“Must have been lucky”

Our room was overlooking the garden and was of more than adequate size. We used the bicycles provided by the hotel to ride to the market at Viviero along the reclaimed estuary. The breakfast was good and the dinner we had there was the best cold soup we have ever had, salmorejo. This is not gazpacho but similar. The staff was helpful. There is a lovely black lab, who I hope is still there when you visit. He is eleven years old now, and follows the groundskeeper everywhere.

Room Tip: Ask for room overlooking garden

This hotel is well recommended in numerous guides and website because it is quiet (quite far away from Viveiro though) and its garden is lovely. However 7 rooms out of 18 are right below the attic and if you get the 115 for instance then you have been unlucky! For an average person (6 feet tall), only half of the room, and one third of the bathroom can be without crouching… For 85 Euros per night (without breakfast), you can call it bad luck… Next time, I will simply pass !

Room Tip: Avoid rooms in the attic

We stayed here for one night with friends in September having seen a review in the Cadogan Northern Spain guide.

We did not pre-book, but nevertheless the young lady receptionist was very helpful and welcoming.

The hotel is hidden away in the heart of the Galician countryside, not far from Viveiro, and is set in the most beautiful well maintained gardens.

The house itself is traditional in its construction, but enjoys inspired internal features which add another dimension of interest,

The rooms are beautiful and everything you could wish for. If you are looking for a special treat and a relaxing time then this is the place for you.

One reminder is that the restaurant is only open on Friday and Saturday evenings so bear this in mind.

We found this hotel very disappointing on a number of points
1 we booked in March when booking two adjacent rooms as we have children however when we arrived we had two rooms on separate floors
2 food we too ornate with starters such as mussels with flowers or crab sorbet sound food but nothing on the menu for children
3 rooms were basic and with out character

The Pazo da Trave is a restored villa, decorated with a unique artistic touch (as the owner is an artist) and a very homely feel. I stayed for a week with my husband who was working near Viveiro and felt very comfortable and indulged in the beautiful surroundings. The food in the restaurant is very good and the service was always superb. The villa is 2 or 3 kilometers out of town so it is a bit isolated if you don't have a car (as I didn't) however the walk down to Viveiro is very pleasant. I would recommend this hotel for anyone travelling through Northern Spain wishing to stop for a few nights somewhere special.

  • Liked — The artistic atention to detail in the decoration
  • Disliked — a little remote if getting around on foot

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to the Pazo da Trave, a palace built by the ancient Galician nobility more than five hundred years ago. The palace is set in an exceptional spot of the coast of Lugo, an area known locally as the Marina de Lugo, three kilometres away from the estuary of Viveiro tidal inlet, between beaches and mountains, in an enchanted valley surrounded by calmness, silence and nature. The palace has 18 rooms (three suites, one of the latter is truly outstanding), and spacious common areas. Its large garden is populated with traditional trees and the autochthonous vegetation of Galicia, which sway together around a well, a typical Galician granary (locally referred to as horreo), a palm tree, a pigeon-house and a chapel, all surrounded by a small forest which is also part of the palace's grounds. Also we offer our hotel premises: a dining room and a glass enclosed arbour, a sauna, a gym, a swimming pool, a lounge/reading room with a fireplace, conference rooms, balconies and galleries as well as several tables and benches scattered among the perennial green vegetation. An ideal setting for spending a few days alone or with your partner, relatives, a group of friends, holding meetings, incentive events, parties and celebrations. ... more   less
