Very interesting, but make sure you go to the tourist office first as you can't see it without someone to let you in. Very interesting story behind the baths!

so don't bother trying to go on your own! Although I had gone into the tourist office for a map and information, noone bothered to tell me about the limitations on visiting the miqve, so I am afraid i missed it. Apparently it is very good...

Declared a "National Historic-Artistic Ensemble" due to its high architectural value, this charming medieval city, is part of "Caminos de Sefarad" (Red de Juderias de Espana), a network of Spanish Jewish Quarters, with the goal of protect urbanistic, architectonical, historical, artistic and cultural Sephardic Heritage in Spain. The heritage left by the Jewish community that lived in Besalú from the 9th century until 1436 is among the most outstanding. Only one left in Spain as far as anyone knows. So has scarcity value. Very good tourist office guide.

The Mikve was fascinating but more for the commentary and wonderful guide than the small indoor ceremonial baths located down a stairway near the river. Our commentary was in Spanish (which luckily I could understand) but I am sure that English could be catered for. There were only 4 people in our group so it was quite personalized. Our guide also showed us the remains of the upstairs synagogue and explained the Jewish rituals. It was well worth while.

You book at the central tourist office and that's where the tour leaves from.
