This was our first visit to Frederick and the Hill House, and it will definitely not be our last. My husband and I stayed in the Steeple Room on the third floor and thoroughly enjoyed our 3-night stay. Damian is a wonderful hostess and shares an exquisite home with her guests. We felt as though we were visiting a good friend instead of staying at a B&B, as their home is filled with family photos, paintings, and more than a few lifetimes of cherished momentos. The location is absolutely perfect for walking all around town--day or night. The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of heat, plenty of hot water, and plenty of good light by which to read. Breakfast is more than ample and delicious; pocket a few of her cinnamon twists to take with you during the day!

My husband and I just returned from a delightful visit to Hill House. Our room was lovely, the inkeeper friendly, and the location was steps away from Volt, the Tasting Room, and all the great shopping and dining in Frederick. We arrived to breakfast late (late dinner reservation the night before) and was plesantly surprised that the innkeeper had held our breakfast (more importantly coffee) for us. I think we had the least expensive room in the inn (we were only staying 1 night and would be out of the room for most of the time so it did not matter to us) and it still was charming, with a nice balcony. We'd love to come back.

The location is marvelous: A real downtown location, lots of good restaurants around, a quick walk to many other businesses, to a hospital and to Hood College. The innkeeper can actually be quite nice, but you have to discvover it (or meet her in a relaxed moment). The breakfast was, on the first day, quite a small cooked breakfast, on the second day rather filling and nice, and a completely different selection on the plate. The water for tea was cold, though.
The room was nice, if overdecorated, the bed ok, no real place to sit there, the bathroom mostly clean, the shower had lots of hot water. The trash in the bathroom was not emptied out, only on the second night.
Lots of noises from the not very efficient heating during the night, so not a very good sleep.
Prime location, but some difficulties.

My fiancé and I took a short trip up from DC to eat at Volt's Table 21 and decided to make a night of it by staying at Hill House. All in all, it was a great weekend. Our room was quite comfortable with a nice soft bed and its own private entrance to the balcony garden. I had read prior reviews and was a bit concerned that the owner would be difficult to deal with, but we found Damian to be extremely accommodating and she made an excellent breakfast for us on Sunday morning. The location could not have been more convenient, as it is about a block away from Volt as well as the other shops and restaurants in downtown Frederick. I'd highly recommend Hill House as your base for a weekend break from DC or elsewhere.

Read other reviews before booking that mentioned the innkeeper being aloof or business like. That wasn't a concern and the place sounded pretty in agood location. However we arrived
to be greeted only by a note telling us our room and what time breakfast was. When we returned at 10pm the room was freezing with the airconditioner blasting (it was 70 degrees outside). I slept with sweater socks and blanket. We called and left a message to no avail. Next morn at our sparce breakfast the excuse for our unpleasant nite was that another guest room operates the controls and the owner had no idea it was so cold. Somehow I doubt that this is the first time this occured Sure needs a better system

We were told we could arrive anytime on Friday for our weekend visit. Being an innkeeper myself, I know how difficult it can be when guests arrive early, so we decided to wait until the advertised check-in time of 3:00 pm.

It was a very cold and wet day and we had to wait for what seemed like an eternity for someone to come to the door (had the weather been nicer, it may not have seemed as long) and then we were told that she was just about to get a shower. As were were somewhat shown around and lectured on breakfast time and how strict the time is and not to be late we thought the shortness was due to the fact that we had interrupted her shower. Sadly, the abrupt manners were present for our entire visit.

The good news . . . The room was stunning as was the entire home. We were the first ones to arrive and peeked at the other rooms and they looked equally as lovely.

The bad news . . . there was appareantly no heat. At first I thougt I was cold from having been out in the nasty weather, but after about a 1/2 an hour, we realized that it was colder in the room than outside. We called downstairs and were told the "old house story" and how hard they are to heat and how long it takes to heat up, so that it may take a bit for the room to come up to temperature. I would just like to note here that we were not a last minute reservation, we had made our reservation a good 6 months in advance, so perhaps turning the heat on before we arrived would have been an option, but it wasn't so we decided a warm shower may do the trick.

The tub was less than inviting. The room aside from the tub was very clean, so I thought maybe the tub was just old and tired looking, but after a minute or so in the shower, I realized the problem. The water doesn't drain - at least there was hot water and there seemed to be plenty of it.

Since the room was still very cold, we decided to go out to visit some friends and find a warm spot. We were assuming that the heat had been turned on in the room and that it wold be warm by the time we returned. Unfortunately, this was not the case. We had dinner with friends and returned around 11:00, almost 8 hours after having called to request heat for the room, but alas, it was still freezing in our room. We called downstairs, but there was no answer. We quite literally put on everything we had with us and cuddled up for body heat. We managed to make it through the night although it was not pleasant, which is very unfortunate as the beds are really quite comfortable and I am sure we would have had a wonderful night's rest had we not been so cold.

The next morning we made our way downstairs for breakfast. We were late and as we had been told, there are no allowances for this - the food is set out at the advertised time. Fortunately, our food had not been removed and it was still waiting for us and she was gracious enough to microwave it for us so we didn't go hungry.

We mentioned again how cold it was in our room, and this time we were told that it would be too hot for the other guests if they turned the heat enought to warm our room and that the other rooms would complain that it is too hot.

Quick note for the owners - I actually do understand this as I live in an older home - there are some really easy and quick fixes. The easiest is to supply a space heater. Another alternative would be to add supplemental electric heat.

After breakfast we returned to our room and we actually heard the heat come on. It never did get warm in our room, but our second night was more comfortable as it was at least warmer than the outside.

We were out very late our second night and did not plan to attend breakfast as we could not possibly make the breakfast time.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that breakfast was kept for us even at our late arrival.

This is a very beautiful home and it is wonderfully decorated. I'm sure it is a great place to visit when it is warm outside especially if you are not looking for a friendly face to greet you. And I am sure if you arrive at the scheduled time the breakfast is quite good (although there is no selection, and no consideration for dietary restrictions).

At first it seemed like a dream... We were travelling from Spain and wanted to stay outside of Baltimore....They were willing to accomodate our infant.....but without warning our reservation was abandoned and we were ignored completely when we implored for alternative lodgings. Common courtesy has died at Hill House!!!!!!
