“Fantastic!!”
Reviewed 18 March 2010

As a regular visitor to cardiff on business, I regularly stay in the city. Like many on a business trip, I normally stay in hotel chains such as Travel lodge. Premier inn etc. On a recent visit to the city I was unable to stay in any of the previously mentioned hotels. Any way to cut a long story short - Myself and several business colleagues booked into the Glendale Hotel in Plymouth road, we were given a great welcome at the hotel, the staff were fantastic and nothing was to much trouble. I can not ever remember coming away from a hotel with such a positive opinion - by the end of the week the staff felt more like friends than just staff. The Hotel also combines one of the best, if not the best italian resteraunt I have ever eaten in. All my colleagues were of the same opinion, that the whole experience was a total joy....... we will certainly not be booking into any other hotels if the Glendale is available??!! A BIG BIG thankyou to Tony, Gregor, Franko, Stacey, And special thanks to the chef,,,, Damien we believe??
Mr Burke and all the guys and girls from A.T.W.L (See you all real soon)

The Glendale, AKA Villa Napoli, is scuffy and tired! The place is rundown.
People you meet in Penarth say it has great food, though only a few have actually recently eaten there.
We have previously eaten there and the evening food was good, but this time while on an extended stay we only had breakfasts.
The kitchen ran out of bread during 1 breakfast when my wife just wanted toast and jam!

Quite frankly we did not want to eat an evening meal there anyway after having seen the diningroom in daylight!
It's very tired and scruffy, although I suppose that candlelight, and a few drinks does somewhat disguise things in the evening.
I noticed that the evening meal prices were in the same pricerange as the new JAMIE (Oliver) ITALIAN restaurant in Cardiff !
Go across the road to The RAILWAY Pub and eat there if you are hungry and on a budget. The pints there are also cheaper.

The Glendales rooms are tired and dirty. Somewhat cleaner than we experienced on a previous trip. Though not much!
The bedroom windows were a horror in windy conditions.
Don't sleep in a bed close to a window unless you are considering becoming a Polar Explorer.

The shower (one of those without a thermostat and activated by the infamous 'pullup' knob from the bath taps) was IMPOSSIBLE to tame and either scolded you or made you think that you were at the North Pole. In another room close by it was impossible to get any HOT water. Room cleaning was something that the 'young lad from ??? ' had not quite mastered. Making beds was obviously not something he had learned from his mother and was for him just a question of throwing the bedcover over the already rumpled sheets. Forget about getting your pillows plumped up - they lie undisturbed just like you left them. Topping up of teabags/milk/coffee is also something that he is not yet used to doing. Still he might learn to do it before you go there - if you dare!

The staff are superfriendly but the whole place needs a complete makeover!.

Friends booked me into the Glendale some months ago as a convenient place to stay for a wedding. The "hotel" is a disgrace and reminds me of some dump I was forced to stay at in Belgium in the 1950's. When checking in I found we were booked into the "garden room" a euphenism for the cellar - dark, dank and dingy and no alternative room to move to. At first, the lights didn't work and the TV never did. The mystery "hissing" noise in the night was caused by an industrial sized air freshener hidden under the sink - no doubt to mask the smell of damp. Getting into the strangely elevated shower, and all soaped up, the shower went cold. Not amused as we were getting ready to go to the wedding. Peter OJ (2007) reported stained bed covers and Fuffy Bunny (2008) reported hair in the shower. Yes guys - it's all still there!! So is the toilet in the fire exit corridor whre you can only sit on the loo with the door open!

Had argument with Franco over his joke hotel and instantly moved to new room in the attic - no damp but very cramped. Cancelled third night in disgust and only paid £25 for the first night. Even so, "hotel" overpriced for what is basically an old seaside B&B.

Fair do though - The restaurant meals were good even if the surroundings are outdated and in need of brightening up. Staff generally good and attentive.

Agree with other comments - stay somewhere else. Glendale would improve dramatically from complete demolition in a slum clearance programme.

The hotel was choosen due to being close to a friends house and was our only option of a B&B in the penarth local area that wasn't booked up.

The people at check in were pleasent. However our bedroom was down in the cellar! it had clean sheets and towels but the rest was rather nasty!

The highlight of the room was finding a used bar of soap in the shower covered with bits of some one elses hair! Not Nice!

There was no toilet in the bedroom, but across th hall way... you could hardly sit on the toilet as your knees were squashed up against the door!

We didn't even attempt to try the breakfast so no comment there!

Would only recmmend this B&B as a last resort! It is definalty not worth £60 a night!

It could be a beauitful place if it was totally gutted and modernised!

Me and six friends used this hotel as a base for a recent fishing trip. We booked up at least six months in advance. When we arrived they were using the front of hotel for a film shoot, and was closed. The locals said it was Torch Wood being filmed. Our room was quite large, the television had a very poor picture as it only worked of the loop arial, the bedside lamp did not work, the plumbing was very noisy, it took several flushes of the toilet for it to work. The breakfast was good, but on the first morning we could not use the restaurant because of all the film crew etc. When we tried to pay the bill, we were told there was an increase because we had a family room instead of the double single room we had asked for, we argued the point as this was not the room we asked for. He then said that there was an extra charge because of the boxing that was on during the weekend. I informed him that we had booked up six months previously and that the match was on Saturday, our first night was on Sunday. He then said that we were being charged for a weekend rate. We said that we stayed from Sunday night, and when we booked they said it was a fixed price, and was the same all week (as confirmed when you have a look at the prices on various other pages advertising their hotel). I think that he knew that he was not going to win, and said that he was going to see the person who had given us the wrong price. I asked what time the manager was around and was told it was 10am. I could not wait 2 hours, so I paid the bill (and no extra charges) and left. Next time I will stay in the Travel Lodge, only a stones throw away.

Just returned from a weekend in Penarth, S. Wales and had the misfortune to have stayed in The Glendale Hotel. We had to visit family urgently and, unfortunately, due to The Police concert in Cardiff, this was the only vacancy we could find. Had this not been the case we would quite happily of returned home.

The room we were allocated was damp and dirty, some of the bedding was stained (although the sheets and towels were clean) and one of the beds was propped up by bricks!! The bathroom was damp and mouldy , the shower curtain was disgusting, the toilet moved and the bath, a cast iron avocado coloured suite, was chipped in numerous places.

All the public rooms including the restaurant were breakfast was served were dark and dingy and looked old fashioned and dirty. The pot of tea served with the breakfast was cold - it was possible to get hotter water out of a tap.

This hotel is vastly over-priced and needs a complete refurbishment and, until that is done, I would recommed that people DO NOT stay here no matter how desperate they are.
