We were very impressed with the lovely, well maintained, artistically presented gardens. The chapel appears to be constructed onto rocks and set in the middle of a large pond. It is hard to give enough praise for the beautiful and lush foliage. There are sculptures and paintings strategically placed inside and out. The entry area, ballroom area and various gardens display more and more Hawaiian flowers, trees, palm trees and art work. None of that needs anything but your eyes and camera. What does need more attention are the hotel guest rooms. They need updating, upgrading, deep cleaning and repairs. The ocean view and ocean front rooms have spectacular views of the ocean and grounds. For such expensive accommodations, I hope the management decides to renovate. No need to touch the grand lobby area as it is really fabulous! Unless you are a relatively new couple, honeymooning or not interested in the beauty of Hawaii, most of the time will not be spent in the room, so that saved us from focusing too much on the worn and somewhat dated room appearance. The bed sleeps well, the bathrooms are spacious and our patio facing the ocean was wonderful to use.

Room Tip: Choose ocean view, ocean front or a villa.

We really appreciated all of the reviews on this website when planning our trip to Maui, so I thought that I would share our experience with others. Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly:

The Good

Excellent location. Fabulous beach with (hot) velvety, tan sand. Turquoise water. Great snorkeling on either end of this small, quiet beach. We saw several sea turtles. Centrally located on a walking path that runs along the shore that was good for exercising and traveling to destinations. Convenient access to fantastic restaurants and shops. The rooms (including bathrooms) are big. For the most part, friendly and helpful employees. Housekeeping serviced the rooms twice a day. Great onsite restaurants (Humu was our second favorite on the island). Nice workout facilities.

The Bad

Everything was REALLY expensive. $30 daily brunch. $22 drinks at the pool. $30/valet only parking (plus tips). $25/day resort fee. The WIFI had lots of problems. The furniture in the rooms looked and seemed old: a metal drawer pull broke in half during our stay. Some of the rooms have balconies that are next door to each other and diagonal at the same time. People on those balconies can see right in your room.

The Ugly

We specifically chose this hotel because we wanted an ocean view room and they had one available. Had they not, we would have stayed elsewhere. This was important to us. When we checked in and looked out the window of our third floor room (room number 3024), the attached picture was our view. We could see the chapel, trees, garden, and the pool areas around the chapel. If we went to the very corner of our room or balcony and looked diagonally across other people's balconies, we could barely see a little ocean. In contrast, this is the picture that the Grand Waliea shows on its website of an Ocean Room: http://www.grandwailea.com/pages/vacation-and-getaways/accommodations/guest-rooms/ocean-room.html. Our view was not even as good as what they show is a Deluxe Garden: http://www.grandwailea.com/pages/vacation-and-getaways/accommodations/guest-rooms/deluxe-garden.html. When I called to question our room assignment, I was told that we were put in an Ocean Room and that those rooms may have some obstruction (I heard this several times from several different GW staff members). I explained that I would understand SOME obstruction but that I expected to be able to look out my window and see the ocean. I suggested that they reclassify room number 3024 to a garden view room, but I did not get the impression that my suggestion would get much consideration. We were told that we could move on Monday (two days after we checked in) to a room on the 9th floor. However, the process of changing rooms was very inconvenient and we were given the run around about when the room would be ready which ended up disrupting our plans for that day.

Overall, the Grand Wailea was a nice resort for the most part. It showing its age in many ways and is expensive. If a particular view (or getting what you paid for) is important to you, I would stay someplace else. If we go back to Maui, we will seriously consider spending the extra money and staying next door at the Four Seasons.

This resort is beautiful. It certainly does not deserve all of the bad reviews it has received. If you are looking for an intimate resort, this isn't for you, as it is truly a large hotel which accommodates 1000+ guests. The pools were beautiful, definitely a wonderland for kids. There is also a separate adult pool. I did not see any kids near the adult pool, so if you aren't looking to be in the area with the slides, this is a relaxing alternative. The water slides were a lot of fun. We didn't experience the chaos that other reviewers described. We had no problems finding seating by the pool, on the beach or in the restaurants. The view from our room was incredible. We had an ocean view room in the lagoon wing and could easily hear the ocean from our bed. The employees were kind and helpful. The only thing that wasn't great was the food -- it was just ok. This is definitely a great place for families.

Room Tip: Lagoon Wing is close to pools.

We recently stayed at the Grand Wailea with my company for a sales incentive trip. The property is beautiful and the grounds were expansive with many choices for pools and activities. We did not bring our kids on this trip, but I could tell that they would have loved it - lots of slides and kids running around in their own personal heaven.

The overall property was a bit dated - not in a way that took you straight back to the 80's, but just seemed like it could use a little love. The rooms were nice and big, and we were on the top floor so we had an incredible view of the ocean. However, to get from our room to the beach was a haul, as we had to go down the elevator, wind through the hotel, wander through the grounds (not really a straight path anywhere), and then finally end up at the beach. It is definitely a HUGE property, which is I'm sure why it was a plus for our company booking a large group.

We thought the Humu and Amasia restaurants were delicious, but the other food seemed very mediocre (bar food, breakfast/brunch at the main restaurant, etc.)

The location was great on the island - not that far from the airport, and an easy drive north to Lahaina or Kaanapali. Wailea is a beautiful area with a very nice shopping center and great restaurants. Our favorite resort here, the Four Seasons, is literally right next door to the GW and you can walk 2 minutes on the beach to go eat there. We love Ferraro's next door - great food and beautiful view!

My husband played the Wailea "Old Blue" golf course and thought it was fantastic. It is the original course - the Gold and Emerald courses were newer and had a much nicer clubhouse.

The spa was probably the highlight of the stay. I'm not much of a spa person, but this place was amazing with their "Terme" water circuit before your appointment. Advice for the ladies - bring your bathing suit!

If we were coming back to Maui and bringing the kids, we would probably stay here again. If it were just my husband and I, we would probably opt for the Four Seasons next door. Still, a delightful stay and a wonderful trip.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor - that way you see over the building in between you and the beach.

Great view and hotel.. We a room in the tower. The service was great and Jeff at the concierge desk was most helpful with a tours and plans. We used the pools and the 11 year loved them. We had dinner at Amasa and this was awesome. The pools with the fish are fun for the kids to feed. The luau was fun for our daughter... The sheets and pillows where wonderful..

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the tower club rooms and services..

It's a Waldorf, it is a nice hotel and property, but it is not exceptional. Everything on this property is overpriced. It does have a nice large family-based pool, rope swing, water slides, water elevator (unique), waterfalls, hot tubs, and an adult pool (the adults looked bored). The resort fee gets you access to the pool and a couple of other activities, but agree as others have said, the resort fee (as it is required) should be included in the reservation fee. No one on site especially helpful though most pleasant (realize, 780 rooms and most are generally booked - there are a lot of people present on the property). The room was fine, we were a family of 4, but would have liked another chair in the room. We ventured off of the property much, minimized eating at hotel (way too much for what you get and much less expensive elsewhere if you care to explore), and used the pool between activities. Oceanfront beach was nice, especially later in day. Gardens around hotel very nice, and lots of space to walk around the property. And the option to use a hospitality suite at the end of our stay (after checking out but still using the hotel) is a nice benefit. Being able to clean up prior to departing is appreciated.
