I booked a full day tour of Mindo with Richard.

Richard was very informative and friendly. I asked a lot of questions and Richard was able to answer almost all of them. He also spoke about Ecuador's culture and politics, which I found interesting.

The tour itself was well rounded. We stopped at a beautiful lookout (Puluahua crater), hiked to a waterfall and learned about different plants, stopped at a butterfly farm, rode a cable car (that was a little scary for someone with a fear of heights...) and got to watch hummingbirds. I learned a lot and got some fantastic photos.

I also appreciated that Richard tries to support the community by working with locally owned businesses.

I would recommend tours run by Richard to friends.

Richard Hernadez was outstanding as a guide and naturalist. He was very informative, and accommodating as to what we most wanted to see.......birds, hiking the waterfall, hummingbirds, orchid farm......etc. It was a fun filled day......with a great appreciation for this beautiful landscape. We did this trip with Richard before a Galapagos cruise with Celebrity.

Richard Hernandez guided our group through the beauty and mystery of the Mindo Cloud Forest with great knowledge, patience and humor. He was able to uncover unique birdwatching opportunities with some of the best bird experts in all of Ecuado and provided us with daily opportunities to hike to our heart's content. We enjoyed his enthusiasm and love of his country and appreciated his careful shepherding of our little group. Richard is the very best of the many guides we have used in our travels.
We loved the hotel he arranged for us as well as the delightful and varied Ecuadorian meals. He was flexible in rearranging our schedule to fit the changing weather, and provided us with an excellent driver and tour bus. Our time in Mindo with Richard was the highlight of our Ecuadorian experience.

Richard Hernandez provided a two-day trip that was very well-rounded and extremely informative. And beautiful. The sequence of events is very well thought out and he is flexible to changing weather and changing clients (and vegetarians in our case). Costs are modest considering the range of what he does and his professional knowledge (many, many years as a national guide and many now in his eco-tourism specialty). His commitment to the Mindo community is strong: so what you pay him also filters on to the local community.

We took an overnight tour of the Mindo area with Richard. It was a terrific trip with hiking and photography opportunities, and learning about this part of Ecuador. On the first day, we went on a short hike in an Orchid Preserve, visited two different private places to see hummingbirds and butterflies, learned about how chocolate is made in a small factory, did a cable car ride in pouring rain and, at night, took a short trip in the forest to discover and see tiny frogs. On the second day, we left very early to see Cock-of-the-Rocks flying around just as sun came up on dense forest, and then went on a couple of short hikes. Richard is very knowledgable and friendly. Further, he has taken as his mission to help other locals benefit from tourism, instead of that money going to third parties (large tour companies). I like that and I am glad we did our little bit to encourage it. Highly recommended.
