“Begin the Begur Magic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 September 2010

Aigua Clara was the perfect complement to our surprise stay in Begur - one of the most pictureque and classy places on the Costa Brava. The township has retained its quaint Spanish heritage, there's a a good diversity of quality restaurants, cafes and summer holiday boutiques, a spectacular coastline, hidden beach coves and loads of historic sites nearby to visit on those cloudy days.

This hotel adds to the magic with its shabby chic decor and laid back old world mood. Our hosts Joan and Clara made us feel like old friends within a day. They are very contemporary young Spaniards with experience and flair and in hospitality. Breakfast downstairs with the other guests was presented in a sun filled dining room with an excellent variety of European fare, fresh cappucinos and orange juice, today's newspapers and some very cool music that creates their signature mood.

Our sunny airy top floor room (you have to be in at least average shape to handle the climb) was well worth it for the the views in both directions - to the coast from the bathroom and to the town centre from the bedroom.

A small downside was that the dinner we had there one night did not quite live up to expectation and bit on the pricey side for the quality, although we do realise it was a very busy night. The atmosphere and friendly service did make up for any shortcomings.

Aigua Clara is a welcome relief from the bland accommodation style overtaking too many tourist deestinations around the world. If you value originality, aesthetics and a bohemian home by the beach foer you stay, you will be delighted with Aigua Clara.

Happy, wonderful experience for all seven of us including 4 kids aged 8 -15! What could be better than that?

The location, food, decor, good cheer, amazing weather was only outdone by the warm, generous and happy proprietors. The reality exceeded our expectations at every turn.

Our young children crossed the small street and walked to town to shop, eat and explore everyday. We adults took early morning strolls through the village and witnessed the town waking up, frequented a local market for fresh luncheon supplies and explored several local beaches.

Clara and her husband are the heartbeat and soul of this lovely boutique hotel - loved by the locals and adored by the guests, truly. One great bonus was our introduction to the local antique dealers - a real treasure.

Delightful!

Some times in our travels there is some unexpected magical places and people that completely transform your holiday experience- Joan and Clara and Aiguaclara offer that piece of memorable magic.

The personalized service began even before arrival when Joan provided detailed information on public transport from Barcelona to Begur and coordinated car hire, maps and a recommended itinerary so we could immediately begin exploring the Costa Brava on arrival.

The hotel is delightful and it’s like stepping back in time. Travel clocks and luggage are a theme that run throughout the rambling 19th century mansion. Details such as quality bed linen, gorgeous cushions and fabrics are room highlights. Showering in Room Sa Riera or reclining on the bed includes a spectacular view over the town and out to sea.

The breakfast room is where retro meets modern and together with a yummy buffet you have the chance to catch up on world news with international papers such as the Financial Times, International Herald Tribune etc.

There is an impressive DVD collection for anyone who feels like having a quiet night at home and curling up in front of a film.

I will be back to enjoy the cozy downstairs chill out patio and garden and curl up in one of the comfy chairs there to read a book and enjoy an aperativo.

The historic town center is literally on the doorstep and some of the best fishing villages and coastal walks are fifteen minutes drive away.

Be prepared for the church bells that toll early in the morning.

I travel constantly for work and at often spend more time in hotels than at home. Aiguaclara is in my top three hotel experiences. Staying with Joan and Clara is a treat and we have agreed it will become a weekend retreat experience to repeat at least once a year.

This is a well-located hotel in the centre of Begur, and ideal for exploring the area. Clara and Joan have stamped their taste on the decor of an historic building, creating a quirky and comfortable atmosphere. Service is friendly with the owners much in evidence, and the food in the restaurant was the best we had in our 4 night stay in Spain. if we revisit the area we will certainly stay here again.

I knew the Aiguaclara was my kind of place as soon as I walked in. It doesn't feel like a hotel at all but a big, comfortable home from an unspecified time in the past, stylishly decorated with stacks of vintage suitcases, books, seashells, typewriters... a pleasing mix of well curated brick-a-brack. The colours are warm and the furniture a little bit - but not too - hip, like a friend's house you want to hang out at but don't worry about messing up.
Joan and Clara are like friends, too. When you come down for breakfast, they greet you and asked how you slept, take your coffee and juice order and then sit in the dining room with you, chatting and thumbing through the paper. They are warm and welcoming without trying too hard. Sincere.
Your hosts thoughtfully stock a fridge with drinks and snacks to which you can help yourself (marking down your purchases on an honour-system-type card), provide beach towels, bags, paddle ball and anything else you might want to borrow, and run a full multi-course restaurant at night. The hotel is on a quiet street "in town" so all you have to to do is cross the street to find yourself in the village square. Begurs wonderful beaches are a 20 minute car ride away.
I can't wait to go back!

Two years ago we stayed at a very expensive hotel in Catalonia. We felt it was cool and formal and could not relax This time we chose a central hotel Begur because we wanted to be in a more interesting place. The hotel was lovely and Juan and Clara were genuine and friendly. The room was simple, clean and stylish and the church bells were not a problem at all! You can be perfectly relaxed even in the public spaces. This is a special place with a unique atmosphere.

We spent the last 5 nights of a 2 week Spanish honeymoon here and could not have been happier. A charming colonial mansion that has been completely renovated in a shabby chic style, just around the corner from the main plaza. We had the smallest room, just inside the front door but it was cozy (crisp sheets!) and we slept peacefully every night. Clara and Joan pay attention to every detail, offering advice when asked but respecting your privacy as well. We spent every evening on the terrace enjoying cava from the self-service bar before walking 3 minutes into the center for dinner. breakfast in the terrace restaurant was an absolute delight...fruit, yogurt, chorizo, manchego, tortilla de patatas and excellent cafe. They have everything you need for the beach including towels, snorkels, beach umbrellas. When it came time to leave and we hugged good-bye I couldn't help but cry. Having travled all over Europe, I can say this is my favorite accomodation. A total gem!
