“Piece of History”
Reviewed 13 August 2013

This home is part of the National Park Service & is worth a visit. As we are Johnson's my husband especially enjoyed this stop. There are lots of beautiful homes to visit in Natchez but this one gives you the prospective of a freed man of color's life in that time period. And the fact that there is no entrance fee there is no reason not to add it to your itinerary of Natchez.

“This gives a different view of Natchez”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

This is one of the highlights of Natchez because it focuses on an aspect of the town other than the magnificant town and plantation houses. This shows more of what the real antebellum South was than all of the beautiful plantation/toen homes.

“Outstanding Park/Homes”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

Toured both Melrose and Johnson House while in Natchez for a day. The National Park service interprets both facilities. The visitors center at Melrose is very small and does not offer a great deal of interpretation but the Rangers are very helpful if you have questions. The slave quarters at Melrose are open and contain a very good slavery exhibit. The Johnson house has an excellent museum along with the living quarters tour. Kids earned their Junior Ranger badges at Natchez and learned a great deal.

Liked the layout and walking trails. Also like the little gift shop. My husband and I enjoyed it very much.

“William Johnson House”
Reviewed 29 May 2013

This was another Natchez National Park site well worth the visit. Wiliam Johnson started life as a slave, was freed, and worked as a barber, eventually owning several barber shops. This is the house he lived in with his family. It was free to visit, and is interesting to see the furnishings and decor from the era.
