!!

The British weather was really getting to me so out of the blue I found a week in dec with Saga. My first. It was a huge success. An easy journey. A welcome drink on arrival. Luggage outside my room within 30 min.
The hotel had a quiet restrained air about it. Just what I needed, lovely double room all to myself, okay the bed was a little hard. But have suffered far worse. sea view with the sound of the sea brushing the pebble beach aside. This was December and the weather kind. Blue skies. 20 plus temp. Only about 18 of us so a smaller dining room was used. Very sociable. Food adequate. And fresh. No complaints there. Staff were as friendly as was necessary. Efficient. And did not feel rushed. Jamie the rep was efficient. But loved to talk about his varied love life. 3 nationalities involved. We did try to get to a Argentina Tango show in the next village through Jaime. He did his best. But the Taxi did not turn up despite help from reception until 30min after show started. And it was 15 min ride away. So sorry to have missed that, went on couple of tours good value and interesting. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Met some lovely people who are regular Saga fans. All in all the Hotel Helios gets no complaints from me. Here to my next visit.

Room Tip: The higher rooms give great views.
