“Great Holiday at Port Denia”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2014

Had a wonderful holiday at Port Denia on the 29th April for 2 weeks. Hotel clean and all the staff were great. Food very good atmosphere very friendly, we were 2 ladies and had rooms on the 7th floor with wonderful views of the sea and pool. The hotel was 50% English and Spanish mainly pensioners the second week. The only slight complaint was that the sun beds are packed together and it was hard to find any shade round the pool. Position of the hotel superb for walking to the Marina and into town. Also a good bus service outside.

Room Tip: 7th floor rooms overlooking the sea and pool e.g. room 717 up. Rooms were quiet but at this time of...

Just returned from a walking holiday based at the Port Denia Hotel.
The hotel looked to have been built 30 or so years ago but was nonetheless perfectly adequate.
I had a pleasant room with a balcony and a sea view. The state of the room was immaculate and it and all the public areas were kept spotlessly clean.
The staff were polite, cheerful and attentive.
Most of the guests were English and of mature years but there were a good number of Spaniards.
The only downside was the food. It was clearly aimed at the elderly English.
The best two dishes I had were bread and butter pudding and an apple crumble. One day cottage pie was on offer.
The hotel clearly aims to please it's typical guests and I think it does so but for the seeker of Spanish cuisine and travelers under the age of 60 it is not ideal

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room.

Had a very enjoyable stay at the Port Denia back in January. Food was excellent as was the attentiveness of the staff. The hotel was clean and we had a balcony room overlooking the pool, for the best views try for a higher floor.

A lot of the guests were either with saga or their Spanish counterparts, many enjoyed dancing to the live entertainment which although not to my taste I could still enjoy watching others having fun. We also had many friendly conversations with the older guests and never felt unwelcome, indeed we also saw some young families with children enjoying their stays.

Room Tip: Take a walk across the road and along the beach to Las Rotas and stop at one of the cafe's.

My partner and I spent 4 weeks here in Nov/Dec 2013. It's a decent hotel - clean, with very friendly staff. We had a room with a balcony and pool view, which was very nice - lots of sun - though the room was a bit compact. There are bigger rooms at the front of the hotel, but these do not have balconies.

We obviously travelled out of season, so the hotel was quiet-ish much of the time. It was busier at weekends, when there were more Spanish people (including children) around. Despite other reviewers' experience, this was no problem for us - you expect a few Spanish people in Spain, and we never encountered any badly behaved children.

A bus to Denia leaves hourly from a stop behind the hotel. It costs 1.50 euros single and runs every hour, with an hour off at lunchtime; last buses are early evening - check first/last/lunchtime times with reps/hotel staff. But it's an easy walk each way (about 15-20 minutes' stroll) if you don't want to wait for the bus.

Downsides for us:
1) Wifi in our hotel room was very poor for the first 2 weeks, and stopped altogether after that, though it was still available in the bar. We mentioned the lack of connectivity to both the Saga reps and the hotel reception, but apparently nothing could be done. (Even the Saga reps said that it was a problem for them in their office - though of course this may have changed since we were there.) This was a real downer for us, as wifi availability in rooms was a key reason why we booked this hotel. (I had work to do via email, and we both like to listen to Radio 4.)

2) Food was very very bland. There was choice, but the blandness got a bit wearying. The best food, we thought, was the fish. The lunchtime paellas were a particular disappointment - a bit of oregano and pepper would have been nice! Obviously not everyone likes spicy food, but this was the opposite extreme. All we could find was just a bottle of tabasco to add a few drops to the food. Even the curry nights offered the blandest of bland food. Why not offer a choice between spicy and non-spicy dishes?

3) We thought both the bar and (especially) the dining room were very poorly designed. In the bar, it was sometimes hard to see what was going on (if you wanted to watch the dancing!) because of the positioning of the mirrored pillars. In the main dining room, the siting of pillars meant that it was hard to squeeze in between these pillars, the buffet and the tables. Must be chaos when the place is packed!

4) We didn't much care for Denia. Our fault - we were hoping for a town with old churches, open spaces, picturesque plazas and the like. It's really not like that, though there is an older area up near the town hall. There are also a few older bars if you dip in to some small side streets that are a goodish walk along the sea front from the hotel.

Other points:
If you are interested in watching football, rugby, etc. on TV, there is a bar at the back of the hotel called the Cafe Ole which shows Sky Sports. Closed Mondays. Run by a very friendly English couple. Next to this is a pizza place that we were told is very good, and also a bar/restaurant that's a popular place for jazz on Sunday lunchtimes (closed November). There are two small 'supermarkets' (which are really just large corner shops) between the hotel and these bars/restaurants.

On your way into town (about 5 minutes walk from the hotel), there is a slightly bigger 'supermarket' and a tabac.

All these (and other) shops close at lunchtimes (about 2.30 to 5pm, though this does vary).

Other people have mentioned the tram service from Denia town into Benidorm. It's a long journey!

Next to the tram station in Denia there is an English/Irish-run bar (the Railway Tavern) that also shows Sky Sports. Again, it's run by very friendly people.

Finally - we travelled with Saga (with whom we've holidayed before). I notice that a few other Saga guests in this hotel have referred to a 'Saga downstairs bar/Saga library that other hotel guests intruded into'. As far as I'm aware, neither the downstairs bar nor the library is exclusively for Saga use. So Saga guests do themselves no favours by complaining that non-Saga guests use these facilities.

We visited this hotel in January as part of the Spanish Imserso system. The hotel was full of English Saga holidaymakers and Spanish Imserso guests. Hotel was very good especially considering it is categorised 3 star. Food was good with plenty of choice etc for both nationalities.
Several English guests we spoke to had been coming to the same hotel for years - so a good recommendation for it. Also some were there for long stays of up to 3 months.

Room Tip: The rooms without balconies were bigger. Ours had two double beds.
