Mindo Casa de Piedra

The cloud forest of Mindo is an essential stop on any Ecuador itinerary – as the plethora of places to stay in what is a very small town, bear testament.
Most are on the main street you reach after snaking down the access road off the main highway – but, look out for the abundant advertising posters dotted on the sides of buildings and a few minutes’ walk will take you to what the owners of Casa De Piedra claim is the only jungle lodge right in town.
It’s hard not to agree with them though, since the place’s verdant gardens are surrounded by abundant trees, with the wildlife almost coming to greet you where you sit.
We were given a warm, friendly greeting from owners, brother and sister Henry and Mariela Guillen and, despite turning up on spec, we had a room booked in the large Alpine-style main building, within minutes.
It offers small, bunk rooms for $15 per person per night – but despite being simple they are very comfortable. The building enjoys a lovely balcony, from which birdwatchers can spend a very fruitful time with a pair of binoculars.
The bathroom might not be en-suite, but it is impeccably clean and has a fine shower in place. There are also very inviting and comfortable communal areas to share with fellow guests when you want to relax.
And, you could be forgiven for wanting to stay awhile, especially when the surprisingly common (when we were there), hot sun shines down on a very fine swimming pool, situated behind reception, surrounded by abundant loungers to top up the tan.
But, Henry is just as keen to get you booked on the myriad activities on offer across town and beyond – river tubing, waterfall hiking, via the ever-so-slightly-alarming tarabita across the deep valley, hummingbird watching, etc – as he is to book you a table for dinner. So, don’t expect to relax for long!
You might initially need to ask for a few directions to get there, but Casa De Piedra really does reward your minor search – its beautiful surroundings really makes it feel much further from town.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that looks out onto the balcony over the main garden.

Casa De Piedra is a beautiful hostel set in an amazing environment! The beautiful garden with the swimming pool is so relaxing and feel like you are far from town, even though it's only a 2 min walk. Henry can help arrange any kind of tour from the hostel without you getting ripped off like the other tour companies in town does! Thanks for a lovely stay!

Located across the river from town, an easy walk across a foot bridge. Lovely pool and gardens; a nice refuge. Our hosts were gracious, and friendly. They were attentive and helpful. We felt right at home. Our room was small and clean, with a comfortable bed and shared bath. We hope to stay here again.

I stayed at casa de piedra for 5 nights this july. It was our favorite lodging in Ecuador for a number of reasons. First, The location is peaceful and natural. The lodge is a five minute walk from the center of town and The gardens are filled with tropical birds drawn by the flowers and rich vegetation. The chalet style rooms and comfy as are the spacious common areas. Another bonus is the pool backed by a beautiful mural. And the brother sister team that run the casa make you feel like you are at home.

My wife and I just stayed here for one night but the accommodation was excellent, the host and staff very conscious of the customer experience.

Henry was able to assist with recommended tours namely butterfly sanctuary and bird watching reserve of Las Tangaras.

A strong recommendation for this hotel

The people are really nice, friendly and helpfull. Its a quite place and lots of things to do, i really recommend this place. If you travel in Ecuador you can not miss this place and is easy to travel to from the coast or from Quitto.

Casa de Piedra helped make our stay in Mindo extremely relaxing and enjoyable. It is located very close to the center of town, therefore allowing guests to access everything quickly. The staff was courteous and answered all of our questions. Sara and Henry took excellent care of us during our two days, preparing a wonderful dinner and breakfast, and recommending different excursions in the area. We are looking forward to returning to Mindo in the future and will definitely stay with Sara and Henry again. A great way to relax in peace and from which to explore a beautiful region of Ecuador.

Room Tip: We stayed in the cabaña, but also saw the larger guest house.
