“Breakfast in the cafe, lunch in the field”
Reviewed 24 August 2014

During a three-week trip through the Maritime Provinces my wife and I stayed three nights at the Rosedale Manor, the B&B associated with Philip's Cafe. Our breakfast was at the restaurant, a short walk up the road. The atmosphere was cheery, the service and conversation hospitable and the food excellent. If ever there was a "destination" breakfast restaurant Philip's fills the bill. I had a slice of quiche that resembled a soufflé along with fruit, lovely baked goods and the best coffee I had during our entire trip.

The second day we ordered box lunchs to take on our excursion to a Northern Gannet rookery (we are birders and spend most days outdoors). We had hearty sandwiches with fruit and just-baked cookies. As we sat on a bench in the middle of a sheep's pasture overlooking the sea I thought how very lucky we were to have met Philip and Linda, owners of the B&B, cafe combination.

If ever we return to Newfoundland, I'll include a visit to Philip's on our itinerary.

Reviewed 24 August 2014

Walked in on a Sunday early noon and chose the Breakfast Sandwich with egg, ham, green onion, and the Pièce de résistance was the Molasses raisin bread you could put it on. Holy frig batman it was delicious!

“Homemade, healthy, friendly”
Reviewed 14 August 2014 via mobile

We were really happy we stopped in for a breakfast. Not only were the fish cakes big and delicious and gluten free, his homemade gluten free bread was not the usual dry fare. It was moist and tasty as was my husband's homemade whole wheat bread which he enjoyed with his freshly baked ham from his mothers recipe served with eggs and potato cake. The menu is varied with chili, soups, salads and deserts. They are all homemade and healthy. His eyes sparkled when he explained his blueberry porridge made with fresh blueberries, flax seeds and hemp hearts. There was a great almond and chocolate bar for me that was gluten free and a delicious rhubard "ting" for my husband. He has even created a beautifully scented soap made with essential oils for those who are sensitive to perfumes. What really made the experience truly memorable, was the time he took to come out of the kitchen to talk to us. The talk continued to include others in the restaurant until it felt like we were meeting up with old friends. Thank you Phillip. I will return every time I come to Newfoundland.

“Good, easy food”
Reviewed 8 August 2014

Our tour was behind schedule on the day, and we arrived at Philip's in Placentia five minutes before the nominal closing time. Philip, who is the owner, chef, and a great guy, reopened the grill and kept his staff working so that he could serve the 20 of us. It was simple comfort-food entrees, soups, and sandwiches, Including vegetarian. And good beer. And organic ginger & chocolate cookies to die for. We enjoyed ourselves enormously, and although probability suggests we will never be back to Placentia, we would go back to Philip's in a heartbeat.

“Breakfast”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

Best restaurant breakfast I have ever had. WE even ate desert and that was awesome too. Well worth the time to drive from St. John's or surrounding area. Philip and his wife are also very congenial and happy to share their story on the history of the cafe, which at one time was Placentia's General Store.
