“Very elegant place to stay”
Reviewed 27 May 2011

We had one night at the Monmouth Plantation and had booked through Expedia and been allocated the Honeymoon Suite -and how plush it was, even greeting us with a bottle of champagne.

The grounds were beautiful and we came across a local man and his two daughters fishing in the lake which was just great to see, so glad they hadn't been ousted as many of these hotels do in the UK.

We ate at the restaurant in the evening choosing the 5 course set menu and the food was delicious which was a good job because the restaurant not only lacked people but style.

The wifi in the main house where we were staying didn't work at all and though we reported it nothing seemed to be done and no-one came to update us so we walked to other areas to find connection. The breakfast was disappointing. The tour of the house even more so because we'd seen all the rooms they showed us the night before, some history though which was well told.

I have stayed at countless Bed and Breakfast Inn's all over the United States and this is one of the finest. This is an historic building that has been lovingly restored to it grandeur. The rooms are amazing with four poster beds and wonderful historic furnishings. The lounge is a wonderplace for an afternoon Mint Juliep served by Roosevelt using his secret recipe. The dinner at the 1818 restaurant is pure rommance. Held in the parlor of the mansion. The food is amazing and a great value for the 5 course taste of the South. Natchez is a wonderful town to discover and there is no better place to begin the discovery than the Monmouth Plantation

Room Tip: Stay in the main house for the true experience

We were upgraded to a suite and it was very comfortable & quiet & had a spa bath which was a pleasant surprise. The bathroom wallpaper was peeling at the edges a bit but they supplied every amenity including talc & mosi spray.
The walk to the main building involved a shingle path and uneven paving. Not necessarily a problem for us but not a place for heels! I made the mistake of thinking the 'Nibbles' were served from 5pm so we went for a drink then and nothing materialised in the time we were there. When we got back to the room I found that it was from 5.30 but I'm sure we were still there then as it was lovely and warm sitting in the courtyard.
The dinner in 1818 was delicious & beautifully presented if a bit pricey.
Breakfast was also very nice and the room was very pleasant with a fireplace and also an outdoor area.
A house tour is included in the price at 10am the following morning, as they only offer one tour a day - so don't plan to leave before 10.30!
It's now a stunning property but evidently has a chequered past and was once virtually derelict.
If you arrive travelling on 61N, using a GPS, it will say 'You have reached your destination' but it won't be obvious! Take a left at the light on 61N & you will see it, on the left, right at that intersection. It needs better signage from the road however it's well worth the search.

It's the people working at Monmouth who make this hotel a great experience. The service they provide, from the delicious food to the bar service, breakfast service and the cleanliness and utility of the room, is impeccable. Roosevelt, Carlton and the whole crew know how to provide warm hospitality and professional service. Of course the building is impressive, as are the immaculately kept surroundings, but I would rate this hotel with the best hotels I have stayed in around the world. Well done Ron, your care and interest in the hotel and its people show through.

We stayed in a Deluxe Room - in a Cottage Garden room. While it was large and nicely decorated - it was a tad dark for me - seemed to have only one window near the door in the bedroom and that was under a porch. Breakfast was in a nice location - however the food wasn't anything special. The grounds of the plantation were very nice. We did the tour of the house - very nice too. Great location for exploring the area - easy drive to Vicksburg. Was out of town - had to drive downtown for meals.

First, be not deceived. Monmouth is a civil war plantation. It was owned and run by a slave owner. But the people who run this resort are forthcoming about that. There is no attempt to cover up the grimy details. Its a beautiful place from a sad bit of history in our country. We considered that before we stayed but we had business in the area and needed a break. We considered that as we stayed and talk about it a lot. We finally decided to consider it as much learning experience as vacation and that worked very well. We had the chance to soak in history in and around Natchez, we had the chance to meet some great people, we had a lovely time and yes, we learned a lot.

The resort itself is peaceful and the staff is willing to chat with you, take some time and talk about the history of the place. There are other historical sites around and they were kind enough to direct us to places of interest. The rooms are stunning and quiet. The service is second to none. There is plenty to see and to do and ... plenty to learn. Lots and lots of history.

Now the food. Chef Eric Sibley is a gem. A delightful person with an amazing amount of culinary ability. The dishes he created a singular. You'll not have this dining experience anywhere else in the country. We ate there for dinner TWICE when we could have easily tried other restaurants. Why bother? It was just that good. Chef Mary B. Taylor serves southern sunshine on a plate at breakfast. You have to have breakfast there to get the full story so please don't skip it. See mary for Breakfast, have a lite snack at lunch and come back for Chef Eric's dinner. The perfect foodie day.

So visit, stay, relax, enjoy and learn. That's what we did and we plan to go back soon. Its worth your while.

Room Tip: Get breakfast with your room.

We are staying at Monmouth Plantation for the first time and it is truly a beautiful place. We have found the staff to be very hospitable and helpful. The rooms. Are large and we were able to spend ine night in the Quitman Retreat. Which is absolutely magnificent with our own pond and fountain right in front of of cottage.
There is a very nice restaurant in the main plantation and the food is very good. Unfortunately, we ate there when there was a tour dining that evening and the noise was beyond belief, but I think it would be very romantic under better circumstances. It's location is very good for touring the beautiful mansions of Natchez and also very convenient to other eateries. It is definitely among the best of what Natchez has to offer.
