“Walking on History!”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

Loved the Roman Wall that surrounds the ¨Casco Viejo¨ of the city. Lugo is very proud of their history and have made an effort to preserve the wall in excellent condition. Taking a walk around the old city and viewing from the top gives one a sense of what it might have been like for the sentries watching out for the welfare of the people. If you are in Lugo, why would you not visit the wall?

Well preserved and quite incredible that it is still standing. Wonderful to walk on this wall in the quiet of the morning.

“The spectacular Roman walls of Lugo”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

If you love history these walls are a must. They are reputedly the most complete Roman defense structure extant in Western Europe.
You can walk all the way round them (2km) and the sights of the city from the walls are fascinating. Lugo is not an obviously wealthy city but so what.
There are few tourists around which we found surprising and their absence helped us get the feel and atmosphere of the city. A delightful place and worth a visit.

“Worth a visit”
Reviewed 6 February 2014

Walking along the walls is great. The museum, not so much. Not all accesses are equal so look around.

“Wonderful - Lugo is best seen from the walls”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

I believe Lugo is unique in Europe for having complete Roman walls all the way round the city. They are 2.117m in length and you can walk all round Lugo on top of the walls. The walkway is about 10 ft wide: there are a number of access points around the city. We spent one night and a morning in Lugo; our hotel was quite near the Cathedral, a convenient access point; and after dinner it seemed a good idea to walk round the walls. It was magical. The walls are unlit at night, except by the lights from buildings inside and outside the walls, but the views were terrific. Our hotel was shocked when we returned and told them we'd just done the walk - they said it was dangerous at night, and we should not recommend it to our friends. It is true that you can't see exactly where you are going, and in places the walkway is quite rough, and people could miss their footing and get a sprained ankle or similar. On the other hand, we are in our 60s and we were fine; we reckon the Lugo city authorities would close the access points at night if they thought the walls weren't safe; and many of the city's younger folk passed us, using the wall circuit as a running track in the cool of the evening. We liked the walls so much we walked round them again the next day: they are great in sunlight too.
