“A hidden gem overlooking the Serengeti”
Reviewed 29 June 2010

It has become an annual pilgramage to the Brynllydan Hotel for my wife & I and our two friends. We first discovered this gem in June 2009, when we stayed for one night only, so this year we decided to return for three nights to enjoy the cosy friendly atmosphere, the marvellously accomodating proprietors Coleen & Mike and the superb culinary delights of the restauraunt. The rooms were always smartly presented, well turned out and very clean. (The only thing missing, is the hot tub that Coleen reckons she's been promised by Mike)!

We had decided to attempt to conquer Snowden during our trip and despite us arriving at 11.00 p.m. on Friday evening, Coleen welcomed us with a smile and poured us all a most welcome drink. When asked if we could store some drinks in thier fridge overnight, this was no problem and she even provided us with a packed lunch & two flasks of coffee to take with us.

The view from the hotel is stunning and when you look across the valley from the seating at the front of the hotel you could almost believe you were in Africa looking out across the Serengeti, with the back drop of the Snowdonia mountain range adding the finishing touches. The hotel is perfectly situated with Snowdonia 20 minutes away if you want a back packing adventure or Porthmadog 10 minutes away in the other direction if you want shops or the wonderfully relaxing Black Rock beach.

The restaurant is first class, the quality of the food is excellent and very reasonably priced, with a fairly extensive wine list.

Overall, a truly wonderful experience, I don't doubt for one minute we will be going back next year (maybe sooner) and would recommend this hotel without hesitation. Try it out you will not be disappointed.

We have been visiting this area of Wales for 9 years and found that this hotel has a lot going for it. We received a wonderfull homely welcome from the owner, Colleen, who showed us to our room, which had beautiful views of the surrounding valley including a snow topped Snowdon. This friendly warm and homely atmosphere continued throughout the whole of our 6 night stay and was complimented by the excellant breakfast and service.

The hotel restaurant is open to residents and non-residence, of which in our opinion, has a selection and standard of food and wines very hard to match in the surrounding areas. There is a standard and a-la-carte menu, but in addition there were daily specials to tempt us. We recommend booking for evening meals and Sunday lunches.

Nothing disapointed us and we were sad to have to head for home after a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing stay. We will have no hesitation in booking again.

This was a great find on our trip to Portmeirion. The accomodation was comfortable, spacious and clean. The views are spectacular and it is a good base for walking. The added bonus of a wonderful restaurant with a wide choice of dishes, cooked beautifully, and a good winelist too, meant that we could enjoy the evenings and not worry about driving! The owners and staff are very friendly and full of information about the area. The road, altho' basically single track, has plenty of passing places and we never met another vehicule on it. I would recommend this place as we felt we had good value for money here.

First problem is that GPS takes you to a farm!! - they were helpful in re-directing us.
We booked by phone - but some important details were not in the online info nor told us at booking.
We had planned to stay 3 nights, however there is no room phone, no mobile service, no internet and no response to the reception night bell (about 8 pm). As seniors this is a unacceptable deficit - there was no way of calling for help if one of us should be unwell in the night.
So we decided to leave after one night; then the owner became unreasonable and said that we should have known her cancellation policy. Which is not published in reception, nor in the room, nor told us by phone at time of booking, nor on arrival.
Trying to settle the matter, I asked how much to settle in cash; we agreed the amount - owner gave us a receipt but also 'forgot' to give me the four pounds change.
Even though we had settled & got a receipt, she threatened 'we do not go to court - we use Debt Collectors'.
As we were leaving, owner rushed up demanding a trivial change to the note we had left recording our side of our experience.
We filed a formal complaint with the local Tourist Office in the hope that their inspectors will provide remedial guidance and ensure that this business is properly described.
