“Lovely setting”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

We stayed here over the Bank holiday along with a wedding party which made the hotel quite noisy at night. The location of the hotel is lovely and very tranquil with a beautiful old building. We had a room on the ground floor which did make it quite noisy at night. The doors and walls were quite thin so the noise travelled easily. The room was large with a large bathroom with free toiletries and coffee and tea making facilities with free bottled water which were replenished at night before we went to bed which we appreciated. The bed though was hard and uncomfortable as were the pillows. The breakfast was served in the Orangery and was very good. There was lots of choice and the cooked breakfast was very tasty. The staff were very friendly and helpful in the restaurant and at the reception..

Room Tip: Ask for one on a higher floor overlooking the Canal

really beautiful building in a fantastic setting with really friendly and helpful staff you couldn't really ask for much more. If you want a romantic place to go this is it. Food was good too, although a bit basic for my liking menu needs updating a little, it was tasty but could do better.
That is just personal taste though.

Room Tip: get a room over looking the front of hotel

We paid £135 for a standard double room which we felt was extremely overpriced. Not really sure how they justify such a high price - you certainly don't get anything special for your money. The room was old fashioned and in need of an update. It's not the usual type of place we would stay in, normally prefer something more modern and interesting but were there for a wedding. Bed was hard with hard uncomfortable pillows. Also we were on the ground floor corridor which was very noisy. Drinks in the bar were expensive (and we're used to London prices!) -at £10 for two single spirits with mixers. The bar area was very nice though.

We stopped here as a wedding guest in August 2013. The room was very nice, clean, spacious and had all that we could ask for including a selection of teas, bottled water, toiletries etc. Breakfast was served in a beautiful room and the selection was excellent and very tasty. The staff were very helpful and welcoming and I would recommend this hotel and would certainly stay again.

The first time I saw this place we arrived late at night and the place was lit up beautifully! it was astonishing, really pretty! The reception staff were lovely and friendly, I didn't pick up any names but they were all lovely! We checked into our room and my god it was amazing!! with a seating area in the bay window. Even though it looked out to the front of the hotel there was no noise at all!!
I travelled up the same way a week later and I had to revisit this place! I actually saw it in the day time and it was just as pretty! there was a wedding happening so I thought there would be quite a lot of noise which there wasn't. Again the reception staff were faultless and the room was amazing. We didn't get warned that because our room looked over the garden there would be a fire show on that evening, which didn't bother us, we stood and watched from our window! the wedding caused no noise for us at all.
Both mornings that I stayed I went to breakfast. The first time it wasn't very busy at breakfast and it was a plated service, which was lovely, there was loads to choose on the menu. The second time it was busier with the wedding guests, so it was a buffet breakfast, but again it was just as nice! loads of variety! Plenty of toast bought to the table both times also.
Definitely will be coming back to this hotel, it definitely worth the value!

With many happy memories of previous overnight and dining experiences at the Moat House expectations were high for the latest visit. Telephone booking was very professional and arrival at the hotel was all good. The room was lovely. No problems so far.

Got to the bar and restaurant and all of that changed. My plan was a bottle of champagne in the bar until 8.00 pm then move to the restaurant for their taster menu. Ordered bottle of House Champagne at the bar to be told that they only had pink which was not what I wanted. Member of staff standing there overruled the barman and said that they had some elsewhere. I waited for five or ten minutes and she turned up with a bottle. I then had to ask for an ice bucket. bottle opened and glasses in hand I rejoined my wife. (Table service would have been nice) poured Champagne and found that it was at room temperature. When I complained to passing member of staff he was apologetic, offered a free drink whilst he got another one and went to find one. Free G & Ts arrived and restaurant manager walked past when we asked if our meal could be delayed from 8.00 to 8.15 pm as we were having a bit of trouble. This was confirmed. New bottle arrived which, we were told, had been in the ice maker for five or ten minutes. Needless to say it was no colder than the first one. In the belief that the hotel did not own any cold champagne , they could have offered a different brand if they did, we accepted the second bottle.

We then got to the restaurant at 8.15 pm as arranged. First course arrived at after 8.55. Wine waiter came and went twice with the first glass of wine (taster menu) to find that we did not have any food. The restaurant was very busy and there were clearly not enough staff. Still, as we got into the meal at 9.00 onwards the food was excellent and at that time many of the tables were now clear so the staff were able to give to us the service that we believed that we had paid for.

Still, on the bright side, the food was much enjoyed and we have remained married!
