“4 days of birding in a great location”
Reviewed 16 January 2014 via mobile

We had the top room in the lodge. It was very large and comfortable. The window looked out on a feeder and some trees and bushes. We spent our first hour looking out the window at the many birds coming and going. Breakfast was good but the same every day. Wonderful French onion soup and empanaditas. Lots of choices for dinner and decent wine. Lovely dining room overlooking feeders. Nice patio with more hummingbird feeders and another covered patio overlooking the valley and Mindo. They arranged for a private guide. Started at 5:15 AM and back at 6:30 PM for $75. Alex knew his birds. Highly recommend.

Lovely Ecuadorian-owned lodge. Stayed in modern, well-furnished "cabanas". Staff were friendly and did everything possible to accommodate guests. Food first-class. Birds around the lodge are abundant. Feeders attract tanagers, guans and numerous hummingbirds.

We spent 4 nights here as part of a birdwatching tour of the area. Superb birds from the terrace. Barbets, hummingbirds, toucans. The grounds too were good for birds but beware of the paths in the grounds. It is quite easy to go astray and end up out side the main grounds. At the time of writing the lodge didn't have a map available of the area.
The food was very good. The staff helpful. People who had rooms in the cabins located out side the main building had a little walk to the main building for meals.
Excellent base to travel to a variety of national parks.

We stayed 2 nights at the lodge, in two of the cabins.
Arrived a little after lunchtime but they served us a full meal of soup, trout, and dessert.
We immediately saw hummingbirds at the feeder and also a large toucan (?).
Also birds at dinner time on the terrace overlooking the mountains.

We opted to do the full meal plan and were glad we did. We were afraid about being tied to their schedule, but they were happy to pack us (large) lunches. One evening we wanted to eat in town and they said no problem, and packed us a lunch to take with us when we checked out because they "owed" it to us.

They also arranged taxis into town for us, and a long distance driver when we checked out to take us to Papallacta. All very good.

We stayed at Sachatamia the last week in July. We had cabana 7. It was a comfortable walk to the main lodge. In the evening when we went for dinner, we took flashlights which made the road easy to see.
We were photographing birds so every morning the staff brought our breakfast out to our location in front of the lodge. They were very pleasant and accomodating. You will need to take your shoes ff when entering your cabin or the lodge but this helps to keep the dirt and mud out of the buildings. The lodge provides things to put over your shoes.

We had breakfast and dinner there and went into Mindo for lunch. It is a good location for going to other paces during the day which are close by.

Room Tip: Take a flashlight for night walking

Well, it is not called the Cloud Forest for nothing - so we did see a little rain, which didn't faze the hummingbirds. It was bright in the morning and we were up at 6:00 watching from our windows and then went out to do a bit of birding around the lodge.
We were only staying one night - and we could have done with at least one more. We had a large room at the top of the house and the use of a lounge on the same floor, giving us 360 degrees of birds. The evening meal and breakfast were both good, We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it.

We stayed in cabin #12 which is quite a ways from the main lodge down a fairly steep gravel road. While we did not mind this, it is a bit of a walk to get to the restaurant and walking back to the cabin in the dark needs care. So you may want to ask for a cabin closer to the lodge. Some people staying in the rooms above the dining room said they were damp and cold. This is the cloud forest so it is damp most of the times. Our cabin had no heat and was a bit cold as well. The bathroom tiles looked quite grungy and were in need of a good scrubbing but the rest of the cabin was okay. The breakfast in the lodge was fruit, eggs, bread, and juice, coffee and was quite good. The dinners were all good and we were able to get a bottle of red wine for just $15. You can get coffee any time during the day. Wifi is available but only in the lodge. They gave me one password and I could not log on. When I mentioned this the second day, they suddenly came up with a different network and password, so if you have trouble logging on ask for an alternative link.
