We already adore Asturias, so we were looking at this area in particular. We liked the level of service advertised and the package looked very good. From the start everything went very well. Fidel was helpful with pre booking questions, very professional about payment options. On arrival we were welcomed and shown our property. The accommodation is a converted sawmill (I believe) which is behind a beautiful house. The house has been turned into five holiday lets, while the sawmill has been turned into two units, which is where we stayed. They are called lofts, but I would call them cottages. The restoration has been done beautifully. A tasteful blend of old and new, providing modern comforts and style in a way which complements the traditional rustic setting. It was luxurious for two of us - there is an open plan ground floor and a loft level mezzanine style bedroom with a bathroom. The two stylish sofas are sofabeds, so I guess four could stay there quite comfortably. The bed and linens are very good quality. We slept well thoughtout our stay!
The complex is heated with a geothermal system, backed up by a wood stove in the open plan ground floor of our unit. For some reason on our first night the heating wasn't working too well, but the staff available dealt with this very quickly and we were snug and had plenty of hot water throughout the rest of the stay. The only slight problem is the heating relies on a blower which might prove noisy if the weather was very cold. We were there in April - check Asturian weather for yourself if you don't know the region - and we were very comfortable putting the blowers off at night.
The village of San Martin de Luiña is rural Asturias at its best. A couple of bars, a simple restaurant, a weekly market, a church in the centre. There's even a one-pump filling station (reasonably priced - but only diesel!) A couple of kilometres up the road in Soto de Luiña is a supermarket, post office, more restaurants and bars, and other shops for your needs. In the summer I guess it must get quite busy. There are other hotels, holiday lets and camp sites around. All this clusters around the charming Cudillero, a small coastal town with a fishing port, beaches and everything you need.
The staff on site (Yolanda and Susana) need a special mention. Although they don't speak much English we were able to communicate. They want to help with everything they can, and always with a smile. They provide full housekeeping service, making this deluxe self-catering! Whether you are looking for a high season family break, or an off peak quiet getaway, Casona La Sierra has it all!
Liked best:
The service from Yolanda and Susana, the setting,
Liked least:
Concern about the heating, but only if the weather is very cold. THIS IS A MINOR PROBLEM FROM OUR EXPERIENCE
