“3 years in a row and we love it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2009

My family has stayed at the Kea Lani 5 times over the last 3 years and we love it! We have 2 young children and the suites (it's an all-suite hotel) are perfect for a family. The bathrooms are huge with a huge tub. I recommend to pick up some food & drinks from Safeway and store it in your mini-fridge. As with every resort in Wailea, the food at the hotel is crazily overpriced, however the hotel has a sandwich/coffee shop that has some good sandwiches for relatively good prices.

*Tip to parents with young children: The bar at the upper pool serves free kids meals at lunch for children under 5 (it may be 4, can't remember the exact age). They don't advertise this too much, but ask the bartender to make sure.

I've never seen the pools overrun with people like at Grand Wailea. Every once in a while you'll get an obnoxious kid, that's why there's an adult pool. The beach is smaller, but less crowded than some of the others in Wailea.

It's free to sign up for the President's club before you go. There are alot of perks including free wireless internet, use of a loaner car, free golf club rental, free use of adidas athletic wear, among other perks.

Overall, in my opinion the Kea Lani is the best value in Wailea. If you want to pay an extra $200/night for someone to spray Evian on you and get free popsicles, then feel free to go to the Four Seasons. But I would rather have the space to spread out and really enjoy my vacation.

We spent 8 nights at the Fairmont with our two children (6,9). The location is great. The resort is on Polo Beach which is a small nice beach, but you can walk to Wailea Beach or drive to Big Beach in Makena. The pool was OK but nothing great - the kids enjoyed it although it seemed crowded at times. The adult pool looked nice but we had kids so we never used it. You have to reserve cabanas by the pool (we didn't), but chairs are free if you can find them. At the beach, umbrellas and boogie boards must be rented but the chairs are free. The grounds are very nice - our kids enjoyed the tiki torch lighting and feeding the Poi fish. The room we had was a suite which was good with children. The bathroom was huge, but lacked privacy (too many mirrors and no separate area for the toilet). The lanai was large and comfortable. We had an Oceanview room on the first floor which overlooked the adult pool and was nice. I wouldn't splurge on more expensive rooms - they showed us the next room rate up which would have added $1200 to our bill and didn't offer any better a view. The hotel appeared to be very clean. Washer/dryers are available for free which was very nice - you just need to buy detergent and bounce sheets. With kids and a long stay, this was beneficial since we could pack less.

The concierge was helpful, but beware that you are paying additional if you book thru the hotel. We realized that when comparing rates with other people at various activities. If you know what you want to do, I suggest booking yourself to save money.

For food, the grill by the upper pool was good and we used it for lunch many days (and the service was very good). We tried Ko's one night and the food was amazing but the service was awful. We did one breakfast but the service was awful and the birds were quite annoying. We used the cafe many days - it is expensive but it was a cheaper alternative for some meals. We did note that cookies that you could get at the grill for $7 were at the cafe for $3.50 which annoyed us once we noticed this.

All in all, the hotel was very nice. The staff is friendly and the location is good. It is expensive, but most of Hawaii is expensive. I wouldn't mind returning, but we would probably opt for a condo in the future so we could cook our meals ourselves.

The Fairmont lives up to its star rating and name - this hotel stay was amazing. I've stayed in quite a few nice hotels and this tops the list. We booked during the first week of June and the island was relatively deserted. The first two days of the stay, we felt as if we had the pools to ourselves.

The staff - hands down the best I've seen. They remember your name and are always there to help. My fiance asked for an upgraded room and they happily obliged at no extra cost. We were put in a giant suite with a wrap around balcony.

The location couldn't be better. Wailea has a very upscale and private feel to it - moreso than the rest of Maui. If you are looking for peace, tranquility, and romance, definitely stay in Wailea and at the Fairmont. Can't wait to my next trip!

This was the final place we stayed on a 2+ week trip to Hawaii. At that point we were tired of being tourists and just wanted to relax. The Kea Lani is lovely. The rooms have separate sitting areas, spacious bathrooms, nice balconies and comfortable beds. The property has lots of open space with absolutely beautiful grounds. The pools are lovely though there are not enough cabanas and people seem to reserve chairs early in the AM--kind of obnoxious, but seems to be the Hawaiian resort thing to do. We ended up renting an umbrella at the beach every day and it was very relaxing.

We ate dinner at Nick's Fish Market and were not wowed, though it was a festive atmosphere. In my memory the prices are about the same for Ko but the atmosphere was a little too low key for the price. If we did it again, we would not have breakfast included. The buffet is overwhelmed by birds who have become very smart. When parents leave their toddlers at the table to return to the buffet the birds sweep in. The birds descend as soon as the table is vacated--whether to leave, greet friends, or return to the buffet. We would have opted for the coffee and breakfast options at the nice little store in the hotel. We ate lunch at the pool bar each day--the staff was delightful and the food very good. In the evening we enjoyed drinks in the lobby bar and wished there had been a food option there. (We loved the restaurant at the Four Seasons--Ferraro's Bar e Ristorante.)

The fitness center was well equipped. One day we were there and the place was scorching. There were many calls to the hotel operator but no a/c. My husband is a runner and enjoyed the path that ran along the beach in front of all of the resort hotels. We also walked the path several times and decided that the Kea Lani was the prettiest and place along the walk. It has a relaxing calmness that we wanted...the other places seemed a little too frenetic.

Also, there were amazing sunsets every night. This is not an option at every hotel!

We have been here 7 times since 1994 and each visit has been excellent. If you can dream it, the Kea Lani will provide it. The rooms and grounds are spotless and the service is prompt and respectful. This truly is a white cloud on Earth. The adult pool is very quiet and the activity pool is full of fun! The front desk will welcome any ideas you have to make your stay as perfect as possible. The food is great, but pricey. Enjoy the breakfast buffet, it has everything fresh and made to order omelettes.

The architecture of this hotel is beautiful--reminiscent of an exotic Eastern palace. The pool is a blast for the kids with a serious water slide (maybe too good--hard to get them out of the pool). The rooms are all suites and very spacious. The view from our room (and even from our floor's elevator lobby) was worth a picture that could be made into a postcard (I will try to post one soon). The service was extremely friendly and attentive.

My wife and I just spent 8 days at the Fairmont and loved it.

The large suites (hotel is all suites) was perfect for a longer stay and the rooms were done well and comfortable.

We didn't eat in the hotel much outside of Nick's Seafood (which was great), as we like to get out and see the area more, but menus looked good and price is what you would expect for a Fairmont.

We don't have kids and while there were a lot at the resort, it was nice that the hotel offers a adults only pool so you can get away a little bit from it all - for those with kids it did look like there were enjoying themselves! Pools and beach were nice, well maintained, and clean.

In short, excellent hotel, staff was nice and helpful, and we will be back!!!!!
