“OK - Just”
Reviewed 1 November 2013

These huts are just about ok. They need a refurb. In ours the shower kept dripping & as the curtain did not reach the basin the floor got wet. Tiles were cracked & I suspect the wooden floor was rotten in places. No TV but that didn’t bother us. Eating is at the ‘fine dining’ restaurant or café style in the tourist shop.
Unless you wanted the convenience of being here early in the morning for trail walking I would not stay here again. If you do stay here make sure you have a torch as the pathway light at night (to & from the restaurant) is inadequate. It can be a bit of a walk so if you are susceptible to altitude sickness walk slowly!
We were lucky enough to have a hut on he end as the walls are thin. No bath and the shower is small. WiFi just about exists.

Room Tip: Get a hut on the end and as near to the restaurant as possible.

As the name implies, this lodge in the highlands of Mesa Verde National Park has a grand view in the distance. Lodge headquarters are functional, with a good panaramic view from the restaurant, far into the distant landscape of the Four Corners area. The rooms, themselves, are in unattractive, 1950's motel style, units. The units seem to be clean and well maintained, which is a credit to Xanterra, the facility manager, but there is nothing charming about them. They are functional and convenient. Otherwise the nearest lodging to the central part of the park is located in either Cortez or Mancos, over 30 miles distance, which is a rather long commute for a multi-day visit. I must also take exception the the unmasked lighting on the lodge grounds. One of the great glories of the desert Southwest is the night sky, which is shamefully obscured by unnecessary, unprotedted outdoor lighting.

Dinner at the lodge was fine, but not particularly exceptional. The whole package was rather costly.

Room Tip: It appears the rooms are all basically the same, with a panaramic view to the East.

There are no lodgings close to the park, so it's really worth it to stay here. Similar to other national park lodgings, it's a bit expensive and a bit primitive, but charming. The room and bathroom were extremely small but pleasant with nice decor and a small deck. Large mini fridge. The wifi didn't work and the staff were not concerned or helpful about it ("yea, we've had that problem since we opened.") We used the wifi at the cafeteria up the road and that was fine. Not perfect, but we would definitely recommend it for seeing the wonderful park. You shouldn't be in your room much anyway.

The Far View Lodge is the only lodging choice in the Park if you aren't camping. Staying there saves about 2 hours each day vs staying in Cortez. As park lodging goes the price was reasonable with the prepaid discount. The room is nice but basic. No A/C, No TV, No Cell Service. They did have reasonably good Wifi. The bed was comfortable. The shower/ toilet were separated in a rather tight space. The sink/vanity area was nice sized as was the room itself.

The best thing about Far View other than the location is the balcony. It overlooks the mesa and the valley beyond. A small table and chairs inside the window serves as a viewing area when weather makes the balcony unusable. The balcony provides a nice escape from the warm stuffy room.

The rooms can be quite warm and stuffy in warm weather. There is no window or ventilation opening on the back side of the room, so even opening the windows and door to the balcony provide no ventilation unless you are willing to open the door to the parking lot. For reasons that aren't clear the vent opening above this door has been blocked in leaving the rooms quite warm and stuffy in warm weather, I can't imagine what they are like in hot weather. The provided oscillating fan does little to help. The rooms are not air conditioned.

I found the Lounge above the dining room to be a good, less crowded place for dinner. The nearby cafeteria proved to be a better choice for breakfast and lunch. Comparable quality, better price.

If you are looking for night life, this is NOT the place. Other than sitting on the balcony and diner there are really no options. Early to bed seems the overall choice.

I booked an option where I prepaid when I booked saving about 20% The only downside is there is no refund if you cancel.

To be fair, there are certainly advantages to staying overnight at Far View Lodge -- there are, as advertised, far views and a considerable saving of time for exploring Mesa Verde, compared to staying at the base of the mountain in Cortez. And the Lodge's dinners were excellent (though the breakfasts rather less so). The real disadvantage to staying overnight at Far View Lodge is the accommodation. Frankly, the rooms were a disappointment. Amidst the most spectacular views of mountains, mesas and valleys, one might have hoped for something equivalent in the accommodations. They were not. They cry out for a make-over and up-grade, for redemption from spending the rest of eternity as a 1950s-style motel with exhausted plumbing and windows that rattle in the wind.

About the only good thing I can say about this hotel is that the room was clean and the bed was comfortable. We were part of a large group staying at Far View in Sept, 2013. It probably didn't help the ambiance that we arrived in a driving rainstorm with temps 15 - 20 degrees below normal. Our accommodations were in the cabin-like clusters of room above the lodge. The cabins were very rustic and had no foundation but rather they sat up on pilings. Phones didn't work so you couldn't call for help if there was a problem. And there were problems discovered by our co-travelers. Some of the 1950's style wall heaters didn't work and some of the rooms had enough space under the door that rainwater was being driven into the room by the wind. Personally, our heater worked and we didn't have water coming in but I could see daylight around the balcony door and frame. Wouldn't want to stay there in the winter - brrrrr! I must say the food at the lodge was excellent and we enjoyed dinner and breakfast there - with a wonderful view. With this place, it's all about location inside the national park. It's your only choice if you want to be close but it shows what happens to quality when the government has the monopoly.

This was the only accommodations in the Mesa Verde National Park. So unless you want to make a 30 miles trip one way into the park everyday you will needs to stay here. The room was pleasant and bed was comfortable but was very basic. No Internet, No phone, No TV! Restaurant in the main lodge was very good.
