Rodney, the owner, clearly adores his birds. He has created a bird paradise in his backyard, where you can watch hummingbirds flit and float from a large, comfortable deck. On hand are a few pairs of binoculars to get those close-up views, and Rodney will let you know if there is anything rare around such as Toucans. He speaks great English and is also happy to offer some advice about restaurants and activities around town.

The rooms themselves are simple and clean. We had lots of hot water over multiple showers. The breakfast was decent, but took a little while to arrive (no problem given we waited on the deck beside the beautiful birds).

This place is amazing. They only have 4 rooms in this gorgeous wooden building with a lush bird jungle behind it. Wake up in the morning & curl up downstairs to watch the hummingbirds buzz around while your hosts make you a yummy breakfast of warm croissants, eggs, fresh fruit juice, fruit slices, cheese, steaming coffee....its delish! Upstairs you have hammocks to swing in while the afternoon rain falls. This place was heaven. Our friends were supposed to stay 3 nights and stayed 8. They convinced us to check it out & after switching we lingered in Mindo an extra 2 nights. Rodney is great. He loves birds and will always let you know if there are some tucans or other rare beauties about. Its worth the $20/pp. Little paradise I never wanted to leave

Great bird watching experience. The owner, Rodney speaks good English and lives onsite. He has been creating a bird friendly garden for at least 6 years and it really shows in the number and variety of hummingbird and other types of bird species that feed in the garden each day. We stayed two nights upstairs in the rear room. The room is small but cozy with everything you need, including a desk and shelves for clothing. There is a double bed with a nice loft that has a single bed. The bath had a shower with hot water. In fact the water could be too hot if not mixed with enough cold water. We found everything to be very clean and the room was made up daily by the same woman that makes the nice breakfast that are included with the room. The hammocks on the veranda were an added bonus. In general the place is very quiet with three possible exceptions: 1) the single wall wood construction is beautiful but provides little sound insulation, so if you have noisy persons in the next room it could be a problem. Just an observation was not a problem for our stay. 2) Loud music late at night coming from another Hostel in the neighborhood. We did experience a little of this on a Friday night. 3) Street dogs barking/howling at all hours of the night. Now this was a real problem both nights, even with ear plugs. We spoke to Rodney about this and while it is beyond his control he did say that he has already spoken to the local police about the increasing number of street dogs in Mindo that may pose a potential threat to tourism.
We enjoyed the location, just a 2 minute walk to the center of town and would recommend that especially bird lovers give it a try.

Room Tip: Upstairs in the rear for bird watching from your window.

Very relaxed and quiet place at the edge of Mindo's center, about 2 minutes walk from the center. If you look for a clean place that is surrounded by incredible nature and run by one of the nicest persons I met travelling so far this is the right place.
- The garden is the best spot in Mindo to see hummingbirds. There are 100s all day and even tucans and other big birds can be seen frequently. It's truly magic and hipnotizing. (People from other places come here and pay for this...)
- If you want to know anything about Mindo, just ask the owner. He is like the secret mayor of Mindo, a true gentleman and knows everything and everyone. (and even speaks some German)
- You just get the best value for your money here. Its simple but very clean and the staff is as friendly as one can be.

Room Tip: Only 3 rooms available, reservation necessary! There is also a dorm with shared bathroom beneath the...

On the positive side, there is a wonderful garden with great bird viewing options from the big veranda. You can even come just for breakfast on the deck. BUT DON'T STAY!! I tried one room upstairs and the room was ok but there was a leak in the bathroom sink and a puddle on the floor. So I changed rooms to one that stank. Overpowering soap/disinfectant smell masking......? No shower curtains when I arrived but some were later brought up but were too short so water splashed in the bathroom. But the worst was NO NOT WATER!! And by the time I noticed, staff had gone home for the night. I changed hotels the next day but talked to some people I'd met there who stayed for three or four days and never had hot water. To be fair, it says nothing about hot water on their website.

Room Tip: find another accommodation

We arrived at the BB very late at night and the owner was kind enough to show us the room and was very accommodating. The room is nothing special but the second floor has a set of hammocks which make up for the room. You can relax and enjoy all the backyard thats filled with hummingbirds and butterflies. In the morning we were served a good breakfast by his wife. We stayed two nights and can't complain. They also had a wonderful dog named Machitas who was a sweet heart. I wish I could Of taken her home with me.

We stayed in Descanso in december last year and even if it was "low season" in birds, there were lots of them in their beautiful garden. Rooms were basic and maybe because of the humid climate our room was a bit stinky. But we slept relatively well the both two nights we stayed, the bed was ok and even if the walls were very thin (as normal) it was pretty quiet. The owner was very friendly and gave some good tips for walks and places to eat. Only negative thing was, that we took an early bus back to Quito and we were promised to have some packed breakfast with us. However no-one was there when we left, so no breakfast that morning. I guess someone forgot or overslept, which is human. We would stay in El Descanso again, we think it was worth the money.
