We were fortunate to have a Groupon deal to stay here so that meant we could visit somewhere we otherwise wouldn't afford!
Everything is as the website indicates- including wonderful established gardens of this 19th century house originally of sugar-cane factory owner.Entry to the grounds was by elegant gates but these could do with an automated mechanism! Present management told us its family history and explained the display of photographs in the ground floor stairwell. Within minutes I felt I belonged there, such was the casual comfort afforded to guests- rooms to read in, lounge, browse magazines etc. Everything that's been preserved or restored is fabulous, though the furniture collection does have the feeling of being a 'job-lot' from an auction but that's interesting in itself being antiquated and authentic! Therein lies the sense of uniqueness of the place.... from the quirky pattern of breakfast being served first in the designated room then next morning in the garden- in the shade, without thought of it being cold- to the utterly docile 'bear-sized' cream dog gracing the dining room, its colour entirely complementing the decor! In warmer temps this place will be totally magical, providing tranquil ambience, pool, gardens and if required apparently dinner - with notice. A menu with prices was in the room but we suspected would have had the feeling described elsewhere of beinga lone experience and feeling of being in someone else’s house. Nothing was too much trouble if we asked..... e.g. milk for tea in the room and coffee which wasn’t provided in the room- however although we were given a coffee machine the maid had already made some next morning and willingly offered it. The Casa is minimal distance from Salobrena and Motril and can be seen from the main road elegantly adorning its elevated position amongst the trees so offers a haven from everyday bustle whilst being accessible to these very different conurbations with their range of facilities and attractions. We enjoyed the antiquity of Salobrena and modernity of Motril equally, including a concert in the Motril theatre with its original design and seating and where carnations were handed out to the ladies. Magical visit all round.

Room Tip: All good- some at different sides of the house so vary in lightness/time of year; all air-con'd.

Casa de los Bates is a magical place. Only a short drive to the beach and the beautiful town of Salobreña. Romantic tropical gardens with exotic flowers and fruits. Great mediterranean views from both the terrace and the rooms. Its the perfect place for a romantic or tranquil getaway.

We stayed at the Casa de los Bates for one night on our way from Malaga airport to Granada. Our experience with the Casa de los Bates was mixed (and remarkably similar to the ones expressed in some of the reviews below). While the premises were beautiful, the room was fine (though a bit dark, we stayed on the ground floor), and the breakfast lovely, the place had more of the feel of a bed & breakfast / private home, which made us feel as if we were intruding upon the private life of the owners.

We felt rather cheated with the prices we were charged for a snack. We arrived late and asked whether it would be possible to get a snack. This was offered without a pricelist, and we found out the day after that they we were supposed to pay over 60 Euros for some cheese, ham, filled eggs, and a few beers, which is outrageous. Judging from the reviews below, it seems that Casa de los Bates has a problem here. We certainly won't come back!

We had booked 2 nights at this hotel as the final 'luxurious' leg of our visit to Andalucia. Our arrival was a little disappointing. The Casa is set in beautiful grounds though these are relatively close to a noisy main road, and the views somewhat spoilt by the sprawl of nearby Motril.

The house is beautiful and a shrine to a grand and proud family history. There was no clear enterance or reception or anything to identify it as a hotel and the lack of any other guests made it feel far more like a stunning bed & breakfast rather than a hotel. We paid 185 euros for a junior suite which was very pleasant and the breakfast was excellent.

As has been commented elsewhere, the prices for food and drinks were not provided or itemised - we were charged 50 euros for small plates of ham, cheese, a salad and 3 bottles of beer which seemed very expensive.

The surrounding area of Motril had very little appeal and offered little escape.

Overall, this hotel was not right for us, being far too quiet (we were the only guests mid-week) and we felt awkward as if visiting someone else's home. We reduced our stay to a single night and returned to Granada for a more lively last evening. Perhaps the hotel was more suited to a larger party.

The house and gardens are beautiful. Breakfast on the terrace overlooking the garden is very pleasant. The owners are warm and friendly, and very helpful.

Some things you should know: It can be quite noisy due to the traffic on the busy main road (a few hundred meters away), and the crow banger began at 7.25 each morning and went off throughout the day. There are 3 dogs around the house and gardens, one of which is very large and usually lies on the hall floor requiring you to step around him. There is no pricelist for the mini-bar or for any of the dishes you order throughout your stay. When we were leaving we didn't receive an itemised bill, just one overall price for these extras which was astonishingly high. When I emailed the owner a week or so later requesting an itemised bill he said they don't keep records so could not provide one, but he gave examples of prices e.g. 25 euro per "racion" of ham (which is extraordinarily high especially by Spanish prices).

This was by far the lodging highlight of our trip to Spain. The dwelling is a spectacular 115-year-old family-owned mansion that carries itself with an easy grace and seemingly effortless charm. The structure is hemmed in by a gigantic, beautifully manicured garden and is planted on top of a hill overlooking the Med.

The staff and proprietors are warm and kind, bending over backwards to accomodate guests' needs. Their sunny disposition is reflected in throughout the entire house, which is airy and illuminated by natural light.

Foodwise, the breakfast was the best we had in Spain. Very simple, but excellent quality breads and fruits.

Leaving the Casa was painful, like leaving home for the first time. While not cheap, I would still say it was a bargain at 130 euros for the quality of stay and service.
