“The food was no match for the hotel...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2012

We stayed here for one night last year, booking on the basis of an affiliation with the Great Inns that it shares with our favourite hotel. The hotel didn't disappoint, it's in a great location in the centre of a beautiful little village, a lovely old building with modern rooms. Our room was lovely with a great bathroom and comfortable 4 poster canopy bed.

We ate in the bar at lunch time as we arrived which was a nice setting and was busy, althogh the food was bland. We'd booked into the restaurant in the evening as Comrie isn't the largest place. The food although reasonably priced was a real let down, from the uninspired menu to the service, no-one seemed to be trying. This place is in easy reach of some of the best produce that Scotland has to offer and we couldn't see much of it on display and certainly not cooked well. The venison we had was overcooked due to being sat under the lamps at the pass too long. We found it a very disappointing meal.

In summary, stay at this beautiful hotel (I'd rate as 5 star) but find somewhere else to eat (I'd rate as 1 star).

My husband and I stayed in Royal Hotel, Comrie for 4 nights as a short holiday. We had picked the hotel on the recommendation of a friend and so glad we did.

It only has 11 rooms so you do get a lovely personal service. The public areas have been beautifully decorated, lounge and library are particularly lovely rooms. We were put in a 4 poster room and the subtle colours and big sofa were fab. Had a great view too.

The cooked breakfasts are cooked to order so always lovely and fresh, not greasy etc. Top quality produce used. Best bacon ever, although the black pudding and haggis and sausages and porridge were great too. It is a totally difference experience to staying at a big hotel with a large self service area and hot food which has been sitting out for ages.

We enjoyed our stay so much that we stayed an extra night. We felt so well looked after. Very friendly, helpful staff with a nice relaxed feel throughout hotel.

We had dinner 3 nights out of 4 and the food is so good, excellent value for money too. Only word of warning about the food is that the portions are very hearty so be careful how many courses you order.

Wonderful wee hotel and we will definitely be back. Hopefully soon.

Room Tip: 4 poster rooms are lovely if you want a treat

We had guests staying for the weekend so ate our meals at The Royal, our local hotel. The selection of food is tremendous from fish n' chips to the best of seasonal dishes.
We returned for a sumptuous breakfast with a wonderful selection. Smoked Haddock, smoked Salmon and the full cooked breakfast with black pudding and haggis was great. Our guests enjoyed it as did I not having to cook and everyone enjoying their meals. The staff are attentive hit not intrusive and wee tweaks to selections were no trouble. Thank you !

Really enjoyed our lunch in the Royal Hotel but not impressed with having to wait so very long for it to arrive.

Stayed there for one night last weekend. The hotel was full so we were allocated the 'Annex' accross the courtyard which is a 2 bedroom 'self catering' house with kitchen, lounge etc. In a word 'excellent'. You have to see it to understand its appeal and charm. Going back at the end of the night to enjoy a last drink in the quiet of your own lounge. One small point is that the bedroom at the top has quite low ceiling so if you are 6ft + then you may not find it to your liking.

The hotel itself is everything the good reviews suggest so no point in labouring the point. We ate dinner in the hotel and 4 of us had different meals and all had the same view 'excellent food'. Would certainly go back as there are several very pleasant walks round the area.

Took a one night stay here, and its also pet friendly. The staff were very welcoming and accomodating. The rooms are very nice, well appointed, and clean. Ceiling was low on mine, but, not being tall, not a major issue.
The hotel interior is very nice, very comfy library, excellent friendly bar area, nice selection of drinks.
Food wise, we went for the mixed meze, which was very good. Mains were Shin of beef, which was melt in the mouth. Very nice indeed. I went for lamb, this was excellent and cooked absulutely to perfection for me (medium in this case), it was accompanied by excellent potato rosti, nice crispy outside. Wasn't 100% convinced about the additional Aubergine, as it didn't really take on the flavour of the excellent jus, and I would have perhaps went for a parsnip puree or another alternative vedgetable. Then again, I'm not a huge Aubergine fan. The waiting staff were extremely attentive, and even although they were rushed off there feet, we were never kept waiting. An all round excellent stay, I would be happy to return.

Room Tip: If you are tall, ask for a room that is not on the top floor as the ceilings can be low. I'm sho...

Set in the very picturesque village of Comrie this is a great small hotel set right on the boarders of the highlands.

I have been returning year after year and they maintain the same staff who are always a pleasure to speak to and helpful.

The food is excellent with locally sourced meats I can fully recommend the venison steaks!

I would also recommend for an afternoon tea or just a late afternoon ‘earth quake’ ale in the wingback chair by the fire.

I truly great place to relax
