“A dream became reality”
Reviewed 29 July 2008

when I was a girl, just after WW II, my father Wilhelm Quitmann told me about the general and politician John Anthony Quitman, who lived at that time100 years ago in Natchez in a beautiful mansion and who was a relative of our Quitmann family. Since then it was my dream to see his home, which is today one of the most beautiful small hotels of America.

Many years later I founded together with other Quitmanns in Germany our “Familyresearch Quitmann Quitman Quittmann” and came into contact with the present owners of Monmouth, Ron and Lani Riches. Finally 16 of us could afford to come to a Quitman-Family_Reunion at the 17th of July, 2008, the 150th aniversary of the day of his death of our relative John Anthony Quitman. Not only the beautiful building and the charming appartments, not only the wonderful garden and the excellent food and the way how it was served have elated us but also the incomparable atmosphere which the owners Lani and Ron Riches and their staff create. Everybody felt immediately at home and was impressed by the way everybody of the staff treated the guests. We all wish to come back one day to Monmouth and we can only highly recommend to others to select this hotel for an exceptional stay.

We have just returned from a perfect stay at Monmouth Plantation. We first learnt about this hotel on a previous trip to New Orleans/Baton Rouge. Once you see the Hotel on their web sight you will fall in love with it and it is just as perfect when you get there. We stayed in one of the Antebellum rooms, with period fixtures fron the early/mid 1800's, the combination of history and luxury is stunning. The silent aircon is brilliant ( why can't all hotels have this??!! ). The staff were wonderful. From the moment you are welcomed by Hal you know that your stay will be something special. Don't forget to get Peggy to give you a tour of the mansion, she is so knowledgeable and such a wonderful hostess. Don't bother eating out in the evening in Natchez, the restaurants will only dissapoint descerning dinners. The food at Monmouth is very good and the embience of eating in the mansion is very special. Although no pool, the gardens are beautiful and the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon with a good book.

Simply one of the most beautiful places my wife and i have ever stayed in. We used one of the suites, which was really well furnished The hotel grounds are stunning in summer, the staff are super helpful. If in Natchez, you must look at staying here. A pleasure. In town, the the Pig Out (as recommended by the hotel staff) is one of the great places to eat in the county.

Monmouth Plantation is a beautiful and relaxing bed and breakfast. From the moment we arrived the staff was there to show us around and provided incredible service. They always had a smile for you. The cottage was beautifully decorated and spotless. The food is plentiful and delicous. There is a cocktail hour before you are called in for dinner. Dinner was relaxing and again the service was the best. My only regret is I didn't have more time to spend there. There is so much to see and do at Monmouth and in the town of Natchez.

We have just visited Monmouth Plantation for 4 days. It felt like royalty. The hotel embraces so much of the history of Natchez that it gives you a feeling of stepping back in time.
The room exerted an opulent atmosphere of graciousness with its authentic pieces of furniture. It combined heritage with modern convenience. Sleeping in a canopy bed in a comfortably air conditioned room that offers a wireless connection felt like having the best of both worlds.
We had dinner two nights in a row at the main house. The food was five stars by international standards. The staff pampered us from the start of the cocktail hour to the coffee and dessert at the conclusion of dinner. We got to meet wonderful people, some who stayed at the hotel like us and others who flocked in from other locations, all sharing their excitement about the famous, elegant Monmouth dinner.
For the history fans among you, Natchez offers a great glimpse into the history of the South. Staying at Monmouth, touring other plantations and visiting the house of the first slave set free in America, all make a unique experience.
We strongly recommend Natchez and its gem, Monmouth Plantation.

First impressions are alway important. Needless to say our first impression was spectacular. From the moment we arrived to time we left we were treated as family. Other members of my family have been here repeatedly and encouraged us to go. We were not dissappointed. We will also recommend Monmouth to all. The accomondations exceeded our highest expectations. The best treasures at Monmouth are the wonderful staff, George, Hal, Roosevelt, Lili, etc. The grounds and accomondations were luxurious and beautiful. It is liking stepping back in time.
We will be back !!!!!!!!!

Natchez, MS is a special place. Largely spared by the Civil War, the town is home to the most intact collection of antebellum homes and structures in the South.

Monmouth Plantation is the gold standard of lodging in this place "where the Old South still lives." It has received great acclaim from Conde Nast Traveler, Travel + Leisure, Zagat and many other top-tier travel publications.

These accolades are well-deserved. Monmouth Plantation is not your everyday hotel, not even among four or five star ones. The whole property is almost magically transporting, and everyone, both staff and guests, seem genuinely happy to be there.

Owners Lani and Ron Riches spend half their time living on the property, overseeing its continuous improvement and making better the plantation they have owned since 1978. Monmouth was the home of Gen. John A. Quitman--decorated hero of the Mexican War, governor of Mississippi, U.S. congressman--and no doubt his spirit rests easier knowing that his home and its environs shine again under the Riches' careful domain.

Our room was in the delightful Pond Cottage with an ornate canopied bed, antique reproduction furnishings, fireplace and jacuzzi tub. Rooms are located in the main house and in other buildings throughout the property. The Pond Cottage allowed for a private accomodation, yet it was close to the main house.

Dinner at Monmouth was a fabulous occasion complete with gas-light chandeliers, candlelight and flowers. The five courses, all delicious, were presented with grace and flair. The full Southern breakfasts, served to guests each morning in a building off the garden, was another treat, with homemade biscuits and grits.

The Riches have assembled a superb staff--Roosevelt, Hal and Peggy among them--who perform their jobs with a sincere love and dedication to guests that shows. The true enthusiasm of the staff along with the storybook surroundings make Monmouth what it is.

Monmouth is a destination unto itself, along with all of Natchez, and it is worth a special trip. You won't be disappointed.
