“Exceptional Resort, But...”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

My family and I just returned from a 6-night stay at the Grand Wailea. Talk about a breathtaking and sprawling resort! It was gorgeous! Our room came with 2 luxurious queen beds, a HUGE bathroom, and large lanai that overlooked the beautiful gardens and the ocean. Truly picturesque. The pool areas alone were A-MAZING! Lots of water slides, which I didn't hesitate to go on...such fun! However, the main issue with the pool area is that if you didn't get down to them fairly early in the morning, all the lounge chairs will be taken. The problem, I think, is that folks would leave their towels draped on them, even though they had left, but there was no way of knowing that was the case. We had to walk around several mins. looking for empty chairs...sometimes we were lucky, other times, we weren't. it was hit and miss. The beach is easy to access from the pool areas and was so beautiful! The rocky shoreline off to the left side of the property was awesome for snorkeling. We saw several HUGE sea turtles there, as well as other incredible sea life. The biggest gripe I have about the Grand Wailea is that you don't have the option of self-parking your car. You have to use valet parking. We felt obligated to tip the valets $2-3 each time they retrieved our car for us, which added up quickly with as much sight-seeing as we did. We went to the Big Island 4 years ago and stayed at Waikoloa Village and you could self-park. Just wish the same was true of the Grand Wailea. Would I go back? Probably so, but just be prepared to be nickled and dimed to death.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room...you won't regret it!

Stayed here for 3 nights to end our Maui holiday - wish we had stayed longer! We were amazed when we came through the entrance into the lobby and were greeted by such friendly staff. Check in was fast and easy. We were expecting a room facing the back of the hotel as we had paid for a Garden View room which at most hotels would mean facing the car park, but were amazed to see that it faced the chapel, lovely gardens and we could see the beautiful water! It was closer to the beach than the actual ocean view rooms. The room was spacious and we were particularly impressed with the large bathroom. We were close to the beach and adults pool which was awesome. The beds were so comfy! It was like sleeping on a cloud. We also loved how housekeeping came twice a day and turned the bed down. During the day we had so much fun - the pool rivers, slides, volleyball, swing and elevator. There is so much to do at the hotel. It is the centre of all the action in Wailea, a great place for families in particular. You can hang around all day at the numerous pools and the beach. The beach itself is nice although we prefer Kaanapali beach and Wailea was a bit windy. If you have a car then there are heaps of cool places you can visit nearby to see or eat at. The food here is good but very expensive so we went to Kihei for a couple of nights for dinner. On the last night we went to Humus and had the best steak I have ever had. Cafe Kula was convenient for breakfast and snacks everyday. The buffet breakfast was average but the best part was looking out over the water feature and grounds to the beach. From start to finish the staff were polite and helpful, the people on the towel kiosk in particular were genuinely friendly. The valet staff were really nice aswell and always put water bottles in the car. We would never usually spend this much on a room, but we did have an unforgettable experience. Everything at this hotel is expensive, it all adds up! $30 per day for valet parking plus $25 for the resort fee. However it is the Waldorf Astoria brand so thats what prices to expect. Although expensive it was definitely our best holiday experience! We would recommend to all families who can afford it. This was truly a grand vacation and will be returning again in future for sure.

Had a great time here 13 years ago and it's only improved on this most recent visit.
Brought our 9 and 14 year old daughters on this trip and there was plenty for them to do on-site. Customer service was incredible and our ocean view room was clean and comfortable.
If driving a rental car, note that there is only valet parking at hotel.
We learned from two different families that you can get discounted tickets (25%off) for many local attractions such as parasailing, snorkeling and luau's. There's even a Costco's just minutes from Maui's airport.

Room Tip: Ocean view rooms are worth it. Truly breath-taking views. We were on 6th floor.

We found the Grand Wailea fantastic for our young family (9, 7, 5, 3). The water slides were great fun and there was something for all the girls to have fun on. The older girls got the chance to be independent and go off by themselves and do the bigger slides on their own. The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurants were very family friendly and accommodating to all our needs. Our rooms were spacious and well appointed. The kids club was fantastic and our girls absolutely loved it. We are not a big kids club family so the fact the girls loved it was testament to the great staff and all the different activities like catching crabs at night to a behind the scenes tour of the hotel. Overall a great holiday and the restaurant options at the neighbouring hotels and shopping mall meant that you always had lots of choices.

Room Tip: The rooms off the ground floor seem quieter. We were part of the Grand Wailea membership which gave...

Just as I'd remembered only better. Nice soft goods upgrades to the guest rooms; same great family pools and beach experience. Work out facilities are good quality and spa is not to be missed. Highly recommend.

We had high expectations, having stayed at El Conqistador at Puerto Rico. We stayed there for four nights with our two kids and nothing stood out as any exceptional. This resort is located on a nice beach though with a lot of activities for the whole family.
The Staff -- Totally indifferent and incompetent. The lady who checked us in should not be in this industry. No greetings, no orientation given. We are HHonors Gold and typically get a room upgrade without asking. In this resort we booked Deluxe OceanView but instead downgraded to room 8017 which I believe was a partial ocean view. The lady at the check-in did not smile at all ! The staff at restaurants take forever to acknowledge you and your needs. The service is S...L...O...W.... We waited for our order for 40 minutes and had to walk away as we were running short on time to go to the airport.

The bell guys and the Valet parking staff was good though. Only saving grace for this resort.

This is an expensive resort. The Cafe Kula sells $4 small water bottles and the next door gift shop sells the same bottle for $2.50. One Advil pill is $1.99. Ripoffs at its best.

While staying there I learned that this resort went through bankruptcy recently and was bought over by a foreign entity. This might be playing there on employee morale.

The resort also has limited elevator access. We had to walk quite a bit to get to the closest elevator.

I would not stay in this resort ever.

Room Tip: Rooms near to the pools OR on the high floors. Check out Napua tower rooms. They seem to be better l...

We knew from the second we arrived we were in a Hawaiian paradise. The Grand entrance is stunning and makes you know you are in Hawaii. The service was good. The property is beautiful and everything you see in the movies. The room was adequate and bed and bedding good enough. The pool is a blast (Even for my group of a 29, 23, 22 year old) We had no kids and still had a blast going down the slides and riding the lazy river. The beach is great and the water was very calm. The only complaint I had was that it was too crowded at the beach and pool. If you wanted to go out for an activity in the morning you will not be able to get an umbrella at the beach or a pool chair around the pool area. We also spent 4 days at the Andaz and if we return to Maui we will be staying at the Grand Wailea if possible.
