“A bit of a disappomintment”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 June 2014

We had great expectations of this B&B, but it failed to live up to them. We had expected a nice quiet location, but it is right next to a busy trunk road. The room was so hot and stuffy we had to keep the windows open for the temperature to be bearable, but that meant that we were disturbed by traffic noise. The friends who were with us were on a 4 day cycle ride and so wanted to shower when they arrived, but after one had showered the water pressure disappeared and the shower would not work. They wanted an early breakfast to get started on next day's ride, and the information in the room said this could arranged, but when they asked, the earliest breakfast could be done was 8.15. The final disappointment was the next morning when I woke up and went to make a cup of tea only to find there was no milk in the room. Not all was bad, though. The rooms were pleasant enough other than being hot, the staff were friendly and the breakfast was pretty good.

A super place by the river. Ate outside and watched the swans and ducks on the river.
A small menu but could have chosen most things.
Everything we had was delicious, staff were great. A relaxed evening with good food.

I don't know quite what to say here because the ambience was fab and I couldn't fault the staff. The criticism is for lunch there isn't enough choice and I agree that a menu change is needed more often when they're only offering a handful of dishes. Looking at the evening menu it was the same with maybe 4 extra dishes and to be honest 2 of those were steak and fish, why they couldn't be offered at lunchtime I don't know. Living in Hereford 20 odd miles away I can't say I'd race back and this was not because the food was bad it's purely the limited choice. I would say it was a great place in the day for cake and coffee and a nice glass of wine by the river.

Back here after a gap of 4 years and standards remain high. We had lunch of pulled pork with Texas toast and crab pappardelle. Both delicious. Dessert was chocolate and orange torte plus strawberry and rhubarb trifle. Good puds! Casual and informal with good, attentive service. Nice relaxing couple of hours to begin our Hay Festival week.

I was recently after a 2 day break in Kilvert country, with easy access to Hay for the bookshops. I just had a gut feeling this would be my kind of place. I was right. I booked 2 nights B&B and tried the restaurant on the first night. I was sufficiently impressed to return on the following night, despite the culinary temptations of Hay, which has it's fair share of good eateries.

I found the River Café staff very welcoming and throughout my stay, they looked after me extremely well. The entire place is a complex, consisting of a café, which morphs into a very good restaurant at night, offering a comprehensive wine list. It also boasts 4 en suite bedrooms, suitable for families, couples and solo travellers. In addition, it has acquired an adjoining Victorian chapel which is in the final stages of restoration as an up market bunkhouse. It also functions as a mini adventure centre, where you can hire a canoe to paddle down the Wye. You will be brought back in a minibus at the end of the day or you could pack a tent and enjoy a canoe safari. Bicycles and Vespa scooters are also available for hire.

My room was very clean. Some aspects were basic - just a rail instead of a wardrobe, but the en suite bathroom was of a generous size, with a decent walk in shower - not just an afterthought stuck in a corner of the room.

Breakfast was excellent. Each morning, a fresh bottle of single variety Herefordshire apple juice was provided and the cooked option consisted of quality ingredients, like cherry tomatoes on the vine and gammon style bacon, served, for a change, on a large plate. I ate in the restaurant on both nights. The décor is fairly plain, with some well chosen photographs. The furnishings are mainly pine refectory tables and benches, but it has a pleasant feel and it overlooks the river Wye. The menu was limited to about 6 starters and main courses, but it's well chosen to appeal to most tastes. I enjoyed a ham terrine starter and a very good Butty Bach beef casserole, served on a bed of mash. Butty Bach is an excellent regional beer which uses hops from Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire, the 3 main hop producing counties in the area. Try it on draught in local pubs. It's awesome.

The River Café is ideally located for Hay-on-Wye, which is just 4 miles up the road, but you may find prices here more reasonable. Take my advice, and leave the car behind. Although there is a reliable bus service which runs every 2 hours, connecting Glasbury to Hay, I chose to walk to Hay via a stretch of the Wye Valley Trail, a long distance footpath. It's about 5 and a half miles, but worth it for stunning views of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. But, if you like books, take a rucksack and be prepared to travel back on the bus, as I did, having bought 15!

There are many hidden gems in the area. I'm a great fan of the Victorian diarist, Francis Kilvert, and you can visit his quiet, peaceful country church at Clyro, just a mile or so from Hay, where he spent 7 years of his ministry.

I don't think you will be disappointed with the River Café and if your experience is similar to mine, you will find the young staff very friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: You could ask for a room with a river view, but the location of the café is such that you won't...

Great location on the river. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and kept our room to shower after a day on the river. Food of a good standard. Recommended and good value for money overall. Close to haye on Wye (approx 5 mile
Drive). Has a local pub up the road too though didn't try it. New bunkhouse looks great

We often stop here for a bite to eat. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The coffee is good and generally the food is enjoyable. We do love to sit outside and watch the river. A good place to go and beats any of the cafe s in Hay
