I had booked this trip almost one year ago. Every year my husband and I take our daughter, son in law and 3 granddaughters (14,11,7) on a vacation after school ends. We have been to Maui many times - and have stayed at Napili Kai Beach Resort, which is very nice but as the girls get older they need more things to do. So after much research and reviews from Trip Advisor, I choose Kea Lani in Wailai.
I am always nervous about my choices and I did a lot of research.
We stayed in a 3 bedroom ocean front villa (which they upgraded us from ocean view). It is a spectacular layout and perfect for our family. Two sets of adults had their own bedroom and the girls had a two queen bed room. Lots of closet space and two lovely bathrooms. Although another bathroom would have been perfect for the the 3 granddaughters. But we all had our privacy and a living room/kitchen, fabulous patio overlooking the ocean and a plunge pool. It was ideal.
The hotel is perfect. Loved the restaurants - spent afternoons at the upper pool having food and drink delivered. The staff at the upper pool were wonderful - took excellent care of us. Tricia, Gyson and Josh were outstanding. Keoni, the manager was very attentive and caring.
The kids loved the water slide and just hanging out at the pool.
The beach is lovely. We snorkeled and swam and built a fabulous sand castle.
Yes, it is expensive - yes the food and drink get you - but we came prepared and enjoyed every moment.
Would we come back - YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In fact, I am hoping they contact me and offer me the same for next year.
I must also say, the staff everywhere is so nice.
Consierge/front desk/valet/shuttle/housekeeping people all outstanding.
Thank you Kea Lani
We had a wonderful time.

The Fairmont Kea Lani is a fantastic!! The rooms are decent, food is excellent, staff is friendly, and the location is breath taking. You have the choice of many pools, the ocean, and many lounge areas. Nick's is one of the best seafood restaurants in the world! And the lobby bar at sunset is pretty amazing too!! Highly recommend this place!!

My review is based on the fact we are paying $700+ a night for a suite. If I was paying like $200-300, I'd have less negative things to say.

Pros:
- curb appeal is amazing. The lobby is beautiful, spotless, spacious, open to the outside.
- check in very efficient, lots of explanation of the upgrade opptys, which is OK with me
- great location, great views for Ocean View type of room.
- service from concierge is excellent in helping you to book tours.
- the Yoga instructor was good, session fun and energizing.
- the management made a very nice display in our bedroom because it was my wifes birthday one day. Very nicely done and unexpected.
- Suite is very clean, spacious, everything works. Fantastic view from room 572.

Negatives:
- the pool area and beach area is a disaster. Nobody appears to be cleaning the place up, nor taking down old towels. At the beach was a hotel towel all wet and sanded up in the turf just being ignored. I didn't see a single staff person on the beach.
- food is EXPENSIVE as you can't imagine. Lunch for four was $125 at the poolside bar. $125!
- service at the breakfast restaurant was unimaginably slow. We sat down at 10am, and didn't get waited until like 10:15 at all (no coffee, no water, no site of any assistance), and then didn't get served until 10:45. Food was Good though. Coffee ok, but I could tell it was a bit watered down, though they did leave a nice thermos carafe at the table.
- there was lipstick on my water glass. Freaking gross.
- even more gross: tons of birds all over the un-bussed tables, eating scraps. NOT SANITARY people! You blink and the birds might get brave enough to snatch your food.
- fitness center is way too small for this size property. Needs to be about 2x the size.

Overall, I will never come back. We did come on recommendation of several friends who've been here. But at $700+ a nite, you might as well try the Four Seasons next door for another $300 a night. You'll likely get 2x the value for 50% more in room rate, I suspect.

I think it's management that's the problem. I travel all over the world, and I can tell you that China 5 star hotels (which are really like 3-4 star hotels) do better than this place.

So a mix of good and bads, but seriously we come to Maui to enjoy the beach and the beach thing here is just not appealing. We all thought the same immediately upon hitting the beach and pool area.

But we'll never know, as we'll never come back. We'll rent a house next time, that truly seems to be the right thing to do in HI.

Room Tip: Even the land side view would be awesome as you are looking up at Haleakala crater I believe. It'...

Aloha and thank you for your honest review. While we're pleased to learn that you enjoyed some aspects of your visit, it’s tremendously disappointing to learn that others had such a negative effect on your experience. We sincerely apologize that you felt the cleanliness and service was not up to par, as both areas are of top priority for our team. We also recognize that the birds at breakfast can be a nuisance. Please be assured that we take every effort to manage their presence so as not to distract from the dining experience. All your comments have been promptly addressed with the appropriate departments and we will implore changes based on your review. Again, we’re truly sorry for falling short and hope you will return in the future so we can provide the five-star luxury experience you deserve. Mahalo and best wishes.

Once again, the staff of the Fairmont Kea Lani, gave our family the warmest welcome. Our family of 12 have been gathering at the Kea Lani for our annual family reunion since 2006. It was wonderful to see that the Kea Lani still beautifully maintained with spacious lawns for our young grandchildren to play and run, a great beach, and enough other amenities to continually attract our grandchildren from age 5 to 15 yearning to return each year! All the wonderful features mentioned by other reviewers, I totally concur. It is a huge complex yet well designed such that it never felt chaotic. Every morning we swam in the adult pool and later join the grandchildren in the other two pools with water slide. After a scrumptious buffet breakfast, (fabulous omelet by Erwin!) we would take a walk along a paved road alongside the ocean, so beautiful!

For our family, what really makes the Kea Lani special is the staff. They made us feel welcomed and at home with an aloha spirit that continues to bring us back. Fairmont Kea Lani is a huge five star resort and yet the personal attention is almost family-like. Such attention to details started with Ms. Corell in Reservations who this year noticed several errors made by our travel agent prior to our arrival. Then the warmest welcome-back from Front Desk agent like Ronnie to the servers at breakfast and on and on. The old saying that it’s the people that makes the difference is so very true at the Kea Lani.

We met honeymooners, retired folks, young families, and many three generations families like ours. True to the objective stated on the wall in the lobby, the staff of the Kea Lani once again took “events and created memories” for us. Mahalo to the staff of Lea Lani for another memorable reunion.

Room Tip: higher floors have better chance of getting connecting suites
