use Holiday Inns a lot but never stayed at a Garden Court before. This and curiousity about how bad it was made me decide to give it a go. Disapointingly I was not confronted by a cross between Faulty Towers and a Holiday Inn but instead a cross between a Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express.

Room fronted onto A1 but noise was not an issue. It had a bath and was furnised quite nicely.

Reception was small and very close to restaurant and small bar. I did not eat there but the smell of food while checking in did smell good. The menu did offer a good value set menu and the staff were attentive when I looked at the menu

The hotel is next to a 24 hour little Somerfield supermarket attached to a petrol station which is good if you are on a budget (2 litres of mineral water for less than 50p).

Behind the hotel is a little nature area and garden dedicated to a former racing cyclist, worth the quarter of a mile stroll.

Staff were all good and friendly, they are unsure why they get bad reviews on this site - as am I!

Can't seem to even manage a simple room booking; we'd reserved a large number of rooms for our wedding guests (as our first choice of hotel went into administration) and ended up with more than half the guests being unable to secure a room at all, some having no room on arrival despite have confirmed their bookings in advance and worse yet, no efforts at all from this hotel to put up these guests elsewhere,
Mistake after mistake, all compounding into one huge B-up - never ever use these guys, you're better off with a newspaper and a bus shelter.

Checked in to be told by snotty receptionist that my children don't look their age and we will have to pay extra! Who travels locally with passports??! We said that's fine we will cancel the room and go elsewhere - this was at 4.30pm. It's too late to cancel we are told (you need to cancel by 4pm!) and we still need to pay for the room. Luckily my husband has scanned copies of passports on his laptop so we managed to prove the childrens ages! Were we lying? - NO! Did we get an apology? - NO!! When we checked out they still wanted to charge for dinner we never had - we specifically went out as we didn't want to eat in such a miserable hotel!!

We arrived at 8pm & found that the receptionist was also a waitress, bar staff & housekeeping !!

The food in the resturant was ok, you got what you paid for really.

The bedroom was basic really, the bed was very soft & needed replacing. Bathroom needed a new shower & loo roll holder, but considering we were only there for one night, we couldnt be bothered to change rooms.

The customer questionaire about the service & room was in German, so we couldnt say much then !!

It was ok for a cheap night to stay, but not sure i would stay there again !!

I visited the hotel on Sunday 26 April for a family christening held in a function suite alongside the main hotel.

The tables were nicely set up around the floor, the room reasonably bright & the staff in attendance were polite & friendly enough on the whole but the buffet provided [£14 per head from the 'Wedding List' as no 'Christening List' was available] was disappointing to say the least, both in terms of quality & quantity in particular. It was true to say that the buffet ordered was for a lower number than the expected guests but this was a choice based on previous experience at other venues where we had plenty to eat & more still left over. As it turned out, with the usual last minute drop-outs, there were only half a dozen over & above those paid for, 4 of whom missed out on food altogether & two kiddies who had eaten their own packed lunch prior to arrival, due to dietary requirements.

My observation would be that because the hotel had 'discounted' the room hire, from a previously exorbitant rate for a county hotel slap bang beside a main trunk road, they compensated themselves by providing the absolute bare minimum of food per person for the buffet which contained some fairly sorry looking items such as dry tasting mini quiches & unappetising wafer thin meat such as could be bought from the local budget food store. I could go on but hopefully you'll get the picture and not make the same mistake. The food in the main restaurant may well be okay but this most certainly wasn't!

The lady organising the party has since called the hotel to make her complaint & was met with any number of excuses [I do know this first hand thanks to the wonder of 'loudspeaker phones'] & it was suggested that she ought to have complained on the day . In fact she had done just that, politely pointing out that she felt there wasn't enough food and I myself, as a guest, voiced concerns too but whilst the lady 'in charge' was very nice she gave the impression that there was no option of topping up the buffet and that the fault was not with the hotel but with the Client.

There were other issues which added to the above such as refusal, albeit polite, to put sealed, unopened bottles of fresh milk in the fridge for the baby on grounds of Health & Safety, an uncomfortable mattress etc. Individually these are minor irritations but taken as a whole, together with the buffet issue it left the family with a sense of considerable disappointment clouding what should have been a special day.

My last words would be that if you are considering hosting an event at this hotel please consider very carefully when planning your catering requirements. Remember, what looks good on a menu may well turn up looking sadly disappointing & inadequate when on the table in front of you.

On a journey to Cambridgeshire, we stoped at this Holiday Inn as it was directly on the A1m and made for a convienient stop.

Staff/reception,

Very polite staff and a nice welcome. We were checked in very quickly by the receptionist. The public areas include, reception,lounge/bar and restaurant.

Food & Beverage

As we arrived late 9.40pm we went straight to our room. We were informed at reception on arrival that food stops being served at 10pm, so if we wanted restaurant or room service, we had to be quick. Menu was o.k but felt it was lacking a bit and was missing the basics, for example, no sandwiches or burgers. We both choose the mixed grill, which was plentiful and tasty, but not amazing. It tasted a bit like what i would call microwave cooking, i don't know if some elements were all ready cooked and they were just warming them through. Breakfast was served in the restaurant, which looked fairly newly refurbished compared to the rest of the hotel. If you have stayed at other Holiday Inn's you may be disappointed by breakfast as it was plated rather than a buffet. Unfortunately i found it very greasy, and i would even go as far as saying the sausages had been deep fried to speed up cooking. There was a nice selection of fruit and juice to help yourself to, with tea or coffee and toast being brought from the kitchen.

Rooms

The room was comfortable, but not a very good standard. We stayed in room 26 and found the bed umcomfortable because of worn out mattress. The room was fairly clean, little or no dust in hard to reach places. Furniture was old and dated and the introduction of new modern elements such as pictures etc just looked out of place and made the room look worse. The bathroom was a real let down. Looked like it was straight from the 70's with plastic moulding every where and several different colours again. I think they have tried to update on a budget. Pink bath suite, grey tiles, marble effect plastic, it just all felt lack luster and uncared for, which may explain the toliet flush handle being broken, mold on the grount of the tiles, rough toilet paper and starchy towels.

Overall

Well, it's trying to be something it's not. This hotel either needs a full refurbishment and brought bang up to date or it needs to be demolished and use the land for a bright new airy hotel and conference facility. Would i stay again? I don't think so, i would probably travel the few extra miles and stay at the premiere inn or complete my journey.
