To be able to be surrounded by tributes to such great authors in a serene setting without crowds of others intruding in your personal space was just awesome! The maps of the cemetary were helpful in finding particular graves of interest. Author's Ridge is really mind boggling! To think that Emerson, Thoreau, Alcott, and Hawthorne are resting there together is so significant. My daughter, who loves literature and writing was ready to move to Concord so she could just go sit there every day. My grandaughter was less impressed with the "who" and more entertained by the different types of graves -statues that she saw.

This is the cemetery where the Alcotts, Emerson, Thoreau, and Hawthorne are buried. It is just a lovely park with many touching tributes throughout. Be sure to take a map of the cemetery so that you can find the various tombs of civil war and other historic persons.

A cemetery still in use, but the best part is Authors' Ridge, resting place of Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne and Alcott family. In use since the early 19th century, there are also graves of other families prominent in Concord history. Monument and marker styles also reflect history.

We wanted to see the cemetery, so we drove over. It was fine since we were close, but for me personally, I wouldn't have wanted to drive too far out of the way. Author's ridge is cool, but it's about a 5 - 10 minute stop.

It may sound strange, but hubby and I are cemetery buffs - give us a good cemetery and we'll wander about for hours. Sleepy Hollow is one of the most enjoyable. Make sure to visit Author's Bluff and just give yourself time to wander around. It's shaded and makes for a very nice walk.
