To visit the popular brewery, you need to sign up on their website for a tour weeks in advance, and they are usually full... but don't let that discourage you. If you check back on the date you're interested in (or the day before) some times there are last minute cancellations. For $5 you are given a wristband with 5 tabs and a souvenir glass. The informative tour takes about an hour and the guide walks you through various parts of this small, very clean brewery. At the end of the tour you can sample 5 beers. Try some of their limited release or seasonal brews. When we were there they had a delicious summer ale called "Dead Rise" that was flavored with Old Bay.... You can't get more Maryland than that!

This tour was awesome! Some friends and I recently spent the weekend visiting a number of breweries and wineries. ...This was by far our favorite! The tour was sold out ahead of time but we took a chance anyway and stopped to see if we could tag along. They added our group of 4 without hesitation. The tour itself was unique and fun, our tour guide, Amy knocked it out of the park. The tasting was amazing...five generous samples of our choice and a souvenir glass. We filled up a few growers the beer was so outstanding! We all wish that we lived closer to do this more often!

Went on the tour with homebrewer's club - Frederick Original Ale Makers (FOAM). Tour leader showed us around and answered the many questions - some pretty detailed and technical. And, of course, tasted some of their brews on draft.
Flying Dog was an excellent host and I hope to take the tour again when there is a little more time to try more beers.
There are two issues here 1) the tour and 2) the quality of the products. I give the tour 5 stars and the brews 4 stars. The only brewer around that is better is Dogfish. I feel that Flying Dog doesn't get as much respect than it does as I have heard many locals saying that it's just OK. As a homebrewer for 20+ years, I disagree - Flying Dog makes much better ales then the predecessor at this site and much better than most all of the competition (both local and national). Yes, most every one of their beers are better than the biggest of the Microbrewers up there in the Boston area. Dogfish has a slight edge as they seem to cater to the smaller batch, specialty brews (and they make 120 minute IPA!!). Flying Dog has increased their line in this area but I have not had the opportunity to try many of them - and they seem pretty expensive.
Check them out - you won't be disappointed.
Tour takes about 2 h and costs $5. You get 5 samples.

Evidently the brewery tours here sell out fast. Book far in advance if you can.

The tour is like most you'll find elsewhere. Starts with a short history of the company then moves on to a tour of the facility and how beer is brewed. A nice touch was being able to sample the beer at different stages of production. The charismatic tour guide will also emphasize the motto of the brewery: good beer, no [kidding - I'm censoring myself to keep within the TripAdvisor guidelines]. Bad language is used, however everyone touring should be over 21 and should have heard bad words before. Not to mention quite a lot of the product line uses the same bad words.

Following the tour is a tasting session in the retail area. You get 5 tastes with the tour and glass. Each is approximately 6 ounces (or half a beer). Most of their line is quite hoppy, however if you don't like hops, stick to the stouts. I also recommend the In Heat Wheat for people afraid of "strong beers". They serve all of their regular product line, as well as season offerings, and beers only available at the brewery. If you purchase a growler you can also take their beer home with you.

They don't serve food during regular tours, therefore if you need to soak up the alcohol after the tour head down the street to Frisco's for sandwiches, soups, and spuds.

It's definitely worth the visit if you like their beers and want to try others in their product line. If you hate their beer and have no interest in how it's brewed, this is not the tour for you.

Was closed for tours when I visited, but that didn't stop me from visiting the gift shop. Nice selection.
